Chapter 11: The Daughter My Mother Chose

I arrived at Evelyn's office shortly before midnight.

She was waiting in the conference room with three folders arranged neatly on the table.

I didn't sit down.

"Tell me the truth.""

Evelyn looked up.

"Nia—"

"Don't call me sweetheart. Don't tell me to calm down. Just tell me who my parents are.""

She removed her glasses.

Then she opened the first folder.

"Your mother gave birth to you on May fourteenth, thirty-two years ago.""

I frowned.

"Yes.""

"But she didn't give birth to you alone.""

I stared at her.

"She had twins?""

Evelyn nodded.

"Yes.""

My heart began racing.

"Where is the other child?""

"Your biological mother gave birth to two girls. One was adopted shortly after birth.""

I gripped the edge of the table.

"My biological mother?""

Evelyn paused.

"Margaret was not your biological mother, Nia.""

I sat down.

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

"Who was?""

Evelyn opened the folder.

A birth certificate appeared.

The mother's name was Elizabeth Carter.

The father's name was Robert Bennett.

My father.

I looked up.

"My father?""

"Yes.""

"Then Margaret...""

"Margaret was your father's second wife. She adopted you legally when you were three months old.""

I stared at the document.

My father had died when I was nine.

Margaret had always told me that I was the greatest gift he had ever given her.

She had never explained the adoption.

Never once.

I felt tears gathering.

"Why didn't she tell me?""

Evelyn folded her hands.

"Your biological mother died shortly after giving birth. Margaret had been unable to have children. She and Robert had been preparing to adopt when the situation changed.""

"What happened to my twin?""

Evelyn looked at the second folder.

"She was adopted by another family.""

"Where is she?""

"We believe she's alive.""

I stood.

"You believe?""

"Your mother hired a private investigator to locate her several years ago. He found a possible match.""

"Who?""

Evelyn turned the document toward me.

*Vanessa Cole.*

I felt the blood drain from my face.

"No.""

Evelyn nodded slowly.

"Vanessa may be your biological twin sister.""

The room seemed to disappear around me.

Vanessa.

The woman who had worn my mother's necklace.

The woman who had slept with my husband.

The woman who had helped him steal from my inheritance.

My sister?

I pushed away from the table.

"That's impossible.""

"Your mother discovered the connection six months before she died.""

"Why didn't she tell me?""

"She was trying to verify the records.""

I began pacing.

"Does Vanessa know?""

"I don't know.""

I thought about the way she had looked at me in the hospital.

The tears.

The guilt.

The strange familiarity I had felt when I first met her years earlier.

I had always thought she reminded me of someone.

Now I understood why.

"Why would Daniel know?""

Evelyn opened the third folder.

"Because he discovered the adoption records while searching through your mother's private files.""

I stopped.

"And he used them?""

"Possibly.""

"How?""

She handed me another document.

It was a preliminary DNA comparison report.

The result showed a strong probability of a biological sibling relationship between me and Vanessa.

I sat down again.

"Did he tell her?""

Evelyn shook her head.

"There's no evidence that he did.""

I stared at the report.

"Then why would he keep it secret?""

Evelyn looked at me.

"Because Vanessa's biological identity may affect the inheritance structure.""

I frowned.

"How?""

"Your mother established a separate provision concerning any biological children of Robert Bennett. She never intended to leave you without protection, but she wanted the original family records preserved.""

I thought about the letter.

Ask Evelyn about the hospital on May fourteenth.

"What's at the hospital?""

Evelyn closed the folder.

"The original adoption documentation.""

I looked at her.

"Why?""

"Because there was a dispute over the second child's adoption. Your mother suspected the paperwork had been altered.""

"By whom?""

"That's what she wanted to establish.""

I stood.

"I need to speak to Vanessa.""

"Not tonight.""

"She's my sister.""

"She's also a witness in an ongoing investigation.""

I looked at the documents again.

For the first time, I understood that the woman I hated might have been just as manipulated as I had been.

That didn't erase what she had done.

But it changed the shape of the story.

At eight the following morning, Thomas drove me to the hospital.

Vanessa was awake.

When I entered her room, she looked surprised.

"You're back.""

I sat beside her.

"We need to talk.""

She glanced toward the door.

"Is Daniel with you?""

"No.""

I placed the DNA report on her bedside table.

Her eyes moved across the page.

Then her face went completely white.

"Where did you get this?""

"From my mother's attorney.""

She stared at the report.

"No.""

"Is it true?""

Vanessa began shaking her head.

"Daniel told me something about this.""

I leaned forward.

"What did he say?""

"He said your mother had adopted you because your real mother had abandoned you.""

I felt sick.

"That's not true.""

"He said you weren't really part of the family.""

I looked at her.

"And you believed him?""

She began crying.

"I didn't know what to believe.""

I took a breath.

"Did you know we were twins?""

She nodded.

"Daniel showed me a document three months ago.""

My chest tightened.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because he said if I told you, you'd never receive the inheritance.""

I stared at her.

"What?""

"He said your mother had left a clause that would transfer part of the estate if your biological sibling was identified. He told me I could receive half if I helped him.""

I sat back.

There it was.

The reason.

The betrayal.

Daniel hadn't simply wanted Vanessa as his mistress.

He had used her identity to create another path into the estate.

"Did he promise you money?""

She nodded.

"Two million dollars.""

I looked at her for a long time.

"And you agreed to help him?""

"Yes.""

I wanted to hate her.

Part of me still did.

But I also remembered the photograph of the car accident.

The fear in her eyes.

The way she had tried to warn me.

"Why did you change your mind?""

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

"Because I found the medical documents. And because Daniel told me something I couldn't live with.""

"What?""

She looked at me.

"He said once you were declared incapable, he would make sure you never regained control of your life.""

I swallowed.

"How?""

Vanessa closed her eyes.

"He said you would be sent somewhere private. Somewhere nobody could interfere.""

My blood turned cold.

"Did he say where?""

"No. But I heard him speaking to Dr. Harris.""

She reached for my hand.

"They were discussing a facility outside the city.""

I pulled my hand away.

"Did you record them?""

Vanessa nodded.

"There's another recording.""

"Where?""

"On the same memory card. A deleted audio file.""

I stared at her.

"Why didn't you tell Evelyn?""

"Because I was afraid.""

"Of Daniel?""

She nodded.

Then she whispered:

"There's something else. The recording mentions your mother.""

I leaned closer.

"What does it say?""

Vanessa looked toward the door.

Then she spoke so quietly I almost didn't hear her.

"Daniel says he didn't intend to kill Margaret.""

I froze.

"What?""

"He says it was supposed to be a medical emergency. He says he only wanted her to be too weak to change the trust.""

My throat tightened.

"Who gave her the medication?""

Vanessa began crying.

"Dr. Harris.""

"And Daniel knew?""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

I stood so quickly the chair fell backward.

"Why would you wait until now to tell me?""

"Because I have another recording.""

She reached beneath her pillow and removed a small envelope.

Inside was a microSD card.

"Daniel gave me this after Margaret died. He told me to keep it somewhere safe.""

I took it.

"What's on it?""

Vanessa looked at me.

"His conversation with the doctor after your mother's death.""

My hands trembled.

Before I could say anything, the hospital room television changed channels.

A news report appeared.

The headline read:

*BENNETT ESTATE DISPUTE: JUDGE ORDERS EMERGENCY HEARING AFTER NEW MEDICAL EVIDENCE EMERGES.*

Then Daniel's photograph appeared.

He was standing outside the courthouse.

Beside him was a woman.

Laura Whitmore.

And beneath the photograph was a statement from his attorney.

*Daniel Bennett maintains that his wife is medically unfit to manage her inheritance and should be placed under court-supervised care.*

Vanessa looked at me.

"He's going to win.""

I closed my fingers around the memory card.

"No.""

May you like

I looked at the television.

"Not this time.""
