Chapter 11: The Daughter Nobody Spoke About

I read the birth certificate again.

Then I looked at my mother.

“Why is your name on this document?””

Margaret sat down on the wooden desk.

Her face had become almost colorless.

“I was nineteen.””

Naomi closed the folder she had been examining.

“Mrs. Hale, are you saying Sophia is your daughter?””

Margaret nodded.

I felt the room closing around me.

“Your daughter?””

She began crying.

“Yes.””

The answer was barely audible.

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

The woman I had intended to marry was my mother's daughter.

My half-sister.

And the man who had arranged my accident was her brother.

I looked at the birth certificate again.

The dates made sense. Sophia was several years older than I was.

“Who is her father?”” I asked.

Margaret didn't answer.

“Mom. Who?””

“Richard Vale.””

Naomi looked up.

“Marcus's father?””

Margaret nodded.

The room fell silent.

My father's greatest business rival had fathered the woman who later became my fiancée.

And my mother had kept that secret for decades.

I pushed the birth certificate away.

“Did my father know?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Before Sophia was born.””

“Then why did he stay with you?””

Margaret wiped her tears.

“He wanted to raise the child. He said she wasn't responsible for the mistakes adults made.””

I stared at her.

“Was she ever part of our family?””

“Not publicly. Richard Vale refused to acknowledge her. Your father paid for her education and helped arrange for her to live with another family for a while.””

“Another family?””

Margaret nodded.

“He believed it was safer if nobody connected her to him. When Richard died, Marcus took control of his family's business interests. He discovered Sophia's identity and approached her.””

“What did Marcus want?””

“He told her that your father had stolen money from their family. He convinced her that she deserved what belonged to them.””

I laughed bitterly.

“So she came into my life to get revenge?””

“I don't know when it started, Ethan. I swear.””

I pointed at the video camera.

“She knew exactly who she was when she entered my father's office. She knew Marcus was involved. She knew she was using me.””

Margaret lowered her head.

“I know.””

Naomi stepped closer.

“Mrs. Hale, did your husband establish any legal arrangement for Sophia?””

Margaret hesitated.

“He created an education and support fund. But he never transferred company shares to her.””

Naomi opened the leather-bound diary.

“Perhaps there's an explanation here.””

She turned several pages.

My father's handwriting appeared repeatedly.

There were references to Marcus, Sophia, and several suspicious company transfers.

Then Naomi stopped.

“Ethan, look at this.””

A paragraph had been underlined.

*Sophia is not the enemy yet. Marcus has convinced her that the truth about her birth means she was abandoned. I have tried to explain that Margaret and I wanted her safe. But she only sees the money.*

Below it was another sentence.

*If anything happens to me, Ethan must never be allowed to sign a document presented by Marcus without independent verification.*

I stared at the words.

My father had anticipated exactly what Marcus would attempt.

But he hadn't anticipated how far the betrayal would go.

We spent the next hour examining the remaining boxes.

Naomi found original bank statements showing suspicious transfers from Hale Meridian dating back eleven years.

There were also copies of contracts between Richard Vale's old companies and shell corporations connected to Marcus.

Some payments had been approved by my father's office.

Others carried forged signatures.

The final folder contained a list of names.

At the top was Daniel Voss.

Below it was Claire Bennett.

And beside Sophia's name, my father had written:

*Potential beneficiary. Do not trust without verification.*

I looked at the list.

“Why is Daniel named here?””

Naomi examined the attached document.

“Your father may have been preparing an investigation into the company's internal financial network.””

“Then Daniel wasn't randomly selected as successor trustee.””

“No. It appears your father deliberately chose someone who understood the financial structure.””

My phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered immediately.

“Where are you?””

“Somewhere I can talk.””

“Did you know Sophia was Margaret's daughter?””

Silence.

Then Daniel said, “Yes.””

I stared at the phone.

“You knew?””

“Not everything. But I found an old birth record during my investigation.””

“And you didn't tell me?””

“I was trying to confirm it.””

“Daniel, that woman was engaged to me!””

“I know.””

“She was sleeping beside me while helping Marcus steal my company!””

“I know, Ethan.””

His voice cracked.

“I'm sorry.””

I closed my eyes.

“Why did my father choose you as successor?””

“Because I found the original financial transfers. I was one of the few people who understood what Richard Vale had been trying to accomplish.””

“What was he trying to accomplish?””

Daniel took a breath.

“Richard wanted control of Hale Meridian before your father died. He believed your father had concealed ownership of several technology patents that belonged to the Vale family.””

“That makes no sense.””

“Your father developed those patents. But the original funding came from a joint investment agreement. The agreement was manipulated.””

Naomi immediately took the phone.

“Daniel, do you have the original agreement?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

“In a private archive. But there is a problem.””

“What problem?””

“Marcus knows about it.””

A brief pause followed.

Then Daniel said, “Ethan, Sophia contacted me this morning.””

I looked at Naomi.

“What did she want?””

“She offered to give me the original agreement if I handed over the trust records.””

Naomi shook her head.

“It's a trap.””

“I know.””

“Did you accept?””

“No.””

I leaned forward.

“Daniel, do not meet her.””

“I wasn't planning to.””

“Good.””

Then he said something that changed the conversation.

“She told me Margaret was the one who signed the original transfer agreement.””

I looked toward my mother.

“Did you sign anything?””

Margaret shook her head.

“Not that I remember.””

Daniel continued.

“Ethan, the document has your father's signature, your mother's signature, and a third witness.””

“Who?””

“Dr. William Foster.””

Naomi immediately took out her notebook.

“The doctor?””

“Yes. He wasn't just involved in your medical records. He witnessed the original business transfer eleven years ago.””

My stomach tightened.

Everything seemed connected.

My father's death.

The company transfers.

The medical authorization.

Sophia's medication.

Dr. Foster.

Marcus.

One network stretching back more than a decade.

Then Daniel added, “I have another reason to believe Sophia isn't working entirely for Marcus.””

“What do you mean?””

“I checked her private account.””

Naomi interrupted.

“Legally obtained records?””

“Yes. They came from a document she voluntarily submitted during an earlier dispute.””

He paused.

“She has been transferring money into a separate account every month.””

“How much?””

“Between ten and twenty thousand dollars.””

“Where is it going?””

Daniel answered slowly.

“To someone named Ethan Hale.””

My blood ran cold.

I looked at Naomi.

“That can't be right.””

Daniel continued.

“It's not your account. It's a trust account registered under your name, but the beneficiary details are hidden.””

“What is the purpose?””

“I don't know. But the oldest transaction dates back eleven years.””

To the month my father died.

I looked at the birth certificate on the desk.

Then at my mother's face.

“Mom, did my father ever create a private inheritance account for me?””

Margaret began shaking.

“Yes.””

Naomi turned sharply.

“Why wasn't that disclosed?””

Margaret looked at me.

“Because he told me it wasn't supposed to be opened until you turned thirty-five.””

I frowned.

“My thirty-fifth birthday was last month.””

Nobody moved.

I had inherited Hale Meridian years ago, but apparently there was another inheritance waiting for me.

Naomi immediately searched the trust documents.

A moment later, she found the reference.

The account existed.

But the beneficiary authorization had been changed.

The new trustee was listed as Sophia Reed.

I felt cold all over.

“She controls my inheritance?””

Naomi shook her head.

“Not necessarily. There may be grounds to challenge the appointment.””

I stared at the date.

The transfer had been made two days before my accident.

Again.

The same pattern.

The same timing.

Then my phone received a message.

Unknown sender.

*Sophia wants to meet. She says she can explain the inheritance and the accident.*

A second message appeared.

*Come to the Riverside Hotel tonight. Alone.*

I looked at Naomi.

“She wants to talk.””

Naomi immediately shook her head.

“Absolutely not.””

“She may know what happened to my father.””

“Then she can speak through legal counsel.””

I read the message again.

A third notification arrived.

This time, there was an attachment.

An audio recording.

I pressed play.

Sophia's voice filled the room.

“Ethan, if you're hearing this, Marcus has already made his move. I know you think I destroyed your life. But there's something I need you to understand.””

She paused.

Then she said:

“Your father didn't die trying to save the company. He died trying to save me.””

The recording ended.

I looked at Margaret.

She was crying again.

May you like

Naomi stood perfectly still.

And I realized that the secret behind my father's death was still bigger than the secret behind my engagement.
