Chapter 11: The Sister Who Was Never My Sister
Claire stood up so quickly that her chair fell backward.
“She's lying.””
I looked at her.
“Margaret says you're her daughter.””
“She doesn't know what she's talking about.””
“Then explain.””
Claire shook her head.
“Daniel, please. You've got to stop listening to strangers.””
“Margaret isn't a stranger to you, is she?””
Her lips trembled.
I pointed toward the photograph.
“Is that why you knew so much about Elena's adoption? Is that why you were involved with Richard?””
Claire covered her face.
Detective Morgan moved closer.
“Mrs. Hayes, I need you to answer the question.””
She looked at him.
“I don't have to explain my personal history.””
“You do if it relates to a suspected homicide.””
Claire sat down again.
For a long moment, she stared at the table.
Then she spoke.
“My mother wasn't my biological mother.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Who was?””
“Margaret.””
Noah looked at her.
“So you're Elena's sister?””
Claire nodded.
“Half-sister.””
Madeline slowly sat down.
I stared at Claire.
“How long have you known?””
“Since I was sixteen.””
“And you never told me?””
“Our mother made me promise.””
“Your mother?””
Claire looked up.
“The woman who raised us. The woman you called Mom.””
I felt a bitter laugh escape my throat.
“So the woman who raised me wasn't Elena's biological mother, and she wasn't your biological mother?””
Claire shook her head.
“She adopted us both.””
I stood.
“Why?””
“Because Margaret couldn't raise us. She was young, struggling financially, and your father had abandoned her.””
“Both of you?””
Claire nodded.
“Elena was born first. I came years later.””
I looked at the photograph again.
My father had fathered both women.
The woman I married and the sister I grew up with.
The thought made me physically sick.
“Did Elena know you were her half-sister?””
“Yes.””
“Did you know she was my wife?””
Claire looked away.
“I knew before you married her.””
My hands began trembling.
“And you let us get married?””
“I didn't know the full truth at the time.””
“You just admitted you knew!””
“I knew we shared a biological father. I didn't know Elena and you had the same father.””
I stared at her.
“Then how did you know about the adoption?””
Claire took a breath.
“Margaret told me when I was sixteen. She said our father had another family. She said Elena had been raised by your mother.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because your mother threatened to send me away.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You were my sister. You could have told me anything.””
Claire's eyes filled.
“She said if I revealed the truth, she would make sure Margaret never saw me again.””
I looked toward Detective Morgan.
“Can this be verified?””
He nodded.
“We'll need official records and DNA testing. But the information is relevant.””
Claire rubbed her hands together.
“There's something else.””
I closed my eyes.
I was beginning to dread those words.
“What?””
“Your mother knew Elena and you were together.””
“You said that already.””
“No. I mean she knew the biological relationship.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
Claire began crying.
“She found out six months before the wedding.””
I gripped the table.
“Then why didn't she stop it?””
“She tried.””
“How?””
“She told Elena she would expose everything unless Elena ended the relationship.””
I stared at Claire.
“But Elena married me anyway.””
Claire nodded.
“She loved you.””
For the first time, I felt tears rise behind my eyes.
All those years.
All those mornings.
All those ordinary moments when Elena had made coffee, kissed my forehead, and asked how my day was going.
Had she been carrying the knowledge that we were related?
Had she spent our entire marriage afraid?
“Did she ever tell me?”” I asked.
Claire shook her head.
“No.””
I looked toward the window.
Outside, rain ran down the glass in crooked lines.
Detective Morgan broke the silence.
“Mrs. Hayes, why did you arrange the mortgage against Daniel's property?””
Claire flinched.
“I didn't arrange it.””
“We have a photograph of you with Richard outside the bank.””
“I was there to sign something.””
“What?””
“A guarantee.””
“For whom?””
She hesitated.
“For Vanessa.””
I stared at her.
“Why would you guarantee Vanessa's debt?””
“Because Richard told me he would repay it.””
“And the mortgage?””
“I didn't know it was connected to Daniel's house.””
Detective Morgan opened another folder.
“Your signature appears on the authorization documents.””
Claire shook her head.
“I never signed those.””
“Then someone forged your signature too?””
She nodded.
I watched her carefully.
“Who had access to your documents?””
Claire looked at me.
“Richard.””
“And who else?””
She swallowed.
“Your mother.””
I stared at her.
“My mother has been dead for nineteen years.””
“I know.””
“Stop blaming a dead woman for everything!””
Claire suddenly raised her voice.
“You don't understand! She controlled every part of our lives!””
I stepped back.
“She was my mother.””
“She was also a woman who built an entire family around lies!””
The room went silent.
Claire took a shaky breath.
“She kept the adoption records. She controlled Margaret. She told Elena that if she ever revealed the truth, she would destroy both of us.””
I looked at the photograph of my mother.
A familiar face.
A familiar smile.
The woman who had taught me to ride a bicycle and held my hand at my father's funeral.
I didn't know who she had really been.
Claire continued.
“Before she died, she made me promise to protect the family.””
“From what?””
“From the truth.””
I stared at her.
“And you thought killing Elena would protect it?””
Claire's head snapped up.
“I didn't kill Elena!””
“Then why did you take Noah's phone?””
She went silent.
“Why did you tell him to run?””
Claire began crying harder.
“Because I was trying to protect him.””
“From whom?””
She looked toward the door.
Then she whispered:
“Richard.””
Detective Morgan leaned forward.
“Explain.””
Claire swallowed.
“Richard was still inside the house when Elena fell.””
I felt my heart pound.
“You told us you arrived afterward.””
“I lied.””
“Why?””
“Because Richard threatened me.””
She looked directly at me.
“He said if I told anyone what I saw, he would tell the police that I had pushed Elena.””
Noah stepped forward.
“What did you see?””
Claire's lips trembled.
“I saw Richard standing over her.””
The room became completely silent.
“Was Elena alive?”” I asked.
Claire nodded.
“She was trying to move. She was reaching for something.””
“What?””
“A blue folder.””
I remembered the photograph from the storage unit.
Claire outside the bank, holding a blue folder.
“Where is that folder now?””
Claire looked at me.
“Richard took it.””
Detective Morgan closed his notebook.
“Then we need to find him.””
But before anyone could move, Claire spoke again.
“There is one more thing.””
I turned.
“What now?””
She looked at Noah.
“Your mother didn't die because of the adoption papers.””
Noah frowned.
“Then why?””
Claire's voice became a whisper.
“Because she found out that someone had been paying Richard to keep the entire family silent.””
“Who?””
Claire reached into her coat and pulled out a small photograph.
It showed Richard standing beside a woman outside a hotel.
The woman was holding his hand.
I recognized her immediately.
My mother.
But the photograph was dated six months ago.
I stared at it.
That was impossible.
My mother had been buried nineteen years earlier.

Then Claire said:
“The woman who raised us isn't the only person who has been pretending to be dead.””
