Chapter 7 - MARK BLAMED EVERYONE EXCEPT HIMSELFMark’s first interview with investigators was almost impressive.
According to him:
Claire misunderstood.
Mom was confused.
Henry overreacted.
Emma was manipulated.
I was emotional.
Everyone had a flaw except Mark.
Then messages contradicted him.
So did financial records.
The competing trust amendment had been prepared through an attorney Mark retained.
The attorney eventually cooperated.
He said Mark told him Margaret wanted “succession simplification.”
He never met Margaret.
Never confirmed.
Terrible legal work.
But Mark supplied forged authorization.
Then investigators found an even larger plan.
If the amendment succeeded, Mark would receive temporary voting authority.
Once there, he intended to push through a private sale of two Harper subsidiaries.
Buyer?
A private-equity group in which Mark secretly held an economic interest.
He would profit twice.
From control.
And sale.
Claire was promised a $6 million “family settlement” after completion.
That was her security.
Six million dollars.
My mother had been locked in a cage for a number on a spreadsheet.
I sat staring at the documents.
Emma said:
“Grandpa would be furious.”
Mom answered:
“Your grandfather was furious before he died. That’s why the trust exists.”
Fair.
Eventually Mark entered a negotiated plea involving fraud-related conduct and conspiracy charges.
He lost his position permanently.
His personal finances suffered.
His reputation inside the industry collapsed.
But the company survived.
That mattered.
Thousands of employees had nothing to do with our family disaster.
I refused to turn Harper Manufacturing into a revenge machine.
We installed stronger professional governance.
Independent audits.
No family member could unilaterally alter succession documents.
Emma kept her beneficiary role.
I retained mine.
Mom stepped back voluntarily.
Not because anyone forced her.
Because she was tired of board meetings.
“I’m seventy-four.”
“You mentioned that.”
“I intend to use it.”
