Chapter 9 - CLAIRE FINALLY WROTE THE TRUTHThe divorce became final eighteen months later.

Claire did not receive Harper trust assets.
She did receive what our marital agreement legally entitled her to.
I did not fight reasonable property rights out of anger.
My attorneys were surprised.
“You could make this harder.”
“Why?”
“Because of what she did.”
“That’s what criminal court is for.”
I did not want to become a person who confused revenge with fairness.
Maybe Mom influenced me.
Probably.
Two years later, Claire sent Mom a letter.
Mom asked me to read it first.
Claire wrote:
I told myself you hated me because I wasn’t born into your family. The truth is that I hated how little control I had over what I thought marriage should give me.
Then:
Mark did not make me humiliate you. He encouraged me, but I chose it.
Mom nodded when I read that.
Finally.
No blame-shifting.
Then:
I poured water over you because I wanted to see you afraid of me. That is difficult to admit, but anything less would be another lie.
I stopped.
Mom looked out the window.
“Keep going.”
Claire ended:
You do not owe me forgiveness.
When I finished, Mom sat quietly.
“What do you think?”
She shrugged.
“She finally understands part of it.”
“Do you forgive her?”
“No.”
Simple.
“Maybe someday?”
“Maybe.”
Then:
“But forgiveness is not parole.”
I smiled.
Meaning even if she forgave Claire internally, access would not automatically return.

Boundaries remained.
That was healthy.
