Chapter 6: The Truth Hidden in Lily's DNA
The police station felt colder after midnight.
Nia sat in a secure interview room while a medical examiner reviewed the records recovered from the research center. Lily slept against her chest, wrapped in a fresh blanket that one of the female officers had found in the station's supply room.
Brielle sat across from her.
Her wedding dress had been replaced by a borrowed sweatshirt, and a bandage covered the cut on her forehead.
Neither woman had spoken for several minutes.
Finally, Brielle broke the silence.
“Did you ever know Ryan had a brother?””
Nia nodded.
“Ethan. He died before I met Ryan.””
“Ryan told me he died in a car accident.””
“He told me the same thing.””
Brielle looked down at her hands.
“My mother always said Ethan's death changed Charles. She said he became obsessed with medical research because he couldn't accept that his son was gone.””
Nia watched her carefully.
“Was Ethan sick?””
Brielle hesitated.
“Not that I know of.””
“Then why would Charles need a genetic match from my daughter?””
“I don't know.””
The door opened.
Detective Brooks entered carrying a thick folder.
“We've confirmed the flash drive contains authentic files from the institute's internal system,” she said.
“Some records were deleted, but our team recovered copies from a backup server.””
Nia sat straighter.
“What did you find?””
Brooks placed three documents on the table.
“The first is a medical research protocol. It describes a project involving an inherited blood disorder. The second is a list of individuals whose genetic profiles were considered compatible with the study. The third is a payment record.””
Nia looked at the names.
Several belonged to anonymous donors.
One belonged to Ryan.
Another belonged to Charles.
And near the bottom was Lily Bennett.
Her daughter's name had been highlighted in yellow.
“Why is she on this list?””
Brooks sat down.
“Lily appears to have a genetic marker that researchers believe may be relevant to the disorder being studied.””
“Does that mean she's sick?””
“No. A genetic marker does not automatically mean a person has a disease. We would need qualified medical professionals to interpret the results.””
“Then why did they take her blood?””
“To obtain a sample for testing.””
“Without my permission.””
“Yes.””
Nia looked at the payment record.
“What is this?””
Brooks turned the page.
“It shows a transfer of $750,000 from an account connected to the Whitmore Family Legacy Trust to a company that supplied research materials to the institute.””
Nia frowned.
“And the payment was approved using my name?””
“Correct.””
“But I never authorized it.””
“We have reason to believe your identity was used without your knowledge.””
Nia leaned back.
The pieces were beginning to fit together, but the picture they formed was almost impossible to accept.
Ryan had used her identity to move money.
His father had arranged for Lily's blood to be collected.
The family trust had been activated using documents Nia had never knowingly signed.
And now Lily's genetic information was connected to a research project that appeared to involve millions of dollars.
“Was the research legal?”” Brielle asked.
Brooks took a breath.
“Some of the institute's work may have been legitimate. The concern is whether the researchers obtained samples lawfully, whether consent was falsified, and whether money was diverted through the trust.””
“So they could have been doing real medical research while committing fraud?””
“Those things aren't mutually exclusive.””
Brielle closed her eyes.
“My family donated money to that institute.””
Brooks looked at her.
“How much?””
“Over four million dollars.””
Nia turned toward her.
“You funded them?””
“I funded what I thought was a children's medical program. My mother told me the institute was developing treatments for rare diseases.””
“Did you know about the trust?””
“No.””
“Did you know Lily's name was on the list?””
Brielle shook her head.
“I swear I didn't.””
Nia wanted to believe her.
But trust was no longer something she could offer simply because someone looked frightened.
She had trusted Ryan.
She had trusted his promises, his explanations, and his claims that every signature was harmless.
She would never make that mistake with Lily's future.
“Can I have an independent doctor examine her?”” Nia asked.
“Of course,” Brooks replied.
“We'll arrange an evaluation at a hospital unaffiliated with the institute. No research testing will take place without your informed consent.””
Nia exhaled slowly.
“Thank you.””
Brooks gathered the documents.
“One more thing. The research center's records include a communication between Ryan and a doctor named Samuel Reed. We haven't spoken to him yet, but his name appears repeatedly in the project files.””
“Who is he?”” Brielle asked.
“A geneticist who previously worked at the institute.””
“Previously?””
“He resigned six months ago.””
Nia looked at the highlighted name.
“Why?””
Brooks opened another page.
“According to his resignation letter, he objected to the use of biological samples obtained without proper consent.””
The room went silent.
“Does he know why they wanted Lily?”” Nia asked.
“He may.””
Brooks stood.
“We're locating him now.””
At 2:17 a.m., Nia received a call from an unknown number.
She almost ignored it.
Then she saw that the call was coming through the station's monitored line.
Brooks nodded for her to answer.
“Hello?””
A man's voice spoke softly.
“Ms. Bennett, my name is Dr. Samuel Reed. Detective Brooks asked me to contact you.””
Nia tightened her grip on the phone.
“Do you know why they took my daughter's blood?””
“Yes.””
“Then tell me.””
“I need you to understand something first. The genetic marker in Lily's sample may be important, but it doesn't mean she is ill. The institute's researchers believed her profile could help them understand a rare inherited disorder.””
“Why couldn't they ask me?””
“Because the sample was connected to a larger investigation. And because some people involved were no longer willing to wait for proper authorization.””
“Who?””
There was a pause.
“Charles Whitmore. Ryan. And a group of investors who had poured money into the program.””
Nia stared at the wall.
“Why did Ryan abandon us?””
“I don't know everything about your relationship, but I know he was under pressure to secure a genetic match before the institute's funding deadline.””
“So my daughter was part of his business plan?””
“I'm afraid she became part of it.””
Nia's stomach twisted.
“What happens now?””
“That's why I'm calling. I have records the police don't have. Original laboratory logs.
Emails. And a recording of a meeting where Charles discussed the sample.””
“Can you give them to the police?””
“I can. But there's something else you need to know.””
Nia waited.
“The genetic results may connect Lily to someone whose identity was concealed for years.””
Nia looked at Brooks.
“What do you mean?””
“Ryan and Charles weren't simply looking for a compatible child. They believed they were searching for a biological relative of a patient whose medical records had been sealed.””
“Who was the patient?””
Dr. Reed's voice grew quieter.
“Ethan Whitmore.””
Nia felt a chill crawl up her spine.
“Ethan is dead.””
“Yes,” Reed replied.
“But the institute's records indicate that the original diagnosis may have been wrong.””
Nia couldn't speak.
Brielle had gone completely still.
“Are you saying Ryan's brother might be alive?”” she whispered.
“No. I'm saying there are discrepancies in the records surrounding his death, and someone spent years trying to keep those discrepancies hidden.””
Nia looked down at Lily.
The baby had begun to stir, her tiny mouth opening in a sleepy yawn.
“Why would my daughter be connected to that?””
“Because the sample suggests a possible biological relationship that wasn't accounted for in the family records.””
Nia's heart pounded.
“Are you saying Lily might not be Ryan's daughter?””
“I'm saying the available records raise questions about the family relationships documented by the institute. I cannot responsibly give you a definitive answer without further testing.””
The distinction mattered.
But it didn't make the fear disappear.
Nia had never doubted who Lily's father was.
Now she was being told that the people who had tried to control her daughter might have been hiding something about the Whitmore family itself.
Brooks leaned closer to the phone.
“Dr. Reed, do you have evidence that can be independently verified?””
“Yes. I have copies of the original lab records and an internal memorandum signed by Charles Whitmore.””
“Where are you?””
“I'm at a hotel outside the city. I can meet you at the station at eight this morning.””
“Don't go anywhere,” Brooks said.
“We'll arrange protection.””
Dr. Reed hesitated.
“There's one more thing.””
Nia's stomach tightened.
“What?””
“The memorandum names the person who authorized the original sample collection.””
“Charles?””
“No.””
The doctor took a breath.
“It was Eleanor Ashford.””
Brielle stood so abruptly that her chair scraped across the floor.
“My mother?””
“Yes.””
“That is impossible.””
“I'm sorry.””
Brielle shook her head.
“No. She wouldn't do that.””
Nia watched her face collapse.
The woman who had helped organize Brielle's wedding, who had worn pearls and spoken about family honor, had apparently authorized the collection of a newborn's genetic material.
But the revelation went deeper.
“Why would Eleanor be involved?”” Nia asked.
Dr. Reed answered carefully.
“Because she knew the identity of the biological donor before the institute did.””
Nia looked down at Lily.
“What donor?””
There was a long silence.
Then Dr. Reed spoke.
“The original sample wasn't collected from Lily, Ms. Bennett. It was collected from you.””
Nia stopped breathing.
“What?””
“Your medical records show that a sample was taken during your pregnancy. The institute used it to compare your genetic profile with Lily's.””
“But I never consented to research.””
“I believe that is true.””
“Then what did they discover?””
Dr. Reed exhaled.
“Your genetic profile was the reason they began looking for your child.””
Nia's fingers went numb around the phone.
“Why?””
“Because the results suggest that your biological family may have a connection to the original Whitmore medical records—one that Charles and Eleanor have been concealing for decades.””
Brielle covered her mouth.
Nia stared at the sleeping baby in her arms.
She had come to the wedding believing Ryan's secret was that he had stolen money and abandoned his child.
Now she was beginning to understand that the money, the trust, and the stolen blood were only pieces of a much older secret.

And if Dr. Reed was telling the truth, the question was no longer why Ryan wanted Lily.
It was why the Whitmore family had been searching for Nia long before Lily was born.
