Chapter 9: The Message From The Woman I Lost

For three years, I had lived with one certainty.

Amelia was gone.

I had accepted the pain.

I had accepted the empty side of the bed.

I had accepted that there were questions I would never get answers to.

But I had never accepted the possibility that she was still trying to reach me.

My hands shook as I stared at the phone.

The message remained on the screen.

*Daniel, if you are reading this, then Vanessa failed. I’m sorry I had to hide the truth from you.*

And underneath it:

*— Amelia*

Impossible.

That was the only word my mind could form.

Impossible.

“Dad?””

Leo’s voice pulled me back.

I looked at him.

His face was filled with confusion.

He didn’t understand why a name could make an entire room stop breathing.

He didn’t understand why his father looked like he had just seen a ghost.

I quickly lowered the phone.

“Where did you get this?””

Leo shook his head.

“It was in my backpack.””

“Your backpack?””

“Yes.””

I looked at the bag.

The same bag he had carried into the ballroom.

The same bag that had been sitting near the stage.

Who put it there?

And why?

I turned toward Vanessa.

Her face had gone completely pale.

Not the fake panic she had shown earlier.

Real fear.

“You knew about this.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“You knew.””

“Daniel, I swear—”

“You knew Amelia left something behind.””

“I didn’t.””

Her voice cracked.

For once, she sounded desperate.

I walked closer.

“Then why do you look terrified?””

She didn’t answer.

Because she knew.

The message wasn’t just exposing her.

It was proving Amelia had been fighting back long after she was gone.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Daniel.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

His face was filled with shock.

“I didn’t know about a phone.””

“A phone?””

He nodded.

“Amelia had plans.””

The words made me freeze.

“Plans?””

Marcus swallowed.

“She didn’t trust many people.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Apparently she didn’t trust me either.””

Marcus looked hurt.

“That’s not fair.””

“Isn’t it?””

I held up the phone.

“She hid the truth about Leo.””

“Because she was protecting him.””

“From me?””

“No.””

Marcus shook his head.

“From people like Vanessa.””

The room went quiet.

I looked at the message again.

My thumb hovered over the screen.

Should I open it?

Part of me was terrified.

Because what if this was another lie?

Another carefully designed trap?

But another part of me—the part that still loved Amelia—needed to know.

I opened the message.

The screen changed.

A video file appeared.

One video.

No title.

No explanation.

Just a timestamp.

The date was two days before Amelia died.

My heart stopped.

“Daniel?””

Anthony’s voice came from behind me.

“What is it?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because I was staring at the last recording my wife had ever made.

I pressed play.

The ballroom screens remained frozen.

Everyone watched the phone in my hand.

Then Amelia appeared.

My breath disappeared.

There she was.

Alive.

Sitting in our old living room.

The same room where Leo learned to walk.

The same room where we celebrated birthdays.

The same room where I last saw her smile.

She looked tired.

Not sick.

Not afraid.

Just exhausted.

“Daniel,” her voice came through the phone.

My eyes burned instantly.

“I don’t know if you’ll ever see this.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The woman I loved was speaking from the past.

“I hope you do.””

She looked directly into the camera.

“If you’re watching this, something went wrong.””

I closed my eyes.

Because even after all this time, I knew her voice.

I knew when she was pretending to be strong.

And I knew when she was scared.

She was scared.

“I need you to listen carefully.””

The video continued.

“Leo is your son.””

A wave of confusion moved through the room.

I looked at Anthony.

He lowered his eyes.

Amelia continued.

“I know what the DNA test says.””

My chest tightened.

“But DNA does not change what happened in that hospital room.””

She smiled sadly.

“Daniel, you were the first person Leo reached for.””

My vision blurred.

“You were the one who held him when he cried.””

The room disappeared.

I was back there.

Eight years earlier.

Holding a tiny baby.

Promising him I would never leave.

Amelia’s voice continued.

“You became his father before you ever knew there was a question.””

I wiped my face.

Then her expression changed.

Serious.

“Someone will try to convince you that Leo was a mistake.””

She paused.

“They will tell you that blood matters more than love.””

Her eyes moved closer to the camera.

“Don’t believe them.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked away.

“Leo was never the problem.””

Amelia took a breath.

“The problem was the people who saw him as an obstacle.””

The video continued.

“I discovered Vanessa’s plans before I died.””

The room reacted instantly.

Vanessa whispered:

“No.””

I looked at her.

Amelia knew.

She knew everything.

“She wanted control over Daniel’s company.””

Amelia’s voice remained calm.

“But that wasn’t enough.””

The next sentence made my stomach drop.

“She wanted Daniel to believe Leo was not worth protecting.””

I felt sick.

Because those exact words had haunted my son.

“You must understand something,” Amelia said.

“Vanessa didn’t hate Leo because of who he was.””

She looked into the camera.

“She hated him because of what he represented.””

The video paused for a second.

Then Amelia said:

“He was proof that Daniel’s love could never be controlled.””

Nobody spoke.

Not even Vanessa.

Then Amelia continued.

“There is one more thing you need to know.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“One person helped her.””

I looked at Marcus.

He lowered his head.

But Amelia’s next words surprised everyone.

“It wasn’t Marcus.””

The room shifted.

Marcus looked up.

I stared at the screen.

“What?””

Amelia continued.

“Marcus made mistakes. He was weak. He was afraid.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“But he did not create this.””

I looked at my brother.

A complicated wave of emotions moved through me.

Anger.

Pain.

But also relief.

Amelia’s voice softened.

“The person who helped Vanessa had access to information only someone close to our family could know.””

My heart began pounding.

“Someone who knew our schedules.””

Someone who knew our home.””

Someone who knew where I kept important documents.””

The video paused.

Amelia looked directly into the camera.

“Daniel, be careful.””

Then the screen went black.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Everyone was waiting.

Waiting for the rest.

But there was no more.

The video ended.

I stared at the phone.

“That’s it?””

No answer.

Then suddenly, the phone buzzed again.

A new message appeared.

Same number.

Same impossible sender.

*I ran out of time before I could tell you who helped her.*

My heartbeat accelerated.

Another line appeared.

*But I left proof.*

Then another.

*Look inside the lining of Leo’s backpack.*

Everyone turned toward the bag.

Leo slowly picked it up.

His hands shook.

I moved beside him.

“Dad?””

“I’m here.””

He opened the backpack.

His fingers searched along the inside seam.

Then he stopped.

“There’s something here.””

He looked at me.

I helped him pull the fabric open.

Inside was a small hidden compartment.

A flash drive fell into my hand.

Attached to it was a note.

A handwritten note.

I recognized the handwriting immediately.

Amelia’s.

Only four words.

*The truth is inside.*

I looked up.

Vanessa was no longer watching the flash drive.

She was watching the door.

Like she was waiting for someone.

And then I realized something.

She wasn’t afraid because we found the evidence.

She was afraid because she knew exactly what was on it.

Before I could say anything, the ballroom doors opened.

A man in a security uniform entered.

He walked straight toward Vanessa.

Everyone watched.

Vanessa whispered:

“You weren’t supposed to come.””

The man stopped.

Then he looked at me.

May you like

And said:

“Daniel Carter, I think it’s time you learned who really paid me to destroy your family.””
