Chapter 6 - MY MOTHER DIDN’T WANT REVENGEClaire faced charges connected to elder abuse, unlawful restraint, coercion, document fraud, and conspiracy-related conduct.

Mark faced financial and conspiracy investigations.
He was removed from Harper Manufacturing.
I expected Mom to want both destroyed.
She didn’t.
“I want them stopped.”
“That’s different?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
She looked at me.
“Revenge asks what will hurt them most.”
“And?”
“Justice asks what keeps them from hurting someone else.”
Mom had spent decades on nonprofit boards.
Apparently she had saved her best lectures for retirement.
“I’m still angry.”
“So am I.”
“You don’t sound like it.”
“I’m seventy-four.”
She smiled.
“I get tired.”
Then she became serious.
“I don’t want Claire near me.”
“She won’t be.”
“I don’t want Mark controlling company money.”
“He won’t.”
“I want my autonomy.”
That mattered most.
After being treated like an incompetent old woman, Mom did not want me taking over everything “for her protection.”
I had already started doing it.
Calling doctors.
Moving her belongings.
Scheduling appointments.
Deciding where she would stay.
She stopped me.
“Daniel.”
“What?”
“You’re doing it too.”
I froze.
“What?”
“Deciding.”
That hit.
“I’m trying to keep you safe.”
“I know.”
“So?”
“So ask me.”
I sat down.
“Where do you want to live?”
“My house.”
The old family home outside Atlanta had been closed while she recovered.
“Alone?”
“With daytime help.”
“Night?”
“Emergency monitor.”
I hated it.
But her doctor agreed she could manage with support.
Safety did not require erasing her independence.

That was another lesson Claire’s cruelty forced me to learn.
Protecting someone is not owning them.
