Chapter 3: The Man Who Came to Stop the Truth

Richard Cole had always been the quietest man in our family.

He rarely raised his voice. He wore expensive suits, spoke carefully, and preferred listening to talking.

He had built a successful property investment company and often joked that his greatest achievement was surviving twenty years of marriage to Vanessa.

I had laughed at those jokes.

Now, watching him approach the coffin, I wondered how many things I had laughed at without understanding.

“Richard,” I said.

“What are you doing here?””

He stopped beneath the tent.

His shoes were polished despite the rain.

“I came to help.””

“Help with what?””

He looked at Noah.

“With this situation.””

Noah stepped closer to me.

“Stay away from my phone.””

Richard gave him a disappointed look.

“Son, you're upset. You've been through a terrible experience.””

“Don't call me son.””

“I'm trying to protect you.””

“From what?””

Richard opened his leather folder.

Inside were several printed documents.

He placed them on the table.

“Your mother had been experiencing serious emotional difficulties. She was under medical care. Her judgment wasn't always reliable.””

I looked at the papers.

They were copies of Elena's medical records.

My hands tightened.

“Where did you get these?””

“Vanessa gave them to me.””

“You had no right.””

Richard sighed.

“Daniel, we need to be sensible.””

“My wife is dead. My son has just told me your wife was with her that night. And now you're showing me medical records?””

Richard lowered his voice.

“Your wife was taking medication. She had been experiencing dizziness and confusion. The accident was unfortunate, but it wasn't anyone's fault.””

I looked at him.

“Who told you she fell?””

He hesitated.

“The police report.””

“The report doesn't say who was in the house.””

Richard glanced at Vanessa.

A tiny movement.

But I saw it.

Noah saw it too.

“You were there,” Noah said.

Richard turned toward him.

“Excuse me?””

“You were there that night.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Noah, stop making things up.””

But Noah wasn't looking at her.

He was staring at Richard.

“Mom told me there were two people in the house.””

Richard's expression hardened.

“What exactly did your mother tell you?””

Noah pulled his phone from his pocket.

“That's what the second recording is for.””

Richard took one step forward.

“Give it to me.””

“No.””

“I said give it to me.””

I moved between them.

“Don't touch my son.””

Richard stopped.

For the first time, I saw something beneath his calm expression.

Anger.

Not the kind that comes from being insulted.

The kind that comes from losing control.

He looked at me.

“Daniel, I know you're grieving. But you need to understand that playing private recordings in front of strangers could create serious legal problems.””

“Are you threatening us?””

“I'm advising you.””

“Then here's my advice. Walk away.””

Richard glanced toward the grave.

“The funeral should continue.””

“No.””

“Your wife deserves peace.””

I looked at him for several seconds.

Then I said, “My wife deserves the truth.””

His jaw tightened.

He turned to Vanessa.

“Get in the car.””

She didn't move.

“Richard—”

“Now.””

The two security attendants looked at each other.

Vanessa slowly picked up her handbag.

But before she could leave, Noah spoke.

“Dad, play the recording.””

Richard spun around.

“No!””

The word came out so violently that several mourners stepped back.

Noah pressed the screen.

A faint electronic sound came through the speaker.

Then Elena's voice.

“It's recording, Noah. If anything happens, I want you to know what I found.””

My knees nearly gave way.

I reached for the table.

The recording continued.

“Vanessa has been taking money from our account for months. I confronted her yesterday, but she says Richard knows nothing about it.””

A pause.

Then Elena sighed.

“I don't believe her.””

I looked at Richard.

His face had become expressionless.

Elena continued.

“Richard's company has been losing money. I found several transfers connected to properties that don't exist. I think they've been using my account to cover their debts.””

Vanessa started crying again.

Richard stared at the phone.

Then Elena said something that made Noah stop breathing.

“There's another thing. Richard came to the house tonight. He told me I had no right to investigate his business.””

A loud thud sounded in the background.

Elena's breathing became unsteady.

“He said if I told Daniel, I would ruin everyone.””

I felt a cold pressure spread across my chest.

The recording crackled.

Then a man's voice appeared.

Richard's.

“You should have left this alone, Elena.””

My eyes lifted.

Richard didn't move.

Elena answered.

“I trusted you.””

“You still can.””

“You stole from us.””

“It's temporary.””

“Half a million dollars isn't temporary.””

Richard's voice became sharper.

“You have no idea what you're talking about.””

“I have the statements.””

“Then give them to me.””

“No.””

A chair scraped.

Something crashed to the floor.

Then Elena screamed.

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Rain tapped against the tent roof.

I stared at Richard.

“You were in my house.””

He swallowed.

“Daniel, listen to me—”

“You were in my house while my wife was frightened.””

“I was trying to resolve a financial disagreement.””

“She was screaming!””

“People say things when they're angry.””

Noah stepped forward.

“You were there when she fell.””

Richard's eyes narrowed.

“I did not push your mother.””

The words landed like a stone.

I hadn't asked him that.

Neither had Noah.

Richard realized his mistake.

His mouth opened.

Then closed.

I felt something inside me break.

“You just told us you weren't there.””

He looked toward Vanessa.

She was crying silently now.

“Richard,” she whispered.

He ignored her.

“Daniel, the recording doesn't prove anything.””

“Then why are you so afraid of the next one?””

Noah looked down at the screen.

“There are two more files.””

Richard's shoulders stiffened.

The next recording began automatically.

At first, there was only static.

Then Elena's voice returned.

“Daniel, if you're hearing this, I'm sorry.””

My heart stopped.

I stepped closer.

“I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner. I thought I could fix everything before it reached you.””

Her voice was trembling.

“I need you to know that Vanessa wasn't the only person who came to the house that night.””

I looked at Richard.

He was staring at the ground.

Elena continued.

“Someone else came after Richard left.””

Noah looked at me.

I could barely breathe.

“Someone who knew about the money. Someone who had access to our house. Someone I trusted enough to let inside.””

There was a pause.

Then Elena whispered:

“Daniel, it was someone from your side of the family.””

The recording ended.

I stood motionless.

My mind raced through every relative, every friend, every person who had visited our home.

Then a sound came from behind us.

A woman's voice.

“Daniel?””

I turned.

My younger sister, Claire, stood at the entrance to the cemetery.

She was holding a small white envelope.

Her face was pale.

She looked at Noah's phone.

Then at Richard.

Finally, she looked at me.

“Please tell me you haven't listened to everything.””

I stared at her.

“Why?””

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

“Because Elena promised she would never tell you what happened twenty years ago.””

She walked toward the coffin and placed the envelope on top of the white roses.

Then she whispered:

“Daniel, the person who came to your house that night wasn't the only secret your wife was keeping from you.””

May you like

She looked directly into my eyes.

“Your son isn't the only child Elena had.””
