Chapter 2: The Man at My Door

Daniel stood in the foyer wearing a dark raincoat, his hair dripping onto the hardwood floor.

He had arrived without calling, something he rarely did unless the situation was urgent.

Behind him, Vanessa stood with her arms folded, her expression carefully arranged into one of wounded innocence.

“Thank God you're here,” she told him.

“Marcus is having some kind of breakdown.””

Daniel looked past her toward the staircase.

“Where's Maya?””

“Upstairs,” I answered as I descended.

“She's safe.””

His shoulders relaxed for half a second.

Then he noticed my face.

“What happened?””

I held up the pink recorder.

Daniel went pale.

Not confused.

Not surprised.

Pale.

The kind of reaction that came when someone saw a ghost they had spent years trying to bury.

Vanessa noticed it too.

“Daniel,” she said sharply, “tell your brother what you told me.””

He didn't answer.

I stepped off the final stair.

“What did you tell her?””

Daniel looked at the recorder.

“Where did you get that?””

“From Maya's backpack.””

He rubbed his face with both hands.

“Marcus, listen to me. You need to calm down before you make a decision you can't take back.””

I gave a short, humorless laugh.

“That's interesting. Vanessa said almost exactly the same thing.””

He glanced at her.

Something passed between them.

It was quick, but I saw it.

“Get out,” I told Vanessa.

She stared at me.

“Excuse me?””

“You heard me. I want you out of this house tonight.””

“This house belongs to me too.””

“Then go to your sister's. Go to a hotel. Go anywhere you like. But you're not sleeping under the same roof as Maya tonight.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You're choosing a child over your wife?””

“No,” I said.

“I'm choosing my child over the person who hurt her.””

For a moment, her face crumpled.

It looked almost like genuine pain.

Then she leaned toward me and whispered, “You have no idea what she is capable of.””

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa straightened.

“Ask your brother.””

Daniel swore under his breath.

“Vanessa, stop.””

Her mouth tightened.

“You promised me you would tell him if this happened.””

“Tell me what?”” I demanded.

Neither of them spoke.

Upstairs, a floorboard creaked.

I looked toward the staircase.

Maya was standing at the top, wrapped in my oversized gray sweatshirt. Her face was pale, and she held the railing with both hands.

Daniel took one step toward her.

“Hey, sweetheart.””

Maya immediately moved backward.

It was a tiny movement.

Barely an inch.

But it told me everything I needed to know about how safe she felt around him.

I positioned myself between them.

“Don't approach her.””

Daniel stopped.

“Marcus, I need to explain something.””

“Then explain it from there.””

He looked toward the front door.

“Can we speak privately?””

“No.””

His jaw tightened.

“Fine. But you need to know that Vanessa didn't start this.””

Vanessa let out a sharp laugh.

“Don't you dare put this on me.””

“You knew what you were getting into,” Daniel snapped.

“And you knew exactly what you wanted me to do!””

The words hit the room like a gunshot.

I looked from one to the other.

“What did you want her to do?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

Vanessa's hands began to shake.

For the first time that night, she looked genuinely afraid.

Not of me.

Of him.

“Marcus,” Daniel said slowly, “do you remember the week before your wedding?””

“Of course.””

“You were in Chicago for that conference. I was supposed to pick up Maya from your mother's house and bring her to the rehearsal dinner.””

I remembered.

I'd been furious when Daniel called to say he'd been delayed. Vanessa had collected Maya instead, and when I returned that evening, everyone had assured me the problem was resolved.

“What about it?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“She called me that afternoon. She said Maya had been acting out. She said the wedding would be easier if Maya stayed with your mother for a few days.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“That isn't how it happened.””

Daniel continued.

“She asked me to convince you to postpone bringing Maya home.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

“Because she said she wasn't ready to raise another woman's child.””

I turned toward Vanessa.

She stared at the floor.

I remembered our engagement.

Vanessa had cried when I told her I wouldn't move forward with the wedding unless she accepted that Maya would always come first. She had held my hands and promised she understood.

“You told me you loved her,” I said.

“I did.””

“Then why?””

“Because I was scared!”” Vanessa shouted.

Her voice cracked against the walls.

“I was scared that there would never be room for me. You had a daughter, a dead wife whose picture was everywhere, and a family that treated me like an intruder. Every decision revolved around Maya.””

“She was three years old.””

“And you never let me forget it!””

I stared at her.

“I asked you to love her.””

“You asked me to become someone I wasn't.””

The admission silenced the room.

Daniel shifted his weight.

“That's not all,” he said.

Vanessa spun toward him.

“Don't.””

He ignored her.

“The night before the wedding, Maya disappeared for twenty minutes.””

I remembered that too.

Vanessa had told me Maya had wandered into the garden looking for fireflies. When I found her, she was sitting on the back steps with a stuffed rabbit clutched to her chest.

I'd asked whether anything was wrong.

She had said no.

I had believed her.

“What happened during those twenty minutes?”” I asked.

Daniel swallowed.

“I found her crying in the pantry.””

My pulse roared in my ears.

“Why was she in the pantry?””

“Vanessa had told her that if she couldn't behave during the wedding, you'd send her away to live with your mother.””

Maya made a small sound from the stairs.

I turned.

She was crying silently.

I crossed the room and climbed the steps, but she shook her head before I could reach her.

“It's okay, Daddy,” she whispered.

“I know you didn't know.””

I crouched in front of her.

“Sweetheart, what happened before the wedding?””

She twisted the sleeve of my sweatshirt between her fingers.

“Vanessa said I was going to ruin everything.””

My throat closed.

“She said you wanted a new family. She said I had to be good or you wouldn't want me anymore.””

I pulled her into my arms.

“Never. Do you hear me? Never.””

Maya buried her face against my shoulder.

Behind us, Daniel spoke quietly.

“Marcus, there's another reason I came tonight.””

I turned.

He was holding an envelope.

It was old, yellowed at the edges, and sealed with a strip of transparent tape.

“I found this in Dad's safe when we were settling his estate,” he said.

“It was addressed to you, but Vanessa asked me not to give it to you.””

Vanessa lunged toward him.

“Daniel, don't you dare!””

He stepped back.

“I'm done protecting you.””

I took the envelope.

My father's handwriting crossed the front.

Marcus—Open this only if something happens to me.

My hands went numb.

My father had died two years earlier.

I turned the envelope over.

The tape had been cut and replaced. Someone had opened it before.

“Who read this?”” I asked.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“She did.””

Vanessa's face crumpled.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“From what?””

She backed away.

For the first time, she had no answer.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a folded letter and a photograph of my father standing beside a woman I recognized immediately.

Maya's mother, Elena.

But Elena wasn't smiling at the camera.

She was holding a newborn baby.

And on the back of the photograph, my father's handwriting said:

*The truth about Elena's last night must never be hidden from Marcus.*

I looked up.

Vanessa was already reaching for the front door.

“Stop,” I said.

She froze.

Then she turned toward me with tears streaming down her face.

“You don't understand,” she whispered.

“If you read that letter, you'll lose everything.””

I looked down at the photograph.

A newborn baby.

Elena.

My father.

And a date written beneath the image that was impossible.

The photograph had been taken three months before Elena died.

But according to every document I had ever seen, Maya had been her only child.

So whose baby was Elena holding?

And why had my father hidden the answer from me?
