Chapter 6: The Son I Chose

The envelope felt heavier than anything I had ever held.

Heavier than the first contract I signed for my company.

Heavier than the hospital paperwork after Amelia’s accident.

Heavier than the letter telling me she was gone.

Because this wasn’t paper.

This was a question.

A question that could destroy the foundation of my entire life.

I stared at the envelope in my hand.

*DNA RESULTS.*

Two words.

Two words that suddenly made everything else feel uncertain.

My eyes moved to Leo.

He was watching me.

Not the envelope.

Me.

And that was the part that hurt the most.

Because he wasn’t afraid of the truth.

He was afraid of losing me.

“Dad?””

His voice was small.

I immediately put the envelope behind my back.

Not because I wanted to hide the truth.

Because I wanted to protect him from watching adults break his world again.

“Hey,” I said softly.

I walked toward him.

“Look at me.””

He did.

“You’re okay.””

His eyes searched mine.

“Am I?””

The question almost broke me.

I crouched down.

“Why would you ask that?””

He looked at the floor.

“Because everyone keeps saying things about me.””

My throat tightened.

“Who?””

He shrugged.

“Everyone.””

I knew what he meant.

The whispers.

The tension.

The way adults changed their voices when they thought children weren’t listening.

I placed my hand on his shoulder.

“Listen to me, Leo.””

He looked up.

“Nothing anyone says tonight changes who you are.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“But what if…”

He stopped.

“What if what?””

He looked at the envelope.

I followed his eyes.

My heart sank.

He understood.

Maybe not everything.

But enough.

“Dad,” he whispered.

“Did Mom lie?””

The question was impossible.

Because Amelia wasn’t here to defend herself.

And I refused to let her memory become a weapon.

“I don’t know.””

It was the hardest sentence I had ever spoken.

Leo nodded slowly.

The honesty hurt him.

But I knew a painful truth was better than a beautiful lie.

Behind me, Vanessa spoke.

“You see?””

I stood.

“What?””

She pointed at the envelope.

“This is what I was trying to tell you.””

I turned toward her.

“No.””

Her eyebrows lifted.

“No?””

“You don’t get to pretend you were protecting me.””

Her expression hardened.

“I was.””

“By hurting my son?””

“By preparing you for reality.””

I stared at her.

“You knew about this.””

She didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“You knew.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“I knew Amelia had secrets.””

“Secrets you used.””

“I used information that affected our family.””

“Our family?””

I looked around.

At the ballroom.

At the people watching.

At the woman standing in front of me.

“You spent years making my son feel unwanted.””

Her face tightened.

“Because I knew there was something wrong.””

“Something wrong?””

“Yes.””

Her voice rose.

“You put him above everything.””

I froze.

“What?””

“You sacrificed your company. Your future. Your reputation.””

She stepped closer.

“Do you know what that feels like?””

I stared at her.

“No.””

Her eyes became colder.

“Exactly.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Marcus stepped between us.

“Vanessa.””

She looked at him.

“What?””

“Stop.””

She laughed bitterly.

“Now you have morals?””

Marcus flinched.

That told me there was more between them.

Something deeper.

Something ugly.

I looked at Marcus.

“What else don’t I know?””

He looked away.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“I’m done hearing half-truths.””

I pointed at the envelope.

“I want everything.””

Marcus nodded.

“You deserve that.””

“Start talking.””

He took a deep breath.

“After Amelia died, she left instructions.””

“Instructions?””

“Yes.””

“For who?””

“For Leo.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“She knew Vanessa would come after the estate.””

Vanessa immediately responded.

“That’s ridiculous.””

Marcus ignored her.

“She created protections.””

“Protections?””

“She changed ownership structures. She moved certain assets.””

My mind raced.

“Why?””

Marcus looked at Leo.

“Because Amelia was afraid.””

“Of what?””

He answered quietly.

“Of losing him.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“My son?””

Marcus nodded.

“She knew people would question everything after she was gone.””

“People like Vanessa?””

Silence.

Vanessa looked away.

That was all I needed.

I opened the envelope.

The room became silent.

I didn’t want to do it there.

Not in front of strangers.

Not in front of my son.

But everyone had already taken pieces of my life.

I needed the truth.

My fingers opened the envelope.

I pulled out the paper.

The first page was simple.

Names.

Dates.

Results.

I searched for the conclusion.

My eyes found the sentence.

*Probability of biological relationship: 0%.*

The world became quiet.

Not silent.

Quiet.

Like my mind had turned the volume down on everything around me.

I read it again.

Zero percent.

Leo wasn’t my biological son.

I looked at him.

The little boy who had called me Dad before he could even say my name properly.

The little boy who used to sleep on my chest when thunderstorms scared him.

The little boy who still held my hand when rooms became too big.

My son.

Even if blood said otherwise.

“Daniel?””

Marcus’s voice pulled me back.

I looked up.

Everyone was waiting for my reaction.

Especially Vanessa.

And that made me angry.

Because I knew what she expected.

She expected me to step away.

She expected me to see Leo differently.

She expected a piece of paper to erase eight years of love.

It didn’t.

I walked toward Leo.

He looked terrified.

“Dad…”

I knelt down.

“Come here.””

He hesitated.

Only for a second.

Then he stepped forward.

I pulled him into my arms.

And I held him.

Tightly.

The entire ballroom watched.

“I don’t care what that paper says,” I whispered.

His shoulders shook.

“You’re my son.””

He started crying.

“I am?””

I closed my eyes.

“You always have been.””

“But I’m not…”

I stopped him.

“Don’t finish that sentence.””

He looked at me.

“You are my son because I raised you.””

I touched his chest.

“Because I was there when you took your first steps.””

His tears fell.

“Because I taught you how to ride a bike.””

I smiled sadly.

“Because you still call me when you have nightmares, even though you pretend you don’t.””

A small broken laugh escaped him.

“Because I chose you.””

That last sentence came out stronger.

“Every single day.””

For the first time that night, Leo smiled.

Just a little.

Behind him, Vanessa looked almost shocked.

Like she had expected a DNA test to solve everything.

She didn’t understand.

Blood creates children.

Love creates fathers.

I stood.

And faced her.

“You knew.””

She looked away.

“Yes.””

“How long?””

Her silence answered.

“How long, Vanessa?””

“Since before we married.””

My body went cold.

Before we married.

“You knew Leo wasn’t mine?””

She nodded slightly.

“And you married me anyway?””

“I loved you.””

I stared at her.

“No.””

She looked hurt.

“No?””

“You loved what came with me.””

Her face hardened.

“That’s not fair.””

“Fair?””

I almost laughed.

“My son spent years thinking he wasn’t worthy of this family.””

I pointed around the room.

“All because you knew a piece of information and used it against him.””

She stepped closer.

“You don’t know everything.””

“Then tell me.””

Her lips parted.

But before she could speak, Marcus interrupted.

“Daniel.””

I looked at him.

His expression was serious.

“There’s something else.””

I felt exhausted.

Another secret.

Another betrayal.

“What now?””

Marcus swallowed.

“The DNA test wasn’t supposed to exist.””

I frowned.

“What?””

He looked at the envelope.

“Because Amelia destroyed the original.””

My heart stopped.

“Why?””

Marcus hesitated.

“Because she didn’t want you to know.””

“Why wouldn’t she want me to know my own son wasn’t biologically mine?””

Marcus looked at Leo.

Then back at me.

“Because Amelia wasn’t trying to hide Leo’s father from you.””

I frowned.

“Then what was she hiding?””

Marcus’s face turned pale.

“She was hiding who took the DNA test.””

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

Before he answered, the ballroom doors suddenly opened.

A man stepped inside.

Older.

Tall.

Carrying the same nervous expression Rachel had worn.

He looked directly at Leo.

And whispered:

“That’s my son.””

The room froze.

I turned toward him.

“Who are you?””

The man took one step forward.

And then he said the name that made Vanessa lose all color from her face.

“I’m Anthony.””

A pause.

“I’m Leo’s biological father.””

But then he looked at me.

May you like

And added:

“And I know why Amelia never told you.””
