Chapter 9: The Test That Changed Everything
The document arrived at the police station shortly after noon.
It was sealed in a transparent evidence bag, marked with the date and time of recovery. A forensic officer had found it inside a locked drawer in the Whitmore estate's private archive.
Unlike the other files, it had not been destroyed.
Someone had deliberately preserved it.
Detective Brooks placed it on the table in front of Nia.
“We haven't authenticated the document yet,” she warned.
“And we need to be careful about what it actually says.””
Nia stared at the heading.
*PATERNITY EXCLUSION — ORIGINAL LABORATORY RESULT.*
Her mouth went dry.
“Is this about Ryan?””
Brooks nodded.
“According to the document, a genetic comparison was conducted between Ryan Whitmore and a biological sample attributed to Lily Bennett.””
Nia felt her heart begin to pound.
“And?””
“The result states that Ryan was excluded as the biological father.””
For several seconds, Nia couldn't speak.
She had expected another lie. Another forged signature. Another secret involving money or medical records.
She had not expected this.
“That's impossible,” she whispered.
Brooks didn't argue.
“It's one document. We need to establish where the samples came from, whether the test was properly conducted, and whether the report has been altered.””
“But if it's real—”
“Then it raises serious questions about the identity of Lily's biological father.””
Nia looked through the glass wall at the corridor.
Brielle stood outside, speaking with an officer. When she noticed Nia watching, she immediately came inside.
“What happened?””
Nia pushed the evidence bag toward her.
Brielle read the heading.
Her hand flew to her mouth.
“Oh, God.””
Nia looked at her.
“Did Ryan know?””
“I don't know.””
“Did he ever tell you he thought Lily wasn't his?””
Brielle shook her head.
“No. He told me you were pregnant when you broke up, but he said you had been seeing someone else.””
Nia felt a wave of anger so intense that she had to grip the table.
“He told me he wanted to marry me. He told me we would raise our child together. Then he disappeared without even asking whether she survived.””
Brielle's eyes filled.
“I'm sorry.””
Nia looked away.
“Stop apologizing for him.””
“I'm not apologizing for him.””
Brielle pulled out a chair.
“I'm apologizing because I helped create the conditions that allowed him to keep lying. I believed his version of everything because it was easier than questioning the life I wanted.””
Nia said nothing.
Brielle continued.
“I can't undo that. But I can help you find out what happened.””
Brooks closed the folder.
“First, we need to speak with the person who ordered the test.””
She looked toward the door.
“Ryan Whitmore.””
Ryan sat in a secure interview room with a paper cup of water in front of him.
When Brooks entered with Nia, his face changed.
He looked at the document in her hand.
Then he closed his eyes.
“You found it.””
Nia placed the evidence bag on the table.
“Did you know?””
Ryan stared at the paper.
“Yes.””
The word was so quiet that Nia almost didn't hear it.
“Since when?””
“Since the day Lily was born.””
Nia felt the room shrink around her.
“You knew she might not be your daughter?””
Ryan nodded.
“Your pregnancy was complicated. My father had arranged for the institute to review some of the medical records, and the initial genetic comparison raised a question.””
“You had my medical records reviewed without my permission?””
“Yes.””
“And you still left me alone?””
Ryan looked at her.
“I was told that if the test confirmed the exclusion, my father would make sure I never saw you or the baby again.””
Nia stared at him in disbelief.
“You're telling me your father threatened to keep you away from your child, so you decided to abandon us before he could?””
Ryan's eyes filled with tears.
“I know how it sounds.””
“It sounds like a coward explaining why he was a coward.””
He flinched.
Brooks leaned forward.
“Who ordered the test?””
“My father.””
“Who collected the sample?””
“Margaret Ellis arranged it through the institute.””
“And who authorized the report?””
Ryan hesitated.
“Dr. Samuel Reed's supervisor.””
“Name?””
“Dr. Victor Hale.””
Brooks wrote it down.
Nia kept her eyes on Ryan.
“Did you ever love me?””
He looked at her.
“Yes.””
“Then tell me the truth. Who is Lily's father?””
Ryan's face crumpled.
“I don't know.””
Nia stood so quickly that her chair scraped across the floor.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“It's the truth. The original test excluded me, but my father never showed me the underlying data. He said the result was confidential and that I needed to stop asking questions.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because I was afraid of what it meant.””
“You were afraid?””
Her voice shook.
“I was the one who carried her. I was the one who nearly died giving birth. I was the one who held her when she cried through the night. And you were afraid of a piece of paper?””
Ryan lowered his head.
“Yes.””
Nia stared at him for a long moment.
Then she sat down again.
“Tell me about the night you left.””
Ryan rubbed his face.
“My father came to the apartment. He had the first version of the laboratory report. He said you had lied to me about the pregnancy and that the child belonged to another man.””
“I never cheated on you.””
“I know.””
Nia's breath caught.
“You know?””
Ryan looked at her.
“I believed you. Even then, I believed you. But my father said he had evidence that the test was accurate, and he threatened to expose you publicly if I stayed.””
“So you chose your reputation.””
“I chose the easiest way out.””
For the first time, Ryan didn't try to defend himself.
He simply looked broken.
Nia wanted to hate him cleanly, without complications. She wanted him to be a monster whose motives were simple enough to understand.
But his admission made the truth harder.
He had known she was telling the truth about their relationship.
He had known she was frightened and vulnerable.
And he had left anyway.
“Did you ever try to find out who Lily's father was?”” Brooks asked.
“Yes.””
“What did you discover?””
Ryan looked at the document.
“Nothing reliable. The original laboratory records were removed from the system. The only copy I saw was the exclusion report.””
“Why was it preserved in your father's archive?””
“I think he wanted to use it against Nia if she ever challenged the trust.””
Nia felt sick.
Her daughter had been reduced to a bargaining chip in a war between adults who were willing to manipulate every fact they could find.
Brooks closed the file.
“We'll need your cooperation in obtaining a new, independent test. You will not be asked to provide a sample without informed consent, and the results will be handled through the proper legal process.””
Ryan nodded.
“Of course.””
Nia looked at him.
“Don't say that as if you're doing me a favor.””
He swallowed.
“You're right.””
She stood.
“I'm done talking to you.””
As she reached the door, Ryan spoke again.
“Nia.””
She stopped but didn't turn.
“If the test confirms that I'm not her father, that doesn't change what I did.””
“No,” she replied.
“It doesn't.””
She left him sitting alone.
That afternoon, Nia took Lily to an independent children's hospital under arrangements made by Detective Brooks.
A pediatric specialist examined the baby and confirmed that she appeared healthy. The doctor explained that the old genetic report was insufficient to diagnose any condition and that further testing should occur only if Nia chose to proceed after receiving clear medical advice.
Nia agreed to a limited, independent parentage test involving herself, Lily, and the person identified by the investigation as the likely biological father.
She refused any additional research testing.
“No one collects another sample unless I understand exactly why,” she told the doctor.
“And I want copies of every form.””
The doctor nodded.
“That's entirely reasonable.””
Brielle waited with her in the family consultation room.
When the nurse finally returned with an update, Nia's stomach tightened.
“The preliminary comparison is complete,” the nurse said.
“The laboratory has identified a biological relationship that is inconsistent with the original report. The specialist will explain the findings in detail once the full verification is finished.””
Nia gripped the arms of her chair.
“What does that mean?””
“It means the earlier report should not be relied upon without further investigation.””
Brielle leaned forward.
“Could it have been falsified?””
“That's a question for the forensic review. We can only tell you that the current results do not support the conclusion in the document you brought us.””
After the nurse left, Nia sat motionless.
The old report had said Ryan wasn't Lily's father.
The new evidence suggested that the report might have been deliberately manipulated.
But who would do that?
And why?
Her phone rang.
Detective Brooks.
“Nia, we found Dr. Victor Hale.””
“Where?””
“He's in custody on an unrelated fraud charge. He has agreed to speak with us about the Whitmore Institute.””
“What did he say?””
“He confirmed that the original laboratory result was altered after it was issued.””
Nia closed her eyes.
“Who changed it?””
Brooks paused.
“Dr. Hale says he was instructed to change the conclusion by Charles Whitmore. But he claims the order came from someone else.””
“Who?””
“Eleanor Ashford.””
Nia felt the air leave her lungs.
Her biological mother had arranged the collection of her blood. She had hidden the adoption. She had apparently helped the institute obtain Lily's genetic information.
And now she was being named in a conspiracy to manipulate a parentage report.
“Why would Eleanor do that?””
“We don't know yet. Dr. Hale says she told him the original result would destroy two families if it became public.””
Nia looked down at Lily, who was sleeping in her carrier.
“Two families?””
“Yes.””
Brooks took a breath.
“There is one more development. The original test wasn't designed solely to establish paternity. It also included a comparison with a second biological sample.””
“Whose?””
“Ethan Whitmore's.””
Nia's hands went cold.
“What did it show?””
“The preliminary records suggest a close genetic relationship between Lily and Ethan.””
Nia remembered the adoption record.
Eleanor's daughter.
Ethan's half-sister.
Her own half-brother.
If the genetic comparison was genuine, Lily's connection to Ethan was not simply a distant family resemblance.
But the records had been altered so thoroughly that nobody yet knew what had been concealed.
Then Brooks said something that made Nia sit upright.
“There's a possibility that the person listed as Ethan Whitmore's father was not his biological father, and that the same discrepancy appears in the records connected to Lily.””
Nia looked toward Brielle.
The other woman had gone pale.
“Who was Ethan's biological father?”” Nia asked.
“We're still verifying the evidence.””
“Please, just tell me what you know.””
Brooks hesitated.
“Dr. Hale says the original records identified a man named Michael Reed as Ethan's biological father.””
Nia stared at the phone.
Michael Reed.
The name on the photograph Eleanor had shown her.
The man she had believed was her biological father.
If the records were accurate, Michael Reed might have been the biological father of both Nia and Ethan.
Which would make Lily Ethan's niece.
But that still didn't explain why the paternity test had excluded Ryan.
Nia looked down at her daughter.
She had come to the wedding believing she was exposing a cheating fiancé and a financial criminal.
Now she was discovering that the people surrounding her had spent decades concealing biological relationships, manipulating medical records, and using children as instruments in a private war.
And the final answer was still missing.
Then a message arrived from an unknown number.
It contained a photograph of a man standing outside a small coastal house.
The man had gray hair, a weathered face, and eyes that looked hauntingly familiar.
May you like
Underneath the photograph were six words.
*Your father is alive. Ask Eleanor why.*
