Chapter 2: The Man Beside the Black Car
The stranger crossed the bright reception lawn with measured steps.
Guests shifted aside to let him pass. His charcoal suit was immaculate, his expression unreadable, and a silver watch gleamed beneath his cuff.
Brianna watched him approach as if every step were bringing a sentence closer to a verdict.
Marcus noticed.
“Brianna,” he said, keeping his voice low, “why are you looking at that man like you've seen a ghost?””
“I haven't.””
“Then turn around and look at me.””
She didn't.
Evelyn stood between the white floral arch and a table arranged with crystal glasses. Her phone remained in her right hand, the refund notification still visible.
The wedding planner, Denise, glanced from the stranger to the couple.
“Sir, this is a private wedding reception,” she said professionally.
“Can I help you?””
The man stopped several feet away.
“I'm looking for Brianna Carter.””
Marcus immediately stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
The stranger regarded him for a moment.
“My name is David Cole.””
Nobody spoke.
A breeze lifted the edge of Brianna's veil. Somewhere behind them, a guest accidentally knocked a spoon against a glass. The sharp metallic sound seemed strangely loud.
Marcus looked at the phone in Evelyn's hand.
Then at the stranger.
Then at his bride.
“You're David Cole?””
“Yes.””
“Why is your name on my wedding refund?””
David's expression changed slightly.
“Your wedding refund?””
“Don't play games with me.”” Marcus pointed toward Evelyn's screen.
“Seventy-eight thousand four hundred dollars is supposed to be refunded to an account with your name on it. Explain that.””
David glanced at Brianna.
“I see she hasn't told you.””
“Told me what?””
Brianna finally moved.
“David, you need to leave.””
He looked at her.
“You told me this would already be handled.””
“Not here.””
“You said the account would be settled before the ceremony.””
“Stop talking!””
Several guests turned toward them again.
Denise approached, tablet still in hand.
“I'm going to ask everyone to lower their voices. We have vendors waiting for confirmation, and I cannot authorize any changes until the account holder verifies the details.””
David nodded once.
“That's reasonable.””
Brianna looked furious.
“Why are you even here?””
David slipped a folded document from the inside pocket of his jacket.
“Because you stopped answering my calls.””
“I was getting married!””
“I know. You sent me the schedule.””
Marcus's face tightened.
“You sent him the wedding schedule?””
Brianna turned toward him.
“It's not what you think.””
Marcus let out a short, disbelieving laugh.
“That's interesting. Because I haven't even told you what I think yet.””
Evelyn watched her daughter carefully.
She had seen Brianna lie before. Small lies when she was a teenager. Larger ones when she was a young adult trying to hide financial mistakes. But this was different.
Brianna wasn't improvising.
She was terrified that somebody would say the wrong thing.
“David,” Evelyn said, “why is your name attached to a refund from money I paid?””
David turned toward her, and his expression softened.
“Mrs. Carter, I don't believe we've met properly.””
“No, we haven't.””
“My apologies.””
He extended his hand.
Evelyn didn't take it.
“Please answer my question.””
David lowered his hand.
“I can explain the account arrangement, but I need to know what Brianna has already told Marcus.””
“Nothing,” Marcus said.
“Apparently, I've been the last person invited to my own wedding.””
Brianna grabbed his arm.
“Marcus, listen to me. I can explain everything privately.””
He removed her hand from his sleeve.
“No more private conversations. No more telling me to trust you while you refuse to answer a simple question.””
“I'm trying to protect you.””
“From what?””
Her mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
The wedding planner stepped between the guests and the small group, attempting to keep the confrontation from spreading.
“Mr. Cole, if you're connected to the refund account, I need to see identification and documentation before discussing any financial details.””
David nodded and offered his identification. Denise checked it against the information on her tablet.
After a moment, she looked up.
“Your name matches the destination account.””
Marcus stared at him.
“Why?””
David drew a slow breath.
“Because the account wasn't created for this wedding.””
Evelyn's fingers tightened around her phone.
“What was it created for?””
David looked toward Brianna.
She shook her head once, almost imperceptibly.
He noticed.
And for a moment, he seemed to reconsider what he was about to say.
“I think that question should be answered by the person who arranged the transfer,” he said.
Marcus turned to Brianna.
“Did you arrange it?””
“No.””
The answer came too quickly.
Denise looked down at her tablet.
“That's strange.””
Brianna snapped her head toward her.
“What is?””
“The payment authorization.”” Denise tapped the screen twice.
“Mrs. Carter made the original payments, but the refund instructions were updated last week. The change was authorized using a separate account login.””
Evelyn felt a cold sensation travel down her spine despite the warm sunlight on her face.
“Last week?””
“Yes.””
“Who changed it?””
Denise examined the details.
“The record lists an authorized user. I can't display all the personal information here, but I can confirm that the change was not made from Mrs. Carter's account.””
Marcus stared at his bride.
“Then whose account was used?””
Denise hesitated.
Brianna stepped forward.
“This is ridiculous. The money belongs to the wedding. It's going toward wedding expenses.””
“Then why does it say David Cole?”” Marcus asked.
“Because he was helping me!””
The words escaped before Brianna could stop herself.
David lowered his gaze.
Marcus went very still.
“Helping you with what?””
Brianna pressed her fingers against her forehead.
“I was trying to make sure everything was taken care of.””
“By putting my wedding refund into an account with another man?””
“It's not another man!””
The entire group fell silent.
Brianna seemed to hear her own words for the first time.
David folded the document in his hand.
“Brianna, you need to tell him.””
She turned toward him with an expression of pure fury.
“You promised me.””
David's jaw tightened.
“I promised I wouldn't humiliate you. I never promised to lie forever.””
Marcus stepped between them.
“Tell me what?””
David looked at Marcus, then at Evelyn.
“Before I answer, there's something you both need to understand. I didn't come here to collect money.””
“Then why are you here?”” Marcus demanded.
David opened the folded document.
Inside was a printed copy of a transaction record. He held it out to Denise, who studied it carefully.
Her face changed.
“Mr. Cole,” she said, “this document includes an additional authorization.””
“Yes.””
“From whom?””
David didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he looked directly at Evelyn.
“Mrs. Carter, did you ever authorize your daughter to open an account using your financial information?””
Evelyn's heart began beating harder.
“No.””
Brianna closed her eyes.
Marcus looked from David to his bride.
“What does my future mother-in-law have to do with this?””
David placed the document on the nearest table.
“That's the question I've been trying to get Brianna to answer for three weeks.””
Brianna reached for the paper.
David moved his hand over it.
“Don't.””
“You have no right to show them that!””
“Then tell the truth before I do.””
Marcus seized the edge of the document and pulled it toward himself.
At the top was a transaction reference number.
Beneath it was the name of the financial institution.
And in the authorization section, beside a signature that looked disturbingly similar to Evelyn's, was a date from three weeks earlier.
Evelyn leaned forward.
“That isn't my signature.””
David looked at her.
“I know.””
Brianna's breathing became shallow.
Marcus stared at the document, his face hardening with every passing second.
“Brianna,” he whispered, “what exactly did you sign?””
Before she could answer, Denise's tablet chimed.
A new notification appeared on the payment record.
*REFUND REVIEW — SECONDARY ACCOUNT VERIFICATION REQUIRED.*
Denise read the next line.
Then she looked up, visibly alarmed.
“There's another account attached to this transaction.””
Marcus's gaze snapped toward the screen.
“What other account?””
Denise hesitated.
Brianna suddenly reached for the tablet.
“No! Don't open that!””
David caught her wrist—not roughly, but firmly enough to stop her.
“Brianna,” he said, “it's too late.””
The tablet displayed a second account holder.
Marcus leaned closer.
Evelyn watched the color drain from her daughter's face.
May you like
Because the name on the screen wasn't David Cole's.
It was someone Evelyn had buried eleven years ago.
