Chapter 7: The Father Who Was Never Mine
For several seconds, I couldn't move.
The recorder sat in my palm, its tiny red light blinking as though it had just delivered an ordinary message instead of destroying everything I understood about my life.
Richard Bennett was my biological father.
The man who had tried to take Maya away from me.
The man whose name appeared on Lily's adoption papers.
The man Elena had feared before she died.
I replayed the message.
Richard Bennett is your biological father.
The words came again, clear and merciless.
Behind me, a chair scraped across the floor.
“Marcus?”” Lily whispered.
I turned toward her.
She was staring at the recorder.
“What did Elena say?””
I wanted to answer. I wanted to tell her that her mother had left us both a truth neither of us had been prepared to hear.
But my throat had closed.
Maya appeared at the staircase, clutching her stuffed rabbit.
“Daddy? Why are you crying?””
I hadn't realized I was.
I crossed the room and knelt in front of her.
“I'm okay, sweetheart.””
She touched my cheek with a tiny hand.
“You don't look okay.””
I pulled her into my arms.
For a moment, I let myself be nine years old too, frightened and confused, desperately wishing an adult would tell me that everything would make sense in the morning.
But I was the adult now.
And my daughter needed me.
“I have some things to figure out,” I whispered.
“None of them are your fault.””
Maya nodded against my shoulder.
Then she asked the question I had been dreading.
“Is Uncle Daniel still our family?””
I closed my eyes.
“Yes,” I said carefully.
“But that doesn't mean he gets to keep secrets from us.””
When Maya went upstairs with Lily, I called Daniel.
He answered immediately.
“Marcus?””
“Did you know?””
“Know what?””
“That Richard Bennett is my biological father.””
Silence.
It lasted only three seconds.
But three seconds was enough.
“Daniel,” I said, my voice shaking, “answer me.””
He exhaled.
“Yes.””
I gripped the edge of the kitchen island.
“How long?””
“Since Dad died.””
“You found the birth certificates. You found the bank statements. You read the letter.””
“I didn't know about the recording.””
“But you knew Richard was my father.””
“Yes.””
The word was barely audible.
I stared at the dark window above the sink.
Outside, the rain had finally stopped. Water dripped from the gutters in slow, uneven taps.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because Dad made me promise.””
“Dad is dead!””
“I know that!””
Daniel's voice cracked.
“I know he's dead, Marcus. I know I should have told you. But Dad said the truth would put you and Maya in danger, and I believed him.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Apparently, keeping secrets has done a wonderful job of protecting us.””
“Marcus, please—”
“Did you know Richard was trying to take Maya?””
“No.””
“Did you know Vanessa was locking her in a shed?””
“No!””
“Then tell me what you actually knew.””
Daniel went quiet.
When he spoke again, his voice was lower.
“I knew Dad had an affair with Richard Bennett's wife years before you were born. I knew Richard suspected you might be his son. And I knew Elena discovered the truth shortly before she died.””
I sat down.
My father had raised me.
He had taught me to ride a bicycle, helped me through college, and sat beside my hospital bed when Maya was born prematurely. He had been the person I called when my marriage to Elena was struggling.
He had been the man I tried to become.
Now I was being told that the man whose blood ran through my veins was someone else entirely.
“Was Dad my father in every way that mattered?”” I asked.
Daniel's answer came immediately.
“Yes.””
I swallowed.
“Then why did he lie?””
“Because he loved you.””
“That doesn't explain anything.””
“He was afraid Richard would claim you. Richard had money, influence, and a family that would have treated you like a bargaining chip. Dad thought he could give you a normal life if he kept the truth buried.””
I looked at the recorder.
“And Elena?””
Daniel sighed.
“She found out through an old letter. She confronted Dad, and he told her everything. That's why they started investigating Richard together.””
“Investigating what?””
“Money. Adoption payments. Forged documents.
Dad believed Richard had arranged Lily's adoption through an illegal private agency. When Elena found out, she wanted to expose him.””
I remembered the letter.
Elena had feared losing Maya.
Not her money.
Her daughter.
“Why did she die, Daniel?””
He didn't answer.
“Was it an accident?””
“I don't know.””
“Do you believe it was?””
Another silence.
Then he whispered, “No.””
My chest tightened.
“Why?””
“Because Dad received a phone call the night she died. I heard him arguing with someone in his study. He kept saying, ‘You promised nobody would get hurt.’ The next morning, Elena was dead.””
I closed my eyes.
“Why didn't you tell the police?””
“Because I was seventeen, Marcus. Dad told me it was business. He said I hadn't heard what I thought I'd heard.””
I pressed my fingers against my forehead.
Every answer opened another wound.
I ended the call and sat alone in the kitchen until my phone vibrated.
A message had arrived from an unknown number.
There was no greeting.
Only a photograph.
It showed Vanessa sitting in the passenger seat of a black SUV.
Richard Bennett was behind the wheel.
Beneath the image was a single sentence.
*Your wife has been working for your father longer than you think.*
I stared at the screen.
Then another message appeared.
*Ask her what she was paid to do before she married you.*
I immediately called my attorney and forwarded the messages. Then I called the police officer handling the fraudulent custody order.
I wasn't going to confront Vanessa alone, and I wasn't going to let an anonymous message become evidence without verification.
But I needed to know what she had done.
I found her at a hotel across town.
She had checked in under her maiden name and was sitting in the lobby beside a suitcase when I arrived. My attorney had arranged for a neutral witness to accompany me, and I kept the meeting in the public seating area.
Vanessa looked up.
Her face changed when she saw me.
“Marcus.””
I sat across from her.
“Were you working for Richard Bennett?””
She went completely still.
“Who told you that?””
“So it's true.””
She looked toward the reception desk.
“I can explain.””
“Then explain.””
Vanessa clasped her hands.
“Richard contacted me six months before our wedding. He knew I was dating you. He offered me money to find out whether Elena had left any documents behind.””
“How much?””
“Fifty thousand dollars.””
I stared at her.
“And you accepted?””
“I was in debt. My business had failed. I thought I was simply looking for old financial papers.””
“You searched my home.””
“No. I asked questions. I looked through the files you kept in your study.””
“And when you found something?””
She lowered her eyes.
“I gave it to him.””
“What?””
“A letter from Elena. It mentioned Lily and a private adoption agency.””
My hands curled into fists beneath the table.
“Did you know Richard was my biological father?””
“No. I swear I didn't know that until recently.””
“Did you know about the forged custody documents?””
She shook her head.
“I knew Richard wanted Maya's guardianship papers. He said there was a legal dispute over an inheritance.””
“And you helped him?””
“I thought he wanted to protect the family.””
I stared at her.
“You locked my daughter outside because she asked when I was coming home.””
Tears rolled down Vanessa's cheeks.
“I know.””
“You removed her mother's picture.””
“I know.””
“You told her she wasn't part of this family.””
She covered her mouth.
I stood.
“You don't get to tell me you know. You don't get to cry and expect me to forget what you did.””
Vanessa looked up at me.
“I didn't know Richard would try to take her.””
“Maybe not. But you knew exactly what you were doing to her.””
I turned to leave.
Then Vanessa spoke.
“Marcus, wait.””
I stopped without turning around.
“Richard has a file,” she whispered.
“A file about Elena's death. He told me it was insurance in case you ever found out the truth.””
I faced her.
“Where is it?””
“I don't know. But he showed me one page.””
“What page?””
Vanessa reached into her purse and pulled out a folded sheet.
“I kept a photograph of it because I was afraid he'd turn against me.””
I took the paper.
It showed a police report from the night Elena died.
At the bottom was a handwritten note.
*Vehicle inspection omitted at request of R. Bennett.*
Below that was a signature.
My father's.
I stared at it until the words blurred.
Then I noticed a second signature beneath it.
Daniel's.
May you like
And beside his name, someone had written:
*Witness to removal of evidence.*
