Chapter 7: The Night My Son Became a Suspect
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
The photograph remained on Noah's phone.
It showed him standing outside our house at 9:42 p.m. on the night Elena died. His hood was pulled over his head, and one hand was pressed against the front gate.
I looked at my son.
“Tell me that's not you.””
Noah didn't answer.
“Look at me, Noah.””
He slowly raised his eyes.
“It's me.””
The words hurt more than I expected.
“You told me you weren't there.””
“I said I didn't see what happened.””
“That's not what I asked you.””
He rubbed his forehead.
“Dad, please. You need to let me explain.””
Madeline stepped between us.
“Daniel, perhaps we should listen before jumping to conclusions.””
I barely heard her.
My wife had died in that house. Someone had stolen our money, forged my signature, and possibly arranged a mortgage against our property.
Now my son had admitted being there on the night she died.
And Claire had just told me that he was involved.
I turned toward him.
“Why were you at the house?””
Noah looked at the recorder.
“Because Mom called me.””
“What time?””
“Just after nine.””
“What did she say?””
“She told me to come immediately. She sounded frightened.””
“Why didn't you tell the police?””
“Because I thought they would blame me.””
“For what?””
Noah looked away.
That was when I noticed his hands.
He was holding them together so tightly that his knuckles had turned white.
“Show me your hands,” I said.
He frowned.
“What?””
“Your hands.””
Slowly, he opened them.
There was a thin scar across his right palm.
I had seen it before.
He had told me he cut himself while fixing his motorcycle.
But now I remembered something else.
The night Elena died, the police had mentioned broken glass near the kitchen stairs.
“Where did you get that scar?””
Noah's eyes filled.
“From that night.””
My stomach dropped.
Madeline took a step backward.
“Did you hurt her?””
“No!””
His voice cracked.
“I would never hurt Mom.””
“Then tell us what happened.””
Noah sat on a cardboard box.
For a moment, he looked like the little boy who used to hide behind Elena whenever he was in trouble.
“I arrived at 9:30,” he began.
“The front door was unlocked. Mom was in the kitchen, and she was crying.””
“What about Vanessa?””
“She was there.””
“And Richard?””
Noah nodded.
“He was standing near the stairs.””
I closed my eyes.
“Go on.””
“Mom had papers spread across the table. She was shouting at them about the mortgage and the missing money. Richard kept telling her to sign something.””
“What?””
“I don't know. I couldn't see.””
Noah swallowed.
“Vanessa was crying. She kept saying they had no choice.””
Madeline's voice trembled.
“Did they mention me?””
Noah nodded.
“Mom said the money belonged to you. She said they had stolen your inheritance.””
Madeline covered her mouth.
Noah continued.
“Then Richard grabbed Mom's arm. She pulled away. He told her she was making a terrible mistake.””
I felt my fingers curl.
“What did you do?””
“I stepped between them.””
He looked directly at me.
“I told Richard to leave.””
“Did he?””
“Eventually. But before he went, he told Mom that if she contacted the police, everyone would suffer.””
“And Vanessa?””
“She left with him.””
I stared at my son.
“Then why didn't you stay with your mother?””
Noah's face crumpled.
“Because she told me to go.””
“Why?””
“She said she needed to make one phone call. She promised she would lock the doors and call you.””
I shook my head.
“That doesn't make sense.””
“I know.””
He wiped his eyes.
“I argued with her. I told her I wasn't leaving her alone. But she said she had to speak to someone privately.””
“Who?””
Noah hesitated.
“Claire.””
I felt the blood drain from my face.
“My sister?””
He nodded.
“Mom said Claire knew where the original mortgage documents were hidden.””
I looked at Madeline.
She was staring at the floor.
“What happened next?”” I asked.
“I left. I went to my car. I hadn't even driven to the end of the street when I heard a crash.””
My heart hammered.
“I turned around and ran back.””
He began shaking.
“The kitchen door was open. Mom was at the bottom of the stairs.””
I couldn't breathe.
“Was she alive?””
Noah nodded.
“She was breathing. Barely.””
“Did you call an ambulance?””
“Yes. I called 911.””
“Then why did you disappear?””
Noah's face changed.
“Because someone else arrived before the ambulance.””
“Who?””
He looked at me.
“Claire.””
The storage unit seemed suddenly much smaller.
Noah continued.
“She told me to leave. She said she would explain everything to the police. She said if anyone saw me there, they would think I had pushed Mom.””
“Why would they think that?””
“Because I had been arguing with Richard earlier.””
He looked down.
“Then she took my phone.””
My stomach tightened.
“She took your phone?””
“She said she needed to delete something. I didn't know what. I was in shock. I just ran.””
I stared at him.
“You let your aunt take your phone?””
“I was scared, Dad!””
His voice echoed through the storage unit.
“I had just found my mother dying on the floor. I didn't know what to do.””
I wanted to embrace him.
I wanted to shake him.
Instead, I asked the question that had been tearing through my mind.
“Why did you tell me you hadn't seen what happened?””
“Because I didn't see her fall.””
He looked at me desperately.
“I only heard it.””
Before I could respond, Madeline picked up the recorder.
“There's another file.””
Noah looked at her.
“What?””
She pointed to the display.
A second recording had appeared beneath the first.
It was dated the same night.
I pressed play.
At first, there was only static.
Then Elena's voice.
“Claire, please. You have to understand what Richard is doing.””
A second voice answered.
Claire.
“I understand perfectly.””
Elena sounded frightened.
“Then help me.””
Claire laughed bitterly.
“You should have helped me twenty years ago.””
The recording stopped abruptly.
I stared at the device.
Twenty years ago?
What had Elena done to my sister?
And why had Claire arrived at our house after my wife fell?
Then my phone rang.
The caller ID displayed a name I hadn't expected.
*DETECTIVE MORGAN.*
I answered.
“Mr. Hayes,” he said, “I need you to come to the station immediately.””
“Why?””
There was a pause.
“We've just received a statement from your sister.””
My throat tightened.
“What did she say?””
The detective lowered his voice.
“She claims your son was the last person alone with your wife before she died.””
I looked at Noah.
May you like
Then Detective Morgan added:
“And she's accusing him of pushing her.””
