Chapter 14: The Last Board Meeting

At 7:05 the following morning, Naomi received confirmation that investigators had secured the original video footage.

By 8:00, Dr. Foster's medical records had been subpoenaed.

By 8:30, Marcus Vale's private financial accounts were under investigation.

But Marcus wasn't waiting for the authorities.

At 9:00, he convened an emergency board meeting at Hale Meridian.

His objective was simple.

Declare me medically incapable, transfer control of the voting shares, and complete the takeover before anyone could challenge the fraudulent documents.

Naomi placed a folder on my lap.

“Are you prepared?””

I looked at the photographs inside.

The garage footage.

The payment records.

The medical authorization forms.

The trust documents.

My father's final letter.

“I've been preparing for this since the day I woke up in that hospital.””

She nodded.

“Then let's finish it.””

The boardroom was already full when we arrived.

Marcus stood beside the presentation screen.

He wore a dark suit and the same silver watch I had given him when Hale Meridian reached its first billion-dollar valuation.

Sophia sat two seats away.

Dr. Foster was there too.

I noticed him immediately.

He looked uncomfortable.

Marcus smiled when he saw me.

“Ethan. I really wish you hadn't come.””

I rolled toward the table.

“That's unfortunate. I really wish you hadn't tried to steal my company.””

Several directors exchanged nervous looks.

Marcus lifted his hands.

“Let's remain professional.””

Naomi placed a document in front of the board chair.

“We have new evidence concerning the proposed transfer of voting authority, including suspected document falsification and medical interference.””

Marcus laughed.

“More accusations?””

“Not accusations,” Naomi replied.

“Evidence.””

He pointed toward Dr. Foster.

“Doctor, would you please explain Mr. Hale's condition?””

Dr. Foster stood.

“Mr. Hale continues to demonstrate significant physical impairment. Given the duration of his condition, I would not recommend that he resume executive responsibilities.””

Naomi opened her folder.

“Doctor, how many times have you examined Mr. Hale independently during the last six months?””

Dr. Foster adjusted his tie.

“I have reviewed his records.””

“How many physical examinations?””

He hesitated.

“I don't recall the exact number.””

“Was it more than one?””

Dr. Foster remained silent.

Naomi placed a document on the table.

“Are you aware that your prescription authorization account was used to approve medications that did not match Mr. Hale's original treatment plan?””

“I was not responsible for dispensing medication.””

“Did you authorize the changes?””

“I would have to review the records.””

“Did you receive payments from Meridian Medical Consulting?””

Dr. Foster looked toward Marcus.

Marcus immediately interrupted.

“This is an inappropriate interrogation.””

Naomi ignored him.

“We have bank transfers totaling $180,000. The payments began shortly before Mr. Hale's accident and continued throughout his rehabilitation.””

The room erupted in whispers.

Eleanor Brooks stood.

“Marcus, did you know about these payments?””

He slammed his folder shut.

“This meeting is about company leadership, not personal medical allegations.””

Eleanor shook her head.

“You've spent six months telling us Ethan cannot participate in company decisions. Now we discover that you personally funded the doctor making those claims?””

Marcus pointed at her.

“Sit down.””

“No.””

Her voice was firm.

“You have used company money without authorization. You have hidden financial records. And now you're asking us to sign a resolution based on a medical assessment you helped purchase.””

Marcus stared at her.

“You're making a mistake.””

“Perhaps. But I won't make it on your instructions.””

Naomi placed another document before the board chair.

“This establishes that Margaret Hale remains the legitimate trustee of the family trust holding fifty-one percent of the voting shares. The attempted appointment of Marcus Vale was made using an unauthorized electronic signature.””

Marcus's face changed.

“That document was legally filed.””

“It was fraudulently filed.””

“You can't prove that.””

A voice came from the doorway.

“I can.””

Daniel Voss walked into the room.

He carried a black folder and a sealed evidence case.

Marcus went completely still.

Daniel approached the table.

“Mr. Vale, do you remember authorizing Northstar Risk Solutions to access Ethan's vehicle?””

Marcus didn't answer.

Daniel placed a bank statement beside the medical records.

“I have the original payment instructions, the contract, and the account records showing where the funds went.””

Naomi nodded toward the screen.

Peter played the garage footage.

The video showed Marcus meeting Leonard Briggs.

Then another image appeared.

Sophia entering the garage with the silver bracelet.

Finally, the footage showed Dr. Foster approaching the vehicle and disabling the emergency braking system.

The entire board watched in silence.

Marcus stood abruptly.

“That's been edited.””

Daniel shook his head.

“The original recording is preserved with a forensic examiner. The metadata matches the garage security server.””

Dr. Foster began gathering his belongings.

Peter stepped in front of him.

“Please remain seated.””

Marcus turned toward Sophia.

“You said the footage was gone.””

Sophia didn't move.

Then she slowly stood.

“I never said that.””

Marcus's face twisted.

“You ungrateful little—”

“Don't,” she interrupted.

For the first time, Sophia looked directly at him without fear.

“You told me Ethan would only be frightened. You said his car would stop safely. You said nobody would get hurt.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“You knew exactly what we were doing.””

“I knew about the money. I didn't know you had disabled the emergency system.””

“You were there.””

“I was there because you asked me to track him!””

Marcus moved toward her.

Peter immediately blocked his path.

Naomi turned toward the board.

“We also have a recorded conversation in which Ms. Reed acknowledges administering medication outside Mr. Hale's prescribed treatment plan. She has agreed to provide further evidence.””

Sophia lowered her eyes.

“I'll tell them everything.””

I looked at her.

“Why now?””

Her eyes filled.

“Because I finally understand what Marcus intended to do. He wasn't going to let me have anything. He was going to blame everything on me.””

I shook my head.

“You still made your choices.””

“I know.””

I turned away.

She had no more excuses to offer that could change what she had done.

Marcus suddenly laughed.

“You think you've won?””

Naomi closed her folder.

“I think the evidence speaks for itself.””

He pointed at me.

“You have no idea what your father was hiding. You don't know where the money came from. You don't even know who really owns the patents.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Actually, I do.””

He opened the final section of his folder.

“The original patent agreements were never transferred to Richard Vale's company. Your father retained ownership through the family trust. Marcus has been claiming rights he never legally acquired.””

Eleanor looked at the documents.

“So the company wasn't at risk?””

“Not legally,” Naomi replied.

“Not unless someone completed the fraudulent transfer.””

I looked at Marcus.

“All those years. All that money. All those lies.””

He glared at me.

“You think your father was innocent? He made deals with people. He knew what was happening.””

Daniel placed a final document on the table.

“Your father documented everything. Including the unauthorized transfers Richard Vale attempted to make before his death.””

Marcus's face finally collapsed.

The conference room doors opened.

Two investigators entered with formal notices.

Dr. Foster was asked to accompany them for questioning regarding suspected medical fraud, evidence tampering, and his role in the vehicle investigation.

Marcus was escorted out shortly afterward.

Before he reached the doorway, he turned toward me.

“You'll never be the man you were before, Ethan.””

I looked at him.

“Maybe not.””

Then I glanced down at my legs.

“But unlike you, Marcus, I don't need to destroy other people to prove I'm still standing.””

He said nothing.

The door closed behind him.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then Eleanor began clapping.

Slowly, the sound spread around the table.

I hadn't come there for applause.

But for the first time since the accident, people were looking at me as though I belonged in the room.

Naomi leaned toward me.

“There's one final matter.””

“What?””

“Your father placed a condition in the original trust. If the wrongful transfer attempt was exposed, the successor trustee had authority to release the final inheritance documents.””

Daniel smiled faintly.

“We found them yesterday.””

I looked at him.

“What's in them?””

He handed me a sealed envelope.

My name was written across the front in my father's handwriting.

I opened it.

Inside was a single page.

*To my son, Ethan.*

*You were never meant to inherit only the company. You were meant to inherit the truth.*

Below it was a schedule of assets.

Properties.

Investments.

Patent rights.

And one final entry.

*The Ethan Hale Recovery Trust — $12,000,000.*

I stared at the amount.

“What is this?””

Naomi smiled.

“Your father established it specifically for your long-term medical care and rehabilitation. It was never meant to be controlled by Marcus.””

For the first time that morning, I felt something besides anger.

Hope.

Then my phone rang.

Dr. Patel.

I answered immediately.

“Mr. Hale,” she said, “I've reviewed the complete medication history and the latest imaging.””

I held my breath.

“And?””

“We'd like you to come in tomorrow. There are signs that your neurological function may be better than previous assessments suggested.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“Does that mean I might walk again?””

There was a pause.

“I won't promise you something I can't guarantee. But I believe we have more options than you were led to believe.””

I looked at Naomi.

For six months, I had been told to accept the wheelchair as my permanent future.

Now a doctor was telling me that my future might not be finished.

And that was worth more than twelve million dollars.
