Helena could not simply take that money if Sage disappeared.
Her motive was governance.
For twenty-five years, Helena had served as the family’s unofficial stabilizer.
She mediated disputes.
Controlled philanthropic appointments.
Influenced board nominees.
People called her:
“The quiet Kessler.”
She liked that role.
Too much.
She believed Gideon was impulsive.
Martin weak.
Isabelle uninterested in business.
She saw herself as the adult keeping the family together.
Sage’s existence would trigger appointment of an independent descendant fiduciary.
That person could review transactions affecting Gideon’s branch.
Helena hated outside oversight.
