Chapter 3: The Signature That Wasn't Mine
I couldn't stop looking at the photograph.
My own signature.
Three words.
A date.
And an instruction I had never written.
For a moment, I wondered whether I was losing my mind.
Then Evelyn placed a glass of water in front of me.
"Take a breath, sweetheart.""
I picked it up, but my fingers were too unsteady to drink.
"Someone forged my signature.""
"That's our working assumption.""
"Why would someone write something like that?""
"To make it appear that you had agreed to the arrangement.""
"What arrangement?""
Evelyn opened the folder again.
"Your husband has been attempting to consolidate control over several assets. The psychiatric assessment appears to be part of that process.""
I stood up.
"I want to call the police.""
"We will. But first, I want to make sure you understand the entire situation.""
She reached for another folder.
"This is the company Daniel used to submit the trust amendment.""
She showed me a business registration.
*Bennett Strategic Holdings LLC.*
The company had been established seven months earlier.
I recognized the address.
It was the same commercial building Daniel had claimed he was considering purchasing for his investment firm.
"Who owns it?"" I asked.
Evelyn turned the page.
"Daniel Bennett and Vanessa Cole.""
My stomach dropped.
"Together?""
"Fifty-fifty.""
I sank into the chair.
All those evenings.
All those business trips.
All those explanations about difficult clients and delayed projects.
He hadn't been building a future for us.
He had been building one with her.
"How much money has gone through that company?""
Evelyn glanced at her notes.
"That's still being investigated. But we found three transfers from an account connected to your household finances.""
She slid the statements across the desk.
The first transfer was for $18,500.
The second was $42,000.
The third was $76,000.
I stared at the numbers.
"That's almost one hundred and forty thousand dollars.""
"Yes.""
"That money was supposed to cover my medical expenses.""
Evelyn nodded.
I remembered Daniel complaining about the cost of my treatment.
He had told me we needed to reduce unnecessary expenses.
He had suggested canceling our housekeeper.
He had even asked whether I could postpone a follow-up scan.
Meanwhile, he had been transferring money to a company he owned with Vanessa.
I pressed my fingertips against my forehead.
"How long has he been planning this?""
"Possibly longer than we know.""
I looked at her.
"Why didn't my mother tell me?""
Evelyn was quiet for a moment.
Then she reached into her desk drawer and removed a small envelope.
"She did leave you something.""
My name was written across the front in my mother's handwriting.
I knew it immediately.
The letters were slightly tilted to the right. The capital N was always too large.
I hadn't seen her handwriting in nearly two years.
My eyes burned.
"What's this?""
"A letter she asked me to keep until I believed you were in danger.""
I opened it carefully.
Inside was a single page.
My darling Nia,
If you're reading this, something has happened that I hoped you would never have to face.
I know you love Daniel. I know you believe love means standing beside someone through difficult seasons.
But I need you to understand something.
The man who loves you will never need you to become helpless in order to feel powerful.
I stopped.
The words blurred.
I wiped my eyes.
Then continued.
When you first introduced Daniel to me, I noticed how often he answered questions directed at you.
I noticed how he corrected your stories.
I noticed how he explained your feelings before you had a chance to express them.
Perhaps I was wrong about him. I sincerely hoped I was.
But I made arrangements just in case.
Evelyn knows what to do.
And Nia, if anyone ever tells you that you are too sick, too weak, or too confused to protect yourself, remember that you are my daughter.
You have always been stronger than you know.
I love you.
Mom.
I lowered the letter.
For several seconds, neither Evelyn nor I spoke.
Then I asked the question that had been sitting in my chest since I arrived.
"Did my mother know Daniel was cheating?""
Evelyn nodded slowly.
"She suspected.""
"With Vanessa?""
"She had seen them together at a restaurant several months before her death.""
I closed my eyes.
"Why didn't she tell me?""
"She wanted you to make your own decisions. She also believed she needed more evidence before confronting you.""
I folded the letter.
"She was protecting me.""
"She was trying to.""
I looked at the photograph again.
"What happens now?""
Evelyn opened a drawer and took out a business card.
"I've contacted a forensic document examiner. We can challenge the signatures. I'll also notify the trustees and request an immediate freeze on any pending transfers.""
"And the hospital?""
"We'll request the complete records and preserve the electronic audit trail. Your husband may have had help, but we need evidence before accusing anyone publicly.""
I nodded.
For the first time that day, my mind felt clear.
I wasn't going to cry in front of Daniel.
I wasn't going to beg Vanessa for an explanation.
And I certainly wasn't going to let anyone convince me that I was incapable of understanding what was happening to my own life.
My phone rang.
Daniel.
I watched his name flash across the screen.
Then I answered.
"Where are you?"" he demanded.
"Somewhere safe.""
"You're making a terrible mistake.""
"Am I?""
"Yes. You need to come home.""
I looked at Evelyn.
She silently shook her head.
"What for?"" I asked.
"We need to talk.""
"We've had plenty of time to talk, Daniel.""
"Not about this.""
"About what?""
He hesitated.
Then his voice softened.
"About your future.""
I almost laughed.
"My future?""
"Yes. I spoke to Dr. Harris. He's willing to help us.""
There it was again.
Dr. Harris.
"Help us with what?""
"Your condition.""
"My condition?""
"Nia, stop playing games. You know what I'm talking about.""
I leaned back.
"Daniel, I don't have any appointment with Dr. Harris.""
He went quiet.
Then he said something that made my blood turn cold.
"That's because I canceled the one you had this morning.""
I looked at Evelyn.
She immediately began writing something down.
"Why did you cancel it?""
"Because you weren't stable enough.""
"Who gave you permission to make that decision?""
"I'm your husband.""
"That isn't an answer.""
He exhaled.
"Listen to me. Vanessa has told me everything.""
I froze.
"What did she tell you?""
"That you found the documents. That you went to Evelyn. That you're making accusations.""
I looked at the phone.
So Vanessa had been reporting everything.
"Daniel, did you forge my signature?""
His voice changed.
"Don't use words you don't understand.""
"Did you?""
"Come home, Nia.""
"No.""
A pause.
Then he spoke slowly.
"You're going to regret involving Evelyn.""
I ended the call.
Evelyn looked up.
"Did he threaten you?""
"Not directly.""
She reached for the telephone.
"I'm contacting the authorities.""
Before she could dial, my phone buzzed again.
This time it was a text message from Vanessa.
*Please don't trust Evelyn. She isn't telling you everything.*
A second message appeared.
*Daniel told me you would never find out. But there's something you need to know about the night you were admitted to the hospital.*
My pulse quickened.
I typed:
*What happened?*
The typing indicator appeared.
Disappeared.
Then appeared again.
Finally, a photograph arrived.
It showed a hospital corridor.
A clock on the wall read 11:47 p.m.
A man stood outside my hospital room.
I recognized his shoes.
The same polished black shoes Daniel had worn to our wedding.
But he wasn't alone.
A woman stood beside him, holding a clipboard.
I zoomed in.
It was Dr. Harris.
Then Vanessa sent another message.
*He wasn't supposed to be treating you, Nia. He wasn't even supposed to be in that hospital.*
I looked up at Evelyn.
"Do you know who Dr. Harris is?""
Her expression changed.
"Why?""
I turned the phone toward her.
She studied the photograph.
Then she slowly removed her glasses.
"Where did you get this?""
"Vanessa.""
Evelyn looked at the screen again.
For the first time since I had met her, she seemed genuinely frightened.
"That man," she whispered, "was involved in your mother's final hospitalization.""
I couldn't move.
My mother had died after a sudden medical crisis.
We had been told it was an unfortunate complication.
The doctors had assured me everything had been done correctly.
But now the same man appeared in a photograph outside my hospital room.
I looked at Evelyn.
"What are you saying?""
She closed the office door.
Then she returned to her desk and opened a locked cabinet.
Inside was a thick brown file bearing my mother's name.
She placed it in front of me.
"Nia, your mother asked me to give you this only if Daniel ever attempted to take control of your inheritance.""
I stared at the file.
"What is it?""
Evelyn took a breath.
"It's the original investigation into your mother's death.""
May you like
She opened the first page.
And the name written beside the words *Person of Interest* was Daniel Bennett.
