Chapter 5: The Truth Buried With Her
For three years, I had protected a memory.
Not a person.
A memory.
I had built my entire life around the woman I lost.
The way she laughed when Leo spilled juice on her favorite dress.
The way she danced in our kitchen when nobody was watching.
The way she held our son the night he was born and whispered that she would spend her whole life protecting him.
My wife, Amelia Carter.
The woman I loved.
The woman I buried.
And now my own brother was standing in front of me, telling me I never truly knew her.
I wanted to reject it immediately.
I wanted to call him a liar.
I wanted to believe this was just another manipulation.
But the look on Marcus’s face stopped me.
He wasn’t enjoying this.
He wasn’t winning.
He looked like a man carrying a weight he had been afraid to put down for years.
“Take that back,” I said.
My voice was low.
The entire ballroom heard it.
Marcus looked at me.
“Daniel—”
“Take it back.””
He shook his head slowly.
“I can’t.””
The anger inside me rose.
“You don’t get to stand here and rewrite her after she’s gone.””
“I’m not rewriting anything.””
“You’re accusing my wife.””
“I’m telling you the truth.””
I stepped closer.
“Your truth?””
Marcus looked down.
“No.””
He looked at Leo.
“The truth he deserves to know.””
That sentence confused me more than anything.
Leo.
Again.
Everything came back to my son.
Every secret.
Every lie.
Every decision.
“What does Leo have to do with Amelia?””
Marcus didn’t answer immediately.
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
“Daniel, maybe we should leave.””
I turned toward her.
“Why?””
Her face was tense.
“Because this has gone too far.””
I almost smiled.
Too far?
She had watched my son expose years of emotional pain.
She had brought a hidden contract to a public event.
She had involved my brother.
And now that the truth was approaching, she wanted to leave.
“No,” I said.
She froze.
“No?””
“No one leaves.””
I looked at Marcus.
“You started this.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
“Then finish it.””
A long silence followed.
Finally, Marcus pulled out his phone.
“I have something.””
My body immediately tensed.
Another phone.
Another message.
Another secret.
It felt like my entire life had become a series of screens showing me things I was never supposed to see.
Marcus unlocked his phone.
But before he showed me anything, Leo stepped closer.
“Dad.””
I looked down.
He was still holding my hand.
“Is Mom in trouble?””
My heart broke.
Because even after everything, even after being hurt by Vanessa, even after watching adults fight around him, his first concern was his mother.
“No, buddy.””
I knelt beside him.
“Your mom isn’t in trouble.””
“But Uncle Marcus said—”
“I know.””
I looked into his eyes.
“Whatever happened, it’s not your fault.””
He nodded.
But he didn’t look convinced.
Children understand more than adults think.
Sometimes they understand things we wish they didn’t.
Marcus watched us quietly.
Then he spoke.
“Amelia made a mistake.””
I stood.
The word felt wrong.
A mistake.
Everyone makes mistakes.
But people don’t bring documents to hide mistakes.
“What kind of mistake?””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
She immediately shook her head.
“Don’t.””
That one word changed everything.
Because Vanessa wasn’t angry at Marcus.
She was afraid of what he would say.
Marcus noticed it too.
“She deserves to know.””
Vanessa’s voice sharpened.
“Marcus.””
“No.””
He looked at her.
“You’ve controlled this story long enough.””
My eyes moved between them.
“You two have been doing this for years.””
Marcus didn’t deny it.
That hurt.
More than if he had argued.
“Why?””
He looked at me.
“Because after Amelia died, you were broken.””
I swallowed.
“I was.””
“You couldn’t think clearly.””
“I know.””
“And Vanessa knew that.””
My eyes moved toward my wife.
She looked away.
Marcus continued.
“She came to you at exactly the right time.””
The room felt colder.
I remembered.
The timing.
How quickly Vanessa appeared after Amelia’s death.
How everyone told me I needed someone.
How she seemed to understand my pain.
How she was always there.
Maybe too quickly.
“No,” I whispered.
Marcus heard me.
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“Amelia was my wife.””
“I know.””
“She loved me.””
“I know.””
“Then stop talking like she was part of this.””
Marcus took a breath.
“Daniel, Amelia wasn’t the villain.””
I looked at him.
“Then what are you saying?””
He lowered his phone.
“I’m saying someone used her.””
The words made no sense.
“Used her?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Then Marcus said:
“You.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
“What?””
I looked at her.
“You used Amelia?””
She immediately shook her head.
“That’s insane.””
Marcus unlocked his phone.
“I have proof.””
He turned the screen toward me.
It was an email.
From Vanessa.
Before our marriage.
My eyes moved across the first line.
*Vanessa: Amelia is the only thing standing between Daniel and the life I deserve.*
I stopped breathing.
I read it again.
Then again.
No.
That couldn’t be real.
“That’s fake.””
My voice sounded distant.
Marcus shook his head.
“I wish it was.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Daniel, don’t listen to him.””
I looked at her.
“Did you write this?””
Silence.
The kind of silence that destroys people.
“Answer me.””
Her eyes filled with frustration.
“You don’t understand.””
I almost laughed.
“That’s your answer?””
“You don’t know what was happening.””
“What was happening?””
She looked around.
The guests.
The cameras.
The room.
Then she lowered her voice.
“Amelia knew.””
My blood froze.
“Knew what?””
Vanessa looked at Marcus.
Marcus looked away.
And that scared me.
Because suddenly I realized something.
They weren’t fighting over whether the truth existed.
They were fighting over who had the right to tell it.
“Daniel,” Vanessa said slowly.
“You think Amelia was perfect.””
I said nothing.
“But she wasn’t.””
My jaw tightened.
“Careful.””
“She lied to you.””
The room went silent.
Leo squeezed my hand.
I looked at him.
Then back at Vanessa.
“What did she lie about?””
Vanessa took a breath.
And for the first time that night, she looked almost human.
Not powerful.
Not glamorous.
Just angry.
And hurt.
“She had a secret before she died.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“What secret?””
Nobody answered.
Then Marcus spoke.
“Daniel…”
His voice was heavy.
“The reason Amelia fought so hard to protect Leo…”
He paused.
“The reason she changed her will…”
My heart started racing.
“Was because she knew someone would come after him.””
I stared at him.
“What are you saying?””
Marcus looked at Leo.
Then at me.
“I’m saying Amelia wasn’t trying to protect her money.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“She was protecting Leo from his own family.””
The words echoed.
My own family.
My own brother.
My own wife.
My own home.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Why?””
She didn’t answer.
I looked at Marcus.
“Why would Amelia think Leo needed protection?””
Marcus opened his mouth.
But before he could speak, a woman’s voice interrupted.
“Because she found out who Leo’s real father was.””
Everything stopped.
I turned.
A woman stood near the back entrance of the ballroom.
I didn’t recognize her.
But she knew my name.
And she was holding an envelope.
“Daniel Carter,” she said.
Everyone turned toward her.
“I’m sorry you had to find out this way.””
My heart pounded.
“Who are you?””
The woman walked closer.
Her eyes moved to Leo.
Then back to me.
“My name is Rachel.””
She held out the envelope.
“And I have the DNA results Amelia never wanted you to see.””
I couldn’t move.
I couldn’t speak.
Because the one thing I believed I knew for certain…
The one thing that had never been questioned…
Was suddenly standing in front of me as a lie.
Rachel placed the envelope in my hand.
May you like
And whispered:
“Leo isn’t your biological son.””
