Chapter 13: The Man Buried Beneath My Father's Name
I read the identification photograph three times.
Daniel Voss.
The man who had spent years stealing from my family.
The man who had manipulated my wife, deceived my sister, and apparently arranged my father's disappearance.
According to the photograph, he had been buried twelve years earlier.
But Daniel had been standing in my company's lobby that morning.
I looked at Margaret.
“Tell me this is a mistake.””
She placed the photograph beside the hospital records.
“I wish I could.””
Catherine slowly approached the table.
“That's impossible. I saw Daniel at Richard's funeral.””
Margaret examined the identification number.
“Then either the burial records were falsified, or someone deliberately used Daniel's identity.””
Rebecca looked at the photograph.
“Could it have been Robert?””
“No,” Margaret answered.
“The dental records match Daniel Voss.””
I felt the room closing around me.
“Then who have we been dealing with?””
Catherine looked at me.
“Someone using Daniel's identity.””
My phone rang again.
The same private number.
I answered immediately.
“Dad?””
“Ethan, are you still at the hospital?””
“Yes.””
“Leave. Now.””
“Who is Daniel Voss?””
There was a long silence.
Then my father answered.
“Daniel Voss died twelve years ago.””
I looked at Margaret.
She was already signaling for the others to prepare to leave.
“Then who's been pretending to be him?””
“My brother.””
I stopped breathing.
“Robert?””
“Yes.””
Catherine covered her mouth.
My father continued.
“Robert never died. He arranged Daniel's death, stole his identity, and used it to enter our family business.””
I gripped the phone.
“Why?””
“Because Robert wanted everything your grandfather had promised me.””
“Why didn't you tell the police?””
“I tried. But Robert had already built a network of people who would protect him.””
“Dad, where are you?””
“Ethan, I can't explain everything over the phone.””
“I'm not hanging up until you tell me where you are.””
He sighed.
“I'm at the old Sterling factory. The original building. Your grandfather's office is still there.””
I looked at Margaret.
She nodded.
“We're coming.””
My father spoke again.
“Don't bring anyone you don't trust.””
The call ended.
We left the hospital immediately.
Margaret contacted the federal investigators and gave them the location. She also sent copies of the hospital records and the identification photograph.
Catherine insisted on coming.
Rebecca refused to leave her.
I didn't argue.
The original Sterling factory stood forty miles outside Chicago.
It was the place where my grandfather had started the family business with two trucks and a rented warehouse.
My father had spent most of his childhood there.
So had I.
When we arrived, the main gate was chained shut.
But a side entrance stood open.
A single light glowed inside the administration building.
I walked through the corridor.
“Dad?””
A chair moved somewhere in the darkness.
Then a man stepped into the light.
I stopped.
He was thinner than I remembered.
His hair had turned almost completely gray.
There were deep lines around his eyes, and he leaned heavily on a wooden cane.
But I knew him.
My father.
Richard Sterling.
For twenty years, I had believed he was dead.
Now he was standing ten feet away.
“Hello, son.””
I couldn't move.
He took a step forward.
“Ethan.””
I crossed the room and grabbed him.
He held me tightly.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then I pulled away.
“Where have you been?””
My father looked toward Catherine.
She stood motionless.
“Richard?””
He nodded.
Catherine approached him slowly.
“You let me believe you were dead.””
Richard's eyes filled.
“I thought it was the only way to keep you alive.””
She slapped him.
The sound echoed through the empty factory.
“You let our son grow up without his parents.””
Richard lowered his head.
“I know.””
“You let me believe I had lost you.””
“I know.””
Catherine began crying.
Richard reached for her hand.
She didn't take it.
I stepped between them.
“Start talking.””
My father sat down.
He explained that Robert had returned to the family after years of resentment.
He had discovered that Richard was managing the company but did not personally own the controlling shares.
Robert believed he had been cheated out of his inheritance.
He began working with Daniel Voss, who was already involved in questionable financial transactions.
Together, they planned to take control of the company.
Then Daniel died unexpectedly.
Robert saw an opportunity.
He assumed Daniel's identity and began operating through the existing business network.
He used the name, the accounts, and the relationships Daniel had established.
“He was the man at your wedding?”” I asked.
Richard nodded.
“He introduced himself as Daniel. You never knew the real man.””
I felt sick.
“And Tiana?””
“Robert recruited her. He knew she could get close to you.””
I looked at my father.
“You knew she was being sent into my life?””
“Yes.””
“And you let me marry her?””
“I tried to stop it.””
“That's not an answer.””
Richard looked down.
“I sent warnings. I contacted your grandmother. I asked Margaret to investigate. But Robert intercepted everything.””
I shook my head.
“You could have called me.””
“I did.””
“When?””
“Several times.””
I stared at him.
“Why didn't I hear you?””
“Because Robert controlled the communication channels. He had access to your business accounts, your personal records, and even your wife's devices.””
Catherine sat beside him.
“Then how did you survive?””
Richard removed a small photograph from his jacket.
It showed a man in a hospital bed.
His face was bruised, but the resemblance was unmistakable.
“After Robert arranged the false medication order, I realized I was in immediate danger. Eleanor helped me disappear. She believed the only way to protect you was to let everyone think I had died.””
“And the body?””
Richard closed his eyes.
“Robert had already arranged for Daniel's remains to be identified as mine. He used the confusion to establish his own legal death under Daniel's identity.””
I stared at him.
“So Robert became Daniel Voss.””
“Yes.””
“And the man buried in Daniel's grave was actually Daniel?””
“Yes.””
The entire scheme was beginning to make sense.
Robert had stolen a dead man's identity, then used it to steal a living family's inheritance.
But something still bothered me.
“Why call me now?””
Richard looked toward the factory office.
“Because Robert has discovered the original ownership agreement.””
He opened a metal cabinet.
Inside was a thick folder containing the original corporate documents.
“The company belongs to your mother and her children. Robert has no legal claim.””
“Then why hasn't he taken it already?””
“Because he needs both beneficiaries to sign away their interests.””
I looked at Rebecca.
She nodded slowly.
“He had me sign something.””
Richard looked at her.
“I know.””
“Dad, I'm sorry.””
He shook his head.
“You were deceived. But we still need to correct what happened.””
Then he handed me a final document.
It was a declaration of beneficial ownership.
My father's signature was at the bottom.
So was my mother's.
Rebecca's name appeared beside mine.
But there was another signature.
One I recognized immediately.
Tiana's.
I looked up.
“Why is my wife signing this?””
Richard's expression hardened.
“Because Robert made her an offer.””
“What offer?””
He pointed to the final paragraph.
If Tiana could convince both beneficiaries to relinquish their interests, she would receive a substantial financial settlement.
I stared at the figure.
Twenty million dollars.
My father shook his head.
“She wasn't just helping Robert steal your house, Ethan.””
He leaned closer.
“She was supposed to deliver the entire Sterling family fortune.””
Suddenly, a vehicle engine sounded outside.
Headlights swept across the windows.
Richard stood.
His face changed.
“Robert.””
I looked toward the entrance.
A man's voice echoed through the factory.
“Richard! I know you're in there.””
My father grabbed my arm.
“Get your mother and sister out through the rear exit.””
“What about you?””
Richard looked toward the doorway.
“I've spent twenty years running from my brother.””
He picked up his cane.
“I'm finished running.””
May you like
Then the front door opened.
And the man wearing Daniel Voss's face stepped into the light.
