Chapter 8: The Prescription That Changed Everything

The emergency board meeting was suspended for forty-eight hours.

Marcus left first.

Sophia followed him, refusing to look in my direction.

Dr. Foster hurried out through a side corridor while Naomi instructed the company's legal department to preserve every relevant financial record.

But Eleanor remained behind.

She closed the conference room doors and approached my wheelchair.

“Ethan, I need to show you something.””

Naomi turned toward her.

“What is it?””

Eleanor hesitated.

“It's about the payments Marcus made before the accident.””

She placed a tablet on the table.

“I started reviewing the executive accounts after the first Northstar transfer appeared. I found a second company receiving regular payments.””

“What company?””

“Meridian Medical Consulting.””

Naomi frowned.

“Is that a medical supplier?””

“That's how it's registered.””

Eleanor opened the financial record.

The company had received fourteen payments over six months.

Each payment was between fifteen and forty thousand dollars.

The listed service was medical equipment procurement.

“Who owns it?”” I asked.

“That's the strange part. The registered director is a woman named Claire Bennett.””

I had never heard of her.

Eleanor opened another file.

“Claire is Sophia's older sister.””

I stared at the screen.

“Does Sophia have a sister?””

“Apparently.””

Naomi leaned forward.

“Do we have proof the company supplied medical equipment?””

“That's what I wanted to know. The warehouse addresses don't exist. The invoices list products that were never delivered.””

“What happened to the money?””

Eleanor opened the transfer history.

Almost every payment had been moved within twenty-four hours.

The final recipient was a private account overseas.

I looked at Naomi.

“Find the account owner.””

She nodded.

Then Eleanor lowered her voice.

“There's one more thing. I found a payment made to a laboratory.””

I looked at her.

“What laboratory?””

“Dr. Harrison's Independent Diagnostics.””

My heart jumped.

“The same doctor Maya's mother contacted?””

“Yes.””

Naomi leaned closer.

“Was Dr. Harrison paid by Marcus?””

“No. The payment came from Meridian Medical Consulting.””

The room became silent.

It was possible someone had hired an independent laboratory to investigate my medication before the accident.

Or someone had paid the laboratory for another reason.

“Contact Dr. Harrison,” I said.

Naomi nodded.

But before she could dial, her phone rang.

An investigator.

She answered.

“Yes?””

Her expression changed.

“Where?””

She listened, then slowly sat down.

“Are you certain?””

She ended the call.

“What happened?”” I asked.

“Elena has been located.””

Maya, who had been waiting outside the conference room with Peter, rushed inside when she heard her mother's name.

“Where is she?””

Naomi crouched beside her.

“She's safe, sweetheart. She's at a clinic on the other side of the city.””

Maya began crying with relief.

“Can we see her?””

Naomi looked at me.

I nodded.

The clinic was a small private facility above a pharmacy.

Dr. Harrison met us at the entrance.

He was in his early sixties, with silver hair and a pair of round glasses. His expression was serious.

“Mr. Hale,” he said, shaking my hand.

“I've been expecting you.””

“Where's Elena?””

“Inside. She's been frightened, but she's physically safe.””

Maya ran ahead.

“Mom!””

A woman sitting on the examination bed turned toward the door.

Her face was pale, and a bruise marked her forehead.

“Maya!””

The girl threw herself into her mother's arms.

Elena held her tightly, crying into her hair.

“I told you to stay away from the estate.””

Maya shook her head.

“I had to tell him.””

Elena looked at me.

“Thank you for believing her.””

I nodded.

“You called me before someone interrupted you.””

Her expression became grave.

“I know. I was trying to tell you about the medication.””

Naomi pulled out a chair.

“Let's start at the beginning.””

Elena explained that she had discovered an envelope in Sophia's bedroom containing several pharmacy labels and loose tablets.

At first, she had assumed it was a mistake.

Then she noticed that the prescription numbers didn't match the medications listed in the household medical records.

She contacted Dr. Harrison.

He agreed to analyze the samples independently.

“What did you find?”” I asked.

Dr. Harrison opened a folder.

“The tablets supplied under your name did not match the medication listed on your original discharge prescription.””

He placed two laboratory reports in front of me.

“One contained a sedating compound that can cause drowsiness, impaired coordination, and reduced alertness. The second sample contained a different combination.””

Naomi studied the report.

“Could either have affected his rehabilitation?””

“Yes. Depending on the dosage and interactions with other prescribed drugs, they could have made physical therapy significantly more difficult. However, we need your complete medical history before determining the full effects.””

I stared at him.

“Was it prescribed to me?””

“The laboratory could find no legitimate prescription matching the contents of the samples under your treatment records.””

Elena reached inside her handbag.

She removed a small envelope.

“This is what I found in Sophia's drawer.””

Inside were three printed instructions.

The first contained my name.

The second contained a schedule of medication changes.

The third was a handwritten note.

*Keep him sleepy in the mornings. No unnecessary appointments. No outside specialists.*

I read it again.

The handwriting looked familiar.

Naomi placed the note in an evidence sleeve.

“Did you take these before you left the estate?””

“Yes.””

“Did anyone see you?””

Elena looked down.

“Mr. Collins saw me leaving Sophia's room. He asked what I was doing. I told him I was looking for cleaning supplies.””

“What happened after that?””

“Sophia called me into her office. She accused me of stealing.””

Elena's voice began shaking.

“She showed me photographs of Maya leaving the study. Then she told me she could have us arrested for trespassing and theft.””

Maya held her mother's hand.

“I didn't steal anything.””

“I know, sweetheart.””

Elena continued.

“She offered me money to keep quiet. When I refused, she told me I would never work in this city again.””

I felt my hands curl into fists.

“Did she threaten you physically?””

Elena nodded.

“Not directly. But the next day, two men followed me home. One of them broke into my apartment.””

Naomi exchanged a glance with Peter.

“Did you see their faces?””

“No.””

Dr. Harrison placed another file on the table.

“There is something else, Mr. Hale. Elena asked me to compare the medication samples with the prescription changes submitted electronically.””

He turned the file toward us.

“Several of the changes were made through a physician account that should not have had authority to alter your treatment.””

“Dr. Foster?””

He nodded.

“But the electronic approval records show that the changes were requested through another account first.””

Naomi frowned.

“Whose?””

Dr. Harrison pointed to the document.

*Claire Bennett — Meridian Medical Consulting.*

Sophia's sister.

The person receiving company money through the fake medical supplier.

My chest tightened.

“Can you prove Sophia knew what was in those pills?””

Elena reached into her bag again.

This time, she removed a small voice recorder.

“I didn't just find the medication,” she said.

“I recorded one of Sophia's conversations.””

Naomi became very still.

“When?””

“The night before I left the estate.””

She pressed play.

Static filled the small room.

Then Sophia's voice emerged.

“Claire, I don't care what the original prescription says. He needs to stay on the new schedule.””

A second woman's voice answered.

“What happens when he starts improving?””

Sophia laughed softly.

“He won't. Not while we're handling the treatment.””

I felt sick.

Then the recording continued.

Claire asked, “And what about the company? Marcus says the board is getting impatient.””

Sophia replied:

“Once Ethan is declared incapable, Marcus gets control. I get my share. Then we can stop pretending this engagement is about love.””

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Maya looked at me.

“Does that mean she doesn't love you?””

I looked down at the floor.

“No, sweetheart.””

My voice came out weaker than I intended.

“It means she lied.””

Naomi took the recorder.

“This is important evidence. We'll preserve the original and have it independently authenticated.””

Elena reached for my hand.

“There's another reason I kept it.””

“What reason?””

She swallowed.

“Because Sophia said something about your father.””

I looked up.

“What did she say?””

Elena closed her eyes.

“She told Claire that Marcus was making the same mistake his father made eleven years ago.””

My stomach tightened.

“My father never worked with Marcus's father.””

“That isn't what Sophia said.””

Elena looked directly at me.

“She said your father's death had been the beginning of everything.””

Naomi immediately opened her laptop.

“Ethan, I think we need to investigate the original ownership of Meridian Medical Consulting.””

But I was already thinking about my mother's envelope.

The one containing the photograph of my father and Marcus.

I took it out and examined the back.

There was a handwritten number.

*0315-1987.*

I recognized it immediately.

It was the combination to my father's old office safe.

A safe that had remained locked since the year he died.

I turned to Naomi.

“Take me to my father's office.””

She looked at the clock.

“Now?””

“Yes.””

I wanted to know what my father had been hiding.

And I had a terrible feeling that whatever was inside that safe would explain why someone had been so determined to keep me in a wheelchair.

Forty minutes later, Peter unlocked the old office in my family's former mansion.

Dust covered the bookshelves.

The leather chair behind the desk had remained untouched for eleven years.

My father's photograph still stood beside the window.

I looked at it for a moment.

Then I rolled toward the wall behind the bookshelf.

“There,” I said.

Peter helped Naomi move the heavy cabinet.

A steel safe was embedded in the wall.

Naomi entered the combination.

03151987.

The lock clicked.

Inside were property deeds, financial statements, old photographs, and a brown leather notebook.

At the bottom lay a small cassette recorder.

There was a label on it.

*For Ethan. Only if Marcus returns.*

My hands began shaking.

Naomi found a battery compartment and checked the device.

“It still works.””

She pressed play.

A few seconds of static followed.

Then my father's voice filled the room.

“Ethan, if you're listening to this, something has happened to me.””

I closed my eyes.

His voice sounded exactly as I remembered.

He continued.

“There's something you must understand about Marcus. He didn't steal the company alone. The person who helped him is someone you've known your entire life.””

The recording crackled.

Then my father said a name.

“Margaret.””

My mother.

I froze.

But before the recording could continue, another sound emerged.

A woman's voice.

One I recognized immediately.

It was Sophia.

May you like

And she was speaking to my father.

“Mr. Hale, you promised me that no one would ever find out who I really was.””
