Chapter 13: The Man Who Knew My Name Before I Did

Thomas didn't move.

Neither did I.

The DNA report trembled between my fingers as I stared at the man who had spent the last several days helping me uncover the truth about my mother's death.

The man who had stood between me and Daniel.

The man who had promised to protect me.

My biological father?

It couldn't be true.

I looked at Evelyn.

"Tell me this is wrong.""

She swallowed.

"Nia, I wanted to tell you after we had verified everything.""

"Verified what? That Thomas is my father?""

Thomas stepped closer.

"Let me explain.""

I turned toward him.

"Don't.""

He stopped.

I looked down at the report again. There were two names, two dates, and a percentage that made my stomach turn.

"Did you know?""

Thomas's silence answered before he could.

"How long?""

"Since before Margaret died.""

I felt something inside me break.

"All these years?""

He looked down.

"I didn't know how to approach you.""

"You didn't know how to approach your own daughter?""

His face tightened.

"Your mother made me promise.""

"Margaret?""

He nodded.

I laughed once, without humor.

"Everyone seems to have made promises about my life except me.""

Evelyn moved toward me.

"Please, sit down.""

"I don't want to sit down. I want the truth.""

Thomas took a breath.

"Your biological mother was Elizabeth Carter. She and I were together before I joined Margaret's security team. When she became pregnant, I was working overseas. I came back too late.""

"Too late for what?""

"Elizabeth had died after giving birth.""

I looked at him.

"And the twins?""

"One was placed for adoption. The other was supposed to be placed with a different family. But Margaret intervened.""

I remembered Evelyn's explanation.

Margaret had been unable to have children. Robert had wanted to adopt.

"Why did she choose me?""

Thomas looked at the photograph in my hand.

"Because Elizabeth had asked her to.""

I stared at him.

"What?""

"Elizabeth and Margaret were friends. They had known each other for years. Margaret promised she would take care of you if anything happened.""

I shook my head.

"Then why did she never tell me?""

"Because your adoption became complicated.""

Evelyn opened another folder.

"Robert believed he was adopting both children through a private arrangement. But one child disappeared from the records before the adoption was finalized.""

"Disappeared?""

"Not physically. Administratively. The hospital recorded only one surviving placement. The second adoption file was altered.""

I looked at Thomas.

"By whom?""

He hesitated.

"Laura Whitmore.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Laura?""

Thomas nodded.

"She was working with Margaret at the time. She handled some of the paperwork and believed she was helping protect the children.""

Evelyn interrupted.

"That's only part of the story.""

She placed another document on the table.

It was a letter from Elizabeth, dated two weeks before my birth.

Thomas, if I don't survive, please don't let the girls grow up believing they were unwanted. Margaret has promised to protect them. I know she will love them as her own. But I need you to know that I want both girls to have the chance to find each other someday.

I read it twice.

Then I looked at Thomas.

"Why did Margaret tell me Robert was my father?""

"Because Robert adopted you. He raised you. He loved you. Margaret believed that was what mattered.""

"And you?""

Thomas's eyes filled.

"I was a coward.""

The words came out quietly.

"After Elizabeth died, I couldn't face losing another person. Margaret offered to let me remain close to you. I became her head of security. I watched you grow up from a distance.""

I stepped away from him.

"You watched me grow up?""

"Yes.""

"You were at my birthday parties?""

"Sometimes.""

"You knew when I graduated?""

He nodded.

"And you never told me?""

"I thought it was safer.""

"For whom?""

He had no answer.

I looked at Evelyn.

"And Daniel knew?""

"Not at first," she said.

"He discovered the original birth records while searching through Margaret's files. He realized Thomas was your biological father and used that information to pressure him.""

I turned back to Thomas.

"Is that why Daniel framed you?""

Thomas nodded.

"He threatened to expose the adoption records and accuse me of manipulating Margaret's estate. He said if I stayed away, he would leave your life untouched.""

I stared at him.

"But he didn't leave my life untouched.""

"No.""

"He tried to drug me. He tried to take my inheritance. He may have helped kill Margaret.""

Thomas's face crumpled.

"I know.""

I held the letter against my chest.

For the first time, I understood why Margaret had hidden so many things.

She had been protecting a family secret.

But secrets had become weapons.

And Daniel had learned how to use them.

My phone rang.

It was Marcus.

I answered.

"Nia, you need to come back to the office.""

"What's happened?""

"I've recovered the complete file from the memory card. There's a recording that wasn't included in the copy Vanessa gave us.""

"What recording?""

"Your mother. It's addressed to you.""

I looked at Evelyn.

"Play it.""

Marcus hesitated.

"Not over the phone. There's something else. The original medical sheet from Margaret's hospitalization is in the file.""

My heart began pounding.

"Does it prove what happened?""

"It proves the medication was administered against her written refusal. And it identifies who signed the authorization.""

"Who?""

Marcus lowered his voice.

"Laura Whitmore.""

I closed my eyes.

"Send everything to Evelyn.""

"I will. But Nia, there's a problem.""

"What?""

"The original trust document contains a handwritten amendment. Someone tried to remove it.""

"Who?""

"I found the digital scan. The name on the attempted alteration is Daniel's.""

I looked at Evelyn.

She was already reaching for her phone.

"What's the amendment?"" I asked.

Marcus answered.

"It says the estate cannot pass to anyone who participated in the coercion, concealment, or unlawful treatment of a beneficiary or family member.""

I felt my breath catch.

"Then Daniel can't inherit anything.""

"Not if we can authenticate it.""

The call ended.

Thomas stepped forward.

"Nia, I know I have no right to ask you for anything. But I want to help.""

I looked at him.

I wanted to forgive him.

I also wanted to scream.

Both feelings lived inside me.

"Then help me finish this.""

He nodded.

We returned to Evelyn's office.

Marcus was waiting with a laptop and a sealed envelope.

He played the recording.

My mother's voice filled the room.

"Nia, if you're hearing this, then the people I feared have finally brought the truth into the open.""

I covered my mouth.

"I wanted to tell you everything. About Elizabeth. About Thomas.

About your sister. But I was afraid that the truth would become another way for someone to control you.""

There was a pause.

"Robert loved you. I loved you. Nothing in your birth certificate could ever change that.""

I began crying.

Then Margaret continued.

"I also need you to know that Daniel was not the first person to try to steal what belongs to you. He was simply the most patient.""

The recording crackled.

"I discovered that Laura had been communicating with Dr. Harris. I confronted her. She admitted that she had helped arrange an unauthorized medical intervention during my final hospitalization.""

Evelyn's hand tightened around the desk.

Margaret continued.

"I don't believe she intended for me to die. But she knew the medication could harm me. She knew I had refused it. And she signed anyway.""

I stared at the laptop.

"Daniel knew," Margaret said.

"He was waiting for the result.""

A second of silence.

"Thomas knows where the original records are. I asked him to keep them safe.""

Everyone turned toward Thomas.

He looked stunned.

"I don't know what she's talking about.""

Marcus paused the recording.

Then he examined the file.

"There's a second track.""

He clicked it.

A faint voice emerged beneath Margaret's.

Thomas's voice.

"Margaret, if anything happens to you, I'll protect her.""

Margaret answered.

"You must do more than protect her. You must tell her the truth when she is ready.""

Thomas closed his eyes.

Then Margaret said something that changed everything.

"And if Laura comes looking for the original report, don't give it to her. She isn't the only person who signed it.""

Marcus rewound the recording.

"She said someone else signed it.""

Evelyn looked at the original medical sheet.

At the bottom were two signatures.

Laura Whitmore.

And a second name.

I leaned closer.

The second signature belonged to the hospital administrator.

*Dr. Samuel Harris.*

But beside his signature was a handwritten note.

Authorization received from D. Bennett.

Daniel had not simply known about the treatment.

He had ordered it.

Then Marcus opened the final file.

It was a scanned copy of the original trust amendment.

The document was dated three days before Margaret died.

At the bottom, Margaret had written one final instruction.

If Daniel Bennett attempts to control Nia's estate through medical authority, this document must be presented immediately.

Evelyn looked at me.

"We have enough to stop him.""

I stared at the photograph of my mother.

For the first time, the pieces were finally coming together.

But before anyone could speak, the office door opened.

Laura Whitmore stood in the doorway.

Her face was pale.

"I need to talk to Nia.""

Thomas moved in front of me.

Laura raised both hands.

"Please. I'm not here for Daniel.""

She looked at the documents on the table.

"I'm here because there's one person you haven't found yet.""

Evelyn frowned.

"Who?""

Laura swallowed.

"The person who paid Dr. Harris to alter Margaret's medical records.""

I stared at her.

"Daniel?""

Laura shook her head.

"No.""

May you like

She looked directly at me.

"Your mother paid him.""
