Chapter 14: The Last Meeting of the Sterling Family
Robert stood in the doorway wearing an expensive black coat.
He looked older than the man I remembered from the photographs.
But his face was unmistakably my father's.
Same eyes.
Same jaw.
Same expression.
The only difference was the coldness in his smile.
“Well,” he said.
“The family reunion is complete.””
Richard stepped forward.
“It's over, Robert.””
Robert laughed.
“You've been saying that for twenty years.””
Catherine moved closer to me.
Rebecca stood behind her.
I positioned myself between them and the doorway.
Robert glanced at the documents on the table.
“Give me the folder.””
“No,” I said.
He looked at me.
“Ethan. You've always been the difficult one.””
“You sent Tiana into my life.””
“I gave her an opportunity.””
“You destroyed my company.””
“Your company was already weak.””
“You tried to steal my house.””
Robert shrugged.
“Property is property.””
Richard slammed his cane against the floor.
“You used my son's marriage to gain control of the trust.””
Robert's smile disappeared.
“Your son signed the documents willingly.””
“Under false pretenses.””
“Can you prove that?””
Richard pointed toward the folder.
“We have the recordings.””
Robert laughed.
“Recordings can be edited. Signatures can be challenged. Memories can be questioned.””
He stepped into the room.
“But a signed agreement is a signed agreement.””
I looked at him.
“You mean the agreement Rebecca signed?””
“Exactly.””
Rebecca stepped forward.
“You told me I was confirming my inheritance.””
“And you signed.””
“You lied to me.””
Robert shrugged.
“You wanted your money. I helped you get it.””
“You told me Ethan's father stole from me.””
Robert smiled.
“Didn't I?””
Rebecca's eyes filled with tears.
“You knew I was his sister.””
“Of course.””
“And you used that against me.””
Robert glanced at Richard.
“Your father taught me something years ago. Family is useful until it becomes inconvenient.””
Richard stepped toward him.
“Our father never taught you that.””
Robert's expression hardened.
“Don't talk about him.””
“You betrayed everyone who ever trusted you.””
Robert suddenly pulled a document from his coat.
“Enough.””
He placed it on the table.
“Here's what happens next. Ethan and Rebecca sign a joint relinquishment. Catherine confirms the transfer. Richard signs a statement admitting that he authorized the original financial transactions.””
I stared at him.
“And if we refuse?””
Robert looked toward Catherine.
“Then the people who helped your father disappear will become defendants in a very public criminal investigation.””
Catherine shook her head.
“You can't threaten us anymore.””
Robert smiled.
“I can threaten whoever I want.””
Then he looked at me.
“Your wife understood that.””
I stepped closer.
“Where is Tiana?””
“Safe.””
“Where?””
“Somewhere she can think about her future.””
I clenched my fists.
“You're holding her?””
“I'm protecting an investment.””
Richard moved forward.
“You're going to prison, Robert.””
Robert laughed.
“Not before you.””
He tapped the document.
“Sign.””
Nobody moved.
Then a voice came from the entrance.
“I'm afraid that won't be necessary.””
Margaret walked into the factory.
Behind her were Special Agent Walker and four federal officers.
Robert turned.
His expression changed.
Walker displayed his credentials.
“Robert Sterling, also known as Daniel Voss, you're under arrest.””
Robert slowly stepped away from the table.
“This is a private property dispute.””
“Not anymore.””
Walker held up a folder.
“We have evidence of identity fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy, financial exploitation, attempted murder, and multiple forged corporate transactions.””
Robert looked at Margaret.
“You gave them everything?””
Margaret didn't answer.
Walker continued.
“We also recovered the original death records establishing the identity of the man buried under the name Daniel Voss.””
Robert looked toward Richard.
For the first time, his confidence cracked.
“You planned this.””
Richard shook his head.
“No. You did. Every lie.
Every transfer. Every forged signature. You built the evidence against yourself.””
Robert suddenly lunged toward the table.
He grabbed the ownership folder.
One of the officers moved immediately.
Robert knocked over a chair and tried to reach the rear corridor.
But another officer blocked the exit.
“Stop!””
Robert froze.
Walker approached him.
“Put the documents down.””
Robert looked at the folder.
Then at Richard.
“You think you've won?””
Richard said nothing.
“You'll regret this.””
Walker took the folder.
“Turn around.””
Robert was handcuffed.
As the officers escorted him out, he turned toward me.
“Ethan, you still don't understand. Your father wasn't protecting you. He was protecting himself.””
I watched him disappear through the doorway.
Then I turned toward Richard.
“Is that true?””
My father sat down heavily.
“I made mistakes.””
“What mistakes?””
Richard looked at Catherine.
She nodded.
He took a long breath.
“Your grandfather discovered that I had allowed Robert to manage several company accounts. When I realized what he'd done, I tried to correct it. But some of the transactions had been authorized under my name.””
“So you helped him.””
“I didn't know the full extent of the fraud.””
“But you signed the documents.””
“Yes.””
I looked away.
My father had spent years hiding from the consequences of his own decisions.
He had also spent years trying to protect us.
Both things could be true.
“Why didn't you come back when Robert was exposed?””
“Because he wasn't the only person involved.””
I turned.
“What do you mean?””
Richard looked at Margaret.
She removed another document from her briefcase.
It was a statement from Tiana.
“She has agreed to cooperate,” Margaret explained.
I stared.
“Why?””
“Because Robert has been arrested, and she understands that she may face charges.””
I felt nothing.
“Where is she?””
Margaret hesitated.
“At the federal building.””
“Did she tell them everything?””
“Almost.””
“What does that mean?””
Margaret opened the statement.
“Tiana claims she received instructions from someone other than Robert.””
I looked at her.
“Who?””
Margaret turned the document around.
The name was handwritten at the bottom.
*Eleanor Sterling.*
I felt the blood drain from my face.
“That can't be right.””
Richard stood.
“Eleanor?””
Margaret nodded.
“According to Tiana, your grandmother authorized the original plan to bring Tiana into the family.””
I looked at my father.
He didn't answer.
Catherine stepped forward.
“Richard?””
My father lowered his head.
“It's possible.””
I stared at him.
“Are you telling me Grandma was involved?””
Richard took a long breath.
“Your grandmother knew Tiana before your wedding. She believed she could use her to get close to Robert and gather evidence.””
I shook my head.
“She let me marry her?””
“She thought she could control the situation.””
“Did she know Tiana was going to steal the house?””
“No.””
I laughed bitterly.
“So everyone decided my marriage was a chess game.””
Nobody answered.
Then Margaret's phone rang.
She listened.
Her face changed.
“Ethan, we need to go.””
“What now?””
“Your grandmother has disappeared.””
Richard grabbed his cane.
“Where?””
Margaret looked at the message.
“Her security team found her car abandoned outside the estate.””
I stared at the screen.
There was a second message.
A photograph of Eleanor sitting in the back of a black vehicle.
And beneath it, a short note.
*Bring the original ownership agreement. Come alone.*
I looked at my father.
He was already reaching for his coat.
“I'm coming with you.””
I shook my head.
“No. If Robert has another person working with him, we can't risk losing everyone.””
Richard grabbed my shoulder.
“Ethan, you don't understand what Eleanor may have done.””
“Then tell me.””
He looked at the photograph.
“Your grandmother may have known the identity of the person who ordered my medication changed.””
I froze.
“Who?””
Richard's voice broke.
“Me.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
“I signed the original medication order.””
The room went silent.
My father looked at me.
“But I never authorized the overdose.””
May you like
He swallowed.
“Eleanor was the only person who knew the difference.””
