Chapter 9: The Woman Who Was Never Told

“Your mother?””

Evelyn stared at Marcus.

He nodded slowly, his eyes fixed on the tablet.

“My mother inherited everything from my grandmother. Every account, every property, every document that was legally hers.””

David checked the record again.

“The index lists a transfer authorization, but it doesn't establish that the transfer was completed lawfully. We need the original account statements and the estate documents.””

Marcus took out his phone.

“I need to call her.””

Brianna stood.

“Marcus, wait.””

He looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because if your mother is involved, we should be careful about what we say.””

His expression hardened.

“You have spent the entire afternoon telling me to be careful. Every time I listen, another secret appears.””

“I'm trying to help.””

“Then let me call my mother.””

He walked toward the windows and dialed.

The call connected after several rings.

“Marcus, darling?”” a woman's voice answered.

“Is everything all right? I thought you were getting married today.””

Marcus swallowed.

“Mom, I need to ask you something about Grandma Loretta's estate.””

A pause.

“What about it?””

“Did Grandma ever have an account connected to Reed Holdings?””

Another pause, longer this time.

“Why are you asking me that?””

“Because I've found a document with her name on it. It suggests money was transferred from one of her accounts nearly thirty years ago.””

His mother said nothing.

“Mom?””

“I don't know what you've found, but you need to stop looking at those documents.””

Marcus stared through the window.

“Why?””

“Because your grandfather handled the business affairs. Your grandmother trusted him.””

“That's not an answer.””

“Marcus, please. Not today.””

He turned toward the others.

“I'm standing in the middle of my wedding reception, and I have discovered that my fiancée's father may have been investigating my family for years. I need an answer.””

His mother's voice softened.

“Who else is there?””

“Evelyn Carter, Brianna, David Cole, and the attorney handling the Carter trust.””

Silence.

Then his mother asked, “Did you say Evelyn Carter?””

“Yes.””

“Is Andrew's wife there?””

Evelyn's heart skipped.

Marcus looked directly at her.

“Yes. She's here.””

His mother released a shaky breath.

“Then I suppose the truth has finally caught up with us.””

Marcus went pale.

“What truth?””

“Your grandmother left a letter. I found it after your grandfather died.””

“What's in it?””

“I was told never to show it to anyone.””

“By whom?””

“Your grandfather.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Mom, I need you to listen to me. Someone used Andrew Carter's signature on a loan guarantee dated years after he died. My fiancée has debts connected to Reed Holdings. The Carter trust may contain money that originally belonged to Grandma Loretta.””

His mother gasped.

“Brianna?””

“Yes.””

“Oh, Marcus.””

He stared at the phone.

“You know her?””

“I've met her.””

Marcus looked across the room at Brianna.

“When?””

“Several months ago. She came to the house with your father.””

The words struck him like a physical blow.

“My father brought her to your house?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because your father said it was a private business matter.””

Marcus turned away from everyone.

“What did they discuss?””

His mother hesitated.

“An inheritance.””

“Whose inheritance?””

“Your grandmother's.””

Marcus's jaw tightened.

“Did Brianna ask you for money?””

“No. She asked me whether I knew Andrew Carter.””

Evelyn stepped closer.

“What did you tell her?””

Marcus's mother heard her voice through the phone.

“Mrs. Carter?””

“Yes.””

“I told Brianna that your husband had once tried to contact my mother about a missing account. I was very young, but I remember the argument that followed.””

Evelyn's fingers trembled.

“What argument?””

“My grandfather accused Andrew of trying to take money that didn't belong to him. Andrew said the money had been moved without the beneficiary's consent.””

David leaned forward.

“Did your grandmother ever file a complaint?””

“I don't know. I was a child. But after that argument, my grandfather locked several cabinets in his study and forbade anyone from discussing the matter.””

Marcus looked at David.

“Can you retrieve the old company records?””

“I can help identify the relevant records. Access will depend on the company's legal and archival procedures.””

Marcus returned to the call.

“Mom, where is Grandma's letter?””

“In a locked box at the house.””

“Can you bring it here?””

“No.””

“Why not?””

“Because I think you need to hear something first.””

Marcus's expression changed.

“What?””

His mother lowered her voice.

“Your father told me that if you ever became involved with Andrew Carter's family, I should make sure you knew the truth about your grandfather.””

Marcus looked at Evelyn.

She felt the same cold sensation she had experienced when Andrew's recording began.

“What truth?”” Marcus asked.

His mother answered with a single sentence.

“Your grandfather didn't lose that money. He moved it.””

Nobody spoke.

Marcus's phone remained pressed against his ear.

“Where did he move it?””

“I don't know. That's what Andrew was trying to establish.””

“Then why did Dad say it was a private business matter?””

“Because he was afraid the discovery would destroy our family.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“And hiding it wouldn't?””

His mother began to cry.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

He ended the call.

For several seconds, he stared at his phone as if he expected another answer to appear.

Then he placed it on the table.

“My father knew about the missing money. My mother knew about Andrew. And Brianna met both of them before we were engaged.””

Brianna stepped toward him.

“I didn't know what they were hiding.””

“You knew enough to keep asking questions.””

“I thought your family could help me find the trust.””

“Why?””

“Because David said the account might contain money that belonged to my father.””

David shook his head.

“I told you the trust might contain assets connected to a disputed business transaction. I never told you the money belonged to Andrew personally.””

Brianna stared at him.

“You said he had millions.””

“I said the records suggested the assets could be substantial. That is not the same thing.””

Evelyn felt exhausted.

“Brianna, why did you tell Marcus that your father promised you the money?””

“Because I believed he had.””

“Did you ever read the trust agreement?””

“No.””

“Did you know the assets might belong to another family?””

“No.””

“Then you were prepared to take money you hadn't verified belonged to you.””

Brianna's shoulders dropped.

“I thought it was my inheritance.””

Evelyn looked at her daughter for a long moment.

“You thought it was yours because you wanted it to be yours.””

Brianna began crying again.

Marcus picked up his wedding ring.

“I need to ask you one final question.””

Brianna nodded desperately.

“Anything.””

“Did you ever plan to tell me about the debt before we got married?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“After the wedding.””

“After I signed whatever documents your father-in-law might have put in front of us?””

“I wasn't going to make you sign anything!””

“Then why did your father-in-law's family appear in the trust documents before we even met?””

Brianna had no answer.

Denise quietly approached the table.

“Mrs. Carter, I need to let you know that the venue's payment provider has confirmed the disputed refund remains on hold. No funds have been released.””

Evelyn nodded.

“Thank you.””

Denise hesitated.

“There is another matter. The person who originally submitted the refund instructions has requested a change to the destination account.””

David looked up sharply.

“Who submitted the request?””

“Brianna Carter.””

Brianna shook her head.

“I didn't do that!””

Denise turned the tablet toward her.

“The request was submitted four minutes ago.””

Marcus looked at Brianna.

“You were sitting right here.””

“I didn't touch my phone!””

Evelyn glanced at the screen.

The request included a new destination account, but the account holder's name was hidden pending verification.

David immediately contacted the payment provider through the secure portal. After a short exchange, he looked up.

“The request came from a previously authorized device.””

Brianna's face tightened.

“Someone has my login.””

“Who?”” Marcus asked.

“I don't know!””

David examined the access record.

“The device is registered under an email address ending in the letters R and R.””

Marcus frowned.

“Reed Holdings?””

“Possibly. The provider hasn't confirmed the full address.””

Evelyn felt the pieces moving together in a way she couldn't yet understand.

Richard Reed had contacted Brianna about the trust.

He had lent her money.

He had warned them about the person who sent the recording.

And now someone was trying to redirect the refund while Brianna sat in front of them.

“Can you stop the request?”” Evelyn asked.

“The provider has paused it for review,” David replied.

“But we need to secure the account and establish who authorized the change.””

Marcus took out his phone again.

He called his father.

This time, Richard answered immediately.

“Marcus, have you found the letter?””

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

“You knew about the letter?””

Richard went silent.

“You knew about Grandma's missing money. You knew about Andrew Carter. You knew Brianna was looking for the trust.””

“Son, listen to me.””

“No. You listen. Someone is trying to redirect the wedding refund right now using an authorized device connected to your company.””

Richard's voice sharpened.

“Do not let them complete that transfer.””

“Who is trying to complete it?””

“I'll explain everything in person.””

“Where are you?””

“I'm at the venue.””

Marcus turned toward the reception lawn.

Across the bright outdoor space, a Black man in an expensive navy suit had just stepped through the entrance.

Richard Reed.

He carried a leather document case.

And he wasn't alone.

Beside him walked a woman Evelyn recognized immediately from the framed photograph on Andrew's study shelf.

A younger version of the same woman appeared in the old account records.

Marcus's grandmother, Loretta Reed, had died decades earlier.

But the woman walking beside Richard was alive.

Evelyn stared at her.

Marcus whispered, “That's impossible.””

Richard stopped beneath the white floral arch.

The woman beside him looked directly at Evelyn.

Then she said, “Andrew was right. You were never supposed to find out this way.””

Brianna stumbled backward.

Because the woman standing beside Richard Reed was not Loretta.

May you like

It was someone who had been listed as a beneficiary of the original trust.

*Andrew Carter's first wife.*
