Chapter 6: The Custody Order

By the time I reached home, two police cruisers were parked outside my house.

The front gate stood open.

My stomach dropped.

I ran up the driveway, Lily close behind me, and found a man in a gray suit standing beneath the porch light. He held a leather folder and wore the expression of someone who had practiced looking sympathetic in a mirror.

The family friend who had been watching Maya stood beside the doorway.

Maya was nowhere in sight.

“Where's my daughter?”” I demanded.

The suited man stepped forward.

“Mr. Hale? My name is Peter Lawson. I'm here on behalf of the county family court.””

I barely heard him.

“Where is Maya?””

“She is inside, safe and well.””

I pushed past him.

Maya was sitting on the living room couch with a blanket around her shoulders. When she saw me, she leaped to her feet and ran into my arms.

“Daddy!””

I caught her and held her tightly.

“I'm here, sweetheart.””

She pressed her face against my chest.

“They said I had to go with them.””

“Who said that?””

“The man with the papers.””

I looked over her head.

Peter Lawson had followed me into the room.

“Mr. Hale, I understand this is upsetting, but I have an emergency order authorizing temporary removal of the child from your custody pending an investigation.””

I held Maya closer.

“An investigation into what?””

He opened his folder.

“Allegations of neglect, emotional instability, and an unsafe domestic environment.””

I stared at him.

“Neglect?””

“Yes.””

“My daughter was locked in a shed by my wife. I reported it to the police last night.””

Lawson's expression didn't change.

“I'm aware of the incident.””

“Then you know who was responsible.””

“The allegations before the court concern the household as a whole.””

I felt Maya's fingers tighten in my shirt.

“What does that mean?””

“It means the court has reason to believe the child's current living situation is unstable.””

Lily stepped forward.

“Who filed the petition?””

Lawson glanced at her.

“And you are?””

“Lily Bennett.””

The name had an immediate effect.

His eyes narrowed.

“Are you related to the child?””

“Yes.””

“By what authority?””

“I'm her sister.””

Lawson closed the folder.

“I'm afraid that is not relevant to the order.””

“Then tell us whose authority is relevant,” I snapped.

He hesitated.

I noticed.

He looked down at the papers again, then turned one page.

“The petition was filed by Richard Bennett.””

For a moment, the room seemed to stop moving.

Richard Bennett wanted Maya removed from my custody.

The same man named in Elena's letter.

The same man who had fathered Lily.

The same man who might have been involved in falsifying documents years earlier.

I glanced at the order.

“Where is the judge's signature?””

Lawson pointed to the bottom of the page.

I leaned closer.

The signature was there, but something about it looked wrong. The final stroke was too long, and the date had been written in a different ink.

I pulled out my phone and photographed every page.

“My attorney will verify this order,” I said.

Lawson's mouth tightened.

“You are required to comply.””

“Then you'll have no objection to waiting while the police verify it.””

He glanced toward the officers outside.

“I don't think that's necessary.””

“Funny. I do.””

I called my attorney and put him on speaker.

When he answered, I explained that someone claiming to represent the court had arrived with an emergency custody order filed by Richard Bennett.

My attorney asked me to read the case number.

I did.

There was a pause.

Then he said, “Marcus, do not surrender Maya until the issuing court and the order have been independently verified. I am checking the docket now.””

Lawson shifted his weight.

“Mr. Hale, delaying this process could have consequences.””

My attorney's voice sharpened through the speaker.

“Who am I speaking to?””

“Peter Lawson, legal representative for the petitioner.””

“Please provide your bar number and the name of the court that issued this order.””

Lawson gave the information.

My attorney repeated it.

Then came silence.

“Mr. Lawson,” he said finally, “that case number belongs to a sealed probate matter. It is not a custody case.””

Lawson's face changed.

My attorney continued.

“The judge whose signature appears on the document retired four years ago.””

I felt Maya pull back from my chest.

She looked up at me.

“Daddy, am I going away?””

“No,” I whispered.

“Not tonight.””

Lawson closed his folder.

“This is a misunderstanding.””

One of the officers stepped into the room.

“Sir, I need you to remain here while we verify your identity and credentials.””

Lawson tried to leave.

The officer blocked the doorway.

“Sir, please stay where you are.””

For the first time, the man in the gray suit looked frightened.

He placed the folder on the table.

“I was given these documents by a client. I believed they were legitimate.””

“Who gave them to you?”” I asked.

He pressed his lips together.

“Richard Bennett's office.””

Lily went pale.

I looked at the officers.

“I want that statement included in the report.””

The officer nodded.

Lawson was escorted outside while the police continued their inquiries. My attorney told me to preserve the original documents and avoid discussing the case publicly until the evidence had been examined.

I agreed.

But when the officers finished taking statements, one of them pulled me aside.

“Mr. Hale, there's something you should know.””

I followed him onto the porch.

He lowered his voice.

“The documents weren't simply dropped off. Someone called the courthouse yesterday and claimed your daughter was in immediate danger. They used your wife's name.””

“Vanessa?””

He nodded.

“Someone also provided photographs of the shed and your daughter's bedroom.””

My stomach tightened.

“Those photographs could only have been taken by someone who had access to my house.””

“That's what we're trying to establish.””

I looked through the window.

Maya sat beside Lily on the couch. Lily was showing her a picture of a little girl holding a stuffed rabbit.

Maya stared at it with wide eyes.

“That's Mommy,” she whispered.

Lily nodded.

“She was about your age when she had her first baby.””

Maya looked at her.

“Are you my sister?””

Lily's eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

Maya was silent for several seconds.

Then she asked, “Did Mommy know about me?””

Lily shook her head gently.

“Of course she did, sweetheart. She loved you more than anything.””

Maya's face crumpled.

“Then why didn't she tell me about you?””

Lily reached for her hand.

“Because grown-ups sometimes make mistakes they spend the rest of their lives trying to fix.””

I turned away.

I couldn't bear to watch my daughter discover another piece of the past that had been hidden from her.

My phone rang.

My attorney.

“Marcus, I've checked the docket. There is no emergency custody order. The document is fraudulent.””

“I know.””

“There is another issue. The petition includes an affidavit supposedly signed by Vanessa. It claims you have been emotionally abusive toward Maya and that your business trips leave her unsupervised for days.””

I closed my eyes.

Vanessa hadn't merely punished Maya.

She had helped construct a story in which I was the dangerous parent.

“Can you prove the affidavit is false?””

“We'll need Vanessa's statement and the original document. But there's something else. The petition was prepared using information from a sealed family court file dating back nine years.””

Nine years.

Before Maya was born.

Before Elena died.

Before I married Vanessa.

“What was in that file?””

My attorney hesitated.

“An application for confidential adoption involving a child named Lily Bennett.””

I stared into the rain.

“So Richard has access to the original adoption records.””

“Someone does. And they used them to build this petition.””

I ended the call and went back inside.

Lily was standing near the window, watching the street.

“Someone has been following me,” she said.

I moved beside her.

“What makes you think that?””

“Because the same black SUV has been outside my apartment for a week.””

I looked through the curtains.

At the far end of the street, a black SUV sat beneath a tree with its headlights off.

My skin prickled.

“Is that it?””

Lily nodded.

The vehicle's engine started.

Then its headlights flashed once.

The SUV pulled away.

I grabbed my keys.

Lily caught my wrist.

“Don't follow it.””

“Why?””

“Because that's what he wants.””

I turned toward her.

“Who?””

She swallowed.

“The man who arranged my adoption.””

I looked at Maya, who was still holding the photograph of Elena.

Then I looked at the forged custody order lying on the table.

Someone had spent years burying the truth about Elena's first child.

Someone had threatened Lily.

Someone had tried to take Maya away from me using a fraudulent court document.

And now I understood that the person behind it all wasn't simply trying to protect a family secret.

He was trying to control what happened next.

I locked the doors and called the police again to report the SUV.

Then I took the recorder from my pocket.

There were still several recordings I hadn't heard.

I pressed play.

At first, there was only static.

Then my father's voice emerged, weak and strained, as though he'd recorded the message in a hurry.

“Marcus, if you've found this, it means Richard has started again.””

My heart stopped.

My father continued.

“There's something I should have told you before Elena died. The man you believe is your daughter's biological father may not be her father at all.””

I stared at the recorder.

Maya's father.

My father.

Richard Bennett.

The adoption papers.

Every piece of the story seemed to shift at once.

Then my father's voice dropped to a whisper.

“And if Vanessa is still in your house, do not let her near Maya. She knows who signed the original guardianship agreement.””

The recording ended with a sharp click.

I slowly lowered the device.

Across the room, Lily was staring at me.

“What did he say?””

I looked at the front door.

Then at the staircase leading to Maya's bedroom.

My father had known the truth.

Vanessa had known enough to hide it.

And Richard Bennett had just tried to take my daughter away.

I pressed the recorder's play button again, desperate to hear the final seconds.

This time, beneath the static, I heard another voice.

A woman's voice.

Elena's.

And she was saying my name.

“Marcus, if you ever hear this, remember that the man who raised you isn't the man who gave you life.””

I stopped breathing.

May you like

Then came the final sentence.

*“Richard Bennett is your biological father.””*
