Chapter 5: The Groom Who Knew Too Much

Marcus stared at the letter as if it had been written in a language he couldn't understand.

“Why is my name on that?””

Nobody answered him.

The reception lawn remained bright and beautiful around them. White roses climbed the arch behind Brianna. Sunlight glinted off the silverware, and the parked black car reflected the blue sky in its polished windows.

Everything looked perfect.

Nothing felt real.

David enlarged the scanned document.

“The letter is addressed to a Marcus Reed,” he said.

“It doesn't establish that it's you. The name alone isn't enough to identify the recipient.””

“Let me see it.””

David handed him the phone.

Marcus read the first lines silently.

Then his fingers tightened around the device.

“What is this?””

Evelyn stepped closer.

“Read it aloud.””

Marcus looked up.

“Mrs. Carter, I don't think—”

“Please.””

He glanced at Brianna, then back at the letter.

“‘If my daughter ever becomes involved with the young man named Marcus Reed, I want the trustee to investigate the circumstances before authorizing any distribution.’”

Brianna made a small, wounded sound.

Marcus continued.

“‘I have reason to believe the Reed family may possess information about a financial arrangement connected to my business. Until that information is verified, no beneficiary should be permitted to alter the trust or direct its assets.’”

He stopped reading.

His expression had become unreadable.

Evelyn looked at him.

“Did you know my husband?””

“No.””

“Had you ever met him?””

“Not that I remember.””

Brianna shook her head.

“He's lying.””

Marcus turned toward her.

“Excuse me?””

“You told me you never knew anything about Dad. But you knew something about the trust.””

“I told you what you told me!””

“You asked me about my father's business records before we got engaged.””

Marcus's jaw tightened.

“Because you said you were trying to settle his estate.””

“You asked me whether he'd ever worked with a company called Reed Holdings.””

David looked up sharply.

“Reed Holdings?””

Marcus went silent.

Evelyn noticed the change immediately.

“Marcus?””

He handed David the phone.

“My grandfather started a company called Reed Holdings. My father took it over. I work in a different division now.””

David studied the letter.

“Do you know whether your family had any financial dealings with Andrew Carter?””

“No.””

“Are you certain?””

Marcus's eyes flashed.

“Yes. I've never heard his name before today.””

Brianna gave a bitter laugh.

“You expect everyone to believe that?””

Marcus turned on her.

“I expect you to stop using my name to distract people from what you've done.””

Her mouth fell open.

He pointed toward the document.

“If my family was involved in something your father was investigating, I want to know. But I won't accept the idea that I somehow planned a conspiracy with a dead man I never met.””

Evelyn watched him closely.

Something about his reaction seemed sincere. His confusion wasn't polished or carefully performed. He looked like a man discovering that the woman he loved had placed him inside a story he had never agreed to enter.

Still, the letter raised a question nobody could answer.

Why had Andrew specifically mentioned a man named Marcus Reed?

David scrolled down the scanned page.

“There's a reference number here. It looks like an old corporate file identifier.””

Marcus leaned closer.

“That's not a current number.””

“How do you know?””

“Because my grandfather's company changed its records system fifteen years ago. Those older files were archived.””

“Could they still exist?””

“Somewhere, yes.””

“Could you access them?””

Marcus looked at him sharply.

“Not without authorization.””

Brianna seized the opening.

“Then you can help us find out what's going on.””

Marcus stared at her.

“Us?””

“You and me. We can investigate it together.””

“You want me to investigate a financial mystery involving your dead father, a secret account, my family business, and the money you tried to redirect without telling me?””

“I want you to trust me.””

He gave a slow shake of his head.

“You keep asking for trust when you haven't given me a single honest answer.””

Brianna's shoulders sagged.

For a moment, she looked less like an angry bride and more like the frightened teenager Evelyn remembered from the night Andrew was hospitalized.

But then Brianna looked at Evelyn's phone, and the fear returned.

“Mom, please. You can stop this.””

Evelyn didn't move.

“How?””

“Tell the payment provider the account information was a misunderstanding. Tell them you approve the refund.””

“I don't approve it.””

“You know I wasn't trying to hurt you!””

“You used my financial information.””

“I borrowed money!””

“You attempted to direct my refund into an account I never authorized.””

“I was going to pay you back!””

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

“You keep telling me what you intended to do. You never tell me why you believed you had the right.””

Brianna looked away.

Denise approached with her tablet.

“I've contacted the payment provider. They've confirmed that the refund is on hold pending verification. The venue will not release funds to the disputed destination account.””

“Then what happens to the wedding?”” Brianna demanded.

“That depends on the contractual arrangements and the remaining payments. I can discuss those with Mrs. Carter privately.””

“No! This is my wedding!””

Denise kept her voice level.

“And Mrs. Carter is the person who made the disputed payment.””

Brianna slammed her bouquet onto the table.

White petals scattered across the linen.

“You're all treating me like a criminal!””

Marcus looked at her.

“Nobody needed to treat you like anything. You could have told the truth.””

“I was scared!””

“Of what?””

Brianna's mouth opened, then closed.

David's phone vibrated again.

He glanced at the screen and frowned.

“That's unusual.””

“What now?”” Marcus asked.

“Someone has accessed the old document archive.””

Marcus straightened.

“How would you know?””

“The email account that sent me the photograph is linked to an archive notification service. It just received an access alert.””

“From where?””

David read the details.

“The request came from a device associated with Reed Holdings.””

Marcus's expression hardened.

“That's impossible. My family has strict access controls.””

“Could someone else have logged in?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Marcus hesitated.

“My father. A few senior executives. The legal department.””

Evelyn felt a chill despite the sunshine.

“Could your father have known Andrew?””

“I don't know.””

“Could he have known about the trust?””

“I don't know that either.””

Brianna stepped forward.

“Call him.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because he can explain everything.””

“Since when do you know my father?””

Brianna froze.

Marcus took a step toward her.

“Brianna, have you met my father?””

“No.””

“Have you spoken to him?””

She stared at the grass.

“Answer me.””

“Once.””

The word seemed to empty the air from the space between them.

Marcus's face changed.

“When?””

“Before we got engaged.””

“Why?””

Brianna wiped her cheeks.

“He contacted me.””

“What did he want?””

“He asked about my father's estate.””

Marcus looked as if he'd been struck.

“You met my father without telling me?””

“He said it was business.””

“What business?””

“He wanted to know whether I'd found the trust.””

Evelyn gripped the chair again.

“Did he offer you money?””

Brianna didn't answer.

“Brianna.””

“He offered to help me.””

“Help you how?””

She lowered her voice.

“He said that if I could establish my claim to the trust, he could arrange a settlement.””

David's expression sharpened.

“What kind of settlement?””

“Enough to clear my debts.””

Marcus stared at her.

“You were negotiating with my father about your inheritance before we were engaged?””

“I didn't know he was your father when I first spoke to him.””

“Then you found out.””

“Yes.””

“And you still agreed to marry me.””

Brianna's tears spilled over.

“I fell in love with you!””

Marcus looked down at his wedding ring.

“Maybe you did. But you also knew I was connected to the one family your father specifically mentioned in his letter.””

“I didn't know what that meant!””

“Did you tell my father we were getting married?””

Brianna whispered something.

“What?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Two months ago.””

Marcus stepped away from her.

David looked at the letter again.

“There's a paragraph at the bottom we haven't read.””

He zoomed in.

The scanned text was faint, but the final sentence was clear.

If Marcus Reed enters into a marriage with my daughter, the trustee must immediately contact Evelyn Carter and disclose the sealed instructions.

Evelyn felt her knees weaken.

“Sealed instructions?””

David nodded.

“It appears Andrew left something with the trustee that was not included in the ordinary estate records.””

Marcus looked at Brianna.

“Did you know about those instructions?””

She shook her head.

“Then why did your father warn someone about our marriage eleven years before we met?””

Brianna stared at the document.

“I don't know.””

For once, she sounded as if she meant it.

David scrolled to the bottom of the file.

There was a final notation beside the trustee's contact information.

*EMERGENCY DISCLOSURE CONTACT: EVELYN CARTER.*

Beside it was a phone number.

Evelyn recognized the area code, but not the number.

David called.

The call connected after two rings.

A man's voice answered.

“Carter trust administration.””

David introduced himself and explained that a disputed transaction had revealed a sealed instruction associated with Andrew Carter.

The man on the other end went quiet.

Then he asked a single question.

“Is Evelyn Carter present?””

Evelyn took the phone.

“This is Evelyn.””

The man drew a breath.

“Mrs. Carter, we've been trying to reach you for eleven years.””

Her fingers tightened around the phone.

“Why?””

“Because your husband left instructions that could only be activated by one specific event.””

“What event?””

The man paused.

“Your daughter's marriage to Marcus Reed.””

Evelyn looked at Marcus.

He stood motionless beside the scattered rose petals.

“Tell me what my husband left,” she whispered.

May you like

The man's answer made Brianna sink into the nearest chair.

“A sealed video recording, Mrs. Carter. And according to the instructions, it must be played in front of both you and Mr. Reed.””
