Chapter 7: The Wife Who Knew Too Much

Margaret grabbed my arm before I reached the elevator.

“Ethan, you're not going anywhere alone.””

I looked down at her hand.

“Tiana says she has something my father left behind.””

“And you believe her?””

“No. But I believe she knows something.””

Margaret released me reluctantly.

“Then we're going together.””

We arrived at Sterling Industrial Solutions twenty minutes later.

The lobby was packed.

Employees stood near the reception desk, reporters crowded around the entrance, and two security guards were struggling to keep people from blocking the elevators.

A large screen behind the reception desk displayed a photograph of Daniel Voss shaking hands with Tiana.

The headline beneath it read:

*TIANA STERLING ANNOUNCES NEW OWNERSHIP ARRANGEMENT WITH NORTHBRIDGE ADVISORY.*

I stopped walking.

“She actually went through with it.””

Margaret looked at the screen.

“She's trying to establish a public claim before the legal documents are challenged.””

A reporter recognized me.

“Mr. Sterling! Is it true your wife has taken control of your company?””

Another shouted, “Did you divert company funds into private accounts?””

I kept walking.

Then I saw Tiana.

She stood near the elevators wearing a black tailored suit. Her hair was perfectly arranged, and her expression was calm.

Daniel stood beside her.

He looked at me and smiled.

“Ethan. I was beginning to think you wouldn't come.””

I ignored him.

“You said you had something belonging to my father.””

Tiana glanced at Margaret.

“This conversation is between my husband and me.””

“Ex-husband,” I corrected.

She gave a small laugh.

“Not legally. The divorce hasn't been finalized.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Let's not make a scene.””

I looked around at the reporters.

“You brought the press.””

His smile disappeared.

“Go upstairs,” Tiana said.

“We can discuss this privately.””

Margaret shook her head.

“Anything you have to say can be said in front of counsel.””

Tiana sighed.

“Always the lawyer.””

She reached into her handbag and removed a small silver envelope.

I recognized the handwriting immediately.

My father's.

My chest tightened.

“Where did you get that?””

“From the safety deposit box.””

“You told me you had taken everything.””

“I didn't say I took everything.””

She held the envelope between two fingers.

“Your father left this for you.””

I reached for it.

She pulled it back.

“First, I need you to answer one question.””

“What?””

“Did Eleanor show you the succession agreement?””

I stared at her.

“How do you know about that?””

Tiana smiled faintly.

“Because Daniel told me.””

I turned toward him.

Daniel looked completely relaxed.

“Your grandfather made a complicated arrangement,” he said.

“Unfortunately, your grandmother has been misrepresenting its terms.””

Margaret stepped forward.

“Mr. Voss, you have no authority over the Sterling Family Trust.””

Daniel ignored her.

“Tiana was designated as a successor. That's a fact.””

“Only if she was unaware of the original fraudulent arrangement,” I replied.

For the first time, Daniel's expression changed.

Tiana looked at him.

“You said that clause didn't matter.””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“It doesn't.””

I watched them.

They had just confirmed something important.

Tiana knew about the clause.

And she knew exactly what it meant.

“You knew the whole time,” I said.

She looked at me.

“Ethan, you have no idea what happened before we met.””

“Then explain it.””

She glanced at Daniel.

He gave a slight shake of his head.

She ignored him.

“I was twenty-four when I met Daniel. My family was struggling financially. My father had lost his business, and we were about to lose our home.””

Daniel interrupted.

“This isn't relevant.””

“Be quiet,” Tiana snapped.

I had never heard her speak to him that way.

She continued.

“Daniel offered me a job. He said I could help him manage private investments. I thought it was legitimate.””

“And then?””

“Then he introduced me to your family.””

I stared at her.

“You approached me because of him?””

She lowered her eyes.

“At first.””

The words landed harder than I expected.

“How long did you intend to keep pretending?””

Tiana's eyes filled with tears.

“I didn't know what would happen.””

“You married me.””

“Yes.””

“You told me you loved me.””

“I did love you.””

I shook my head.

“You don't get to say that.””

She looked away.

Daniel stepped between us.

“This conversation is over.””

Tiana pulled the envelope close to her chest.

“No.””

He turned toward her.

“Tiana.””

She stood her ground.

“You promised me something.””

Daniel's face hardened.

“Don't forget who protected you.””

I looked between them.

“What did he promise you?””

Tiana took a breath.

“Control of the company. Enough money to start over. And protection from the investigation.””

Daniel laughed.

“You were never getting control of anything.””

Her expression changed.

“What?””

“You were useful, Tiana. Don't confuse usefulness with ownership.””

The reporters were now recording everything.

Margaret quietly instructed one of the security guards to keep the lobby doors closed.

Tiana stared at Daniel.

“You said the agreement guaranteed it.””

“It guaranteed a possibility.””

“You said I would be protected!””

Daniel leaned closer.

“Then you should have made sure the documents were signed correctly.””

She slapped him.

The sound echoed across the lobby.

Daniel grabbed her wrist.

“Don't ever do that again.””

I stepped forward.

“Let her go.””

He released her.

Tiana looked at me.

For a moment, she seemed genuinely frightened.

Then she handed me the silver envelope.

“Take it.””

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

*My dear Ethan,*

*If this letter reaches you, then I have failed to prevent a terrible mistake. I need you to know that your mother was not the only person who tried to protect you.*

I stopped reading.

My mother?

My mother had died when I was twelve.

I continued.

*Before she died, she discovered something about the Sterling estate that your grandfather had hidden from everyone. She asked me to keep it secret until you were old enough to understand.*

*The original agreement is not the only document that matters. There is a second beneficiary. Someone whose identity was deliberately concealed.*

My hands began shaking.

The letter continued.

*If Daniel Voss is still alive and Tiana is still involved, then the second beneficiary may be in danger.*

I looked up.

“Who is the second beneficiary?””

Tiana shook her head.

“I don't know.””

Daniel moved toward the elevators.

“Enough.””

Margaret blocked his path.

“Not so fast.””

He stopped.

“Move.””

“Your company is under investigation, and your involvement in the attempted property transfer is now documented.””

Daniel looked at me.

“You have no idea what you've just uncovered.””

Then he turned to Tiana.

“You should have kept your mouth shut.””

He walked away.

I looked down at the letter again.

There was one final line.

*Ask Eleanor what happened to your mother's daughter.*

My heart stopped.

My mother had only one child.

Me.

Or so I had always believed.

I looked at Tiana.

“Did you know about this?””

She stared at the letter.

May you like

Then she whispered something that made my blood run cold.

“Ethan, I think your sister is the person who helped me take the house.””
