Chapter 8: The Groom's Confession

Ryan looked as though he hadn't slept in days.

His expensive suit was rumpled, one side of his collar was torn, and a dark bruise spread across his cheekbone. Two officers stood behind him, but he seemed unconcerned about the handcuffs.

His attention was fixed entirely on Nia.

“Hello, sweetheart.””

Nia recoiled.

“Don't call me that.””

Ryan's smile faded.

“I suppose I deserve that.””

“You deserve a lot worse.””

He looked toward the baby carrier.

“How's Lily?””

Nia stepped in front of it.

“You don't get to ask about her.””

For a moment, Ryan's face tightened with genuine hurt.

Then the expression vanished.

“You have no idea what my father has done.””

“Your father?”” Nia laughed bitterly.

“You used my identity to steal money. You helped arrange the collection of my daughter's blood. You abandoned us and then tried to use a forged guardianship document to claim her. But somehow, you're the victim?””

Ryan lowered his eyes.

“I never wanted you to get hurt.””

“Then why did you hurt me?””

He didn't answer.

Detective Brooks gestured toward a chair.

“Sit down, Mr. Whitmore.””

Ryan obeyed.

His eyes never left Nia.

“Eleanor told you, didn't she?”” he asked.

“Told me what?””

“That Ethan wasn't my father's biological son.””

Nia felt a chill move through her.

“Why are you telling me this?””

“Because Charles will lie about everything else. He always has.””

Brooks placed a recorder on the table.

“You're here to provide information about the investigation. You may decline to answer questions that could incriminate you. Do you understand?””

“Yes.””

“Then start with the financial transfers.””

Ryan glanced at Nia.

“Those transfers were arranged by my father. He created the trust and instructed me to move money through the companies.””

“You signed the documents,” Brooks said.

“I did.””

“And you used Nia Bennett's identity.””

Ryan swallowed.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because my father told me it was temporary. He said the trust needed a neutral administrator before the research program could receive additional funding.””

Nia stared at him.

“And you believed him?””

“No.””

The answer surprised her.

Ryan rubbed his cuffed wrists.

“I knew some of the paperwork wasn't right. I knew Nia hadn't authorized every transfer. But I was already involved, and every time I tried to pull away, my father threatened to destroy me.””

Nia's voice went cold.

“So you decided to destroy me instead.””

Ryan closed his eyes.

“I know.””

“You don't know anything.””

She stepped closer.

“You weren't there when Lily was born. You weren't there when I thought I was going to die on that hospital bed. You weren't there when I had to decide whether I could afford the medicine the pediatrician recommended.””

Ryan's face crumpled.

“I wanted to come.””

“Then you should have come.””

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

He looked at the floor.

“My father told me that if I acknowledged Lily, the trust would be activated. He said the institute would be able to access her medical information and that I would lose control of everything.””

Nia stared at him.

“You're telling me you abandoned your daughter to protect her?””

“No. I'm telling you I was a coward.””

For the first time, Ryan sounded honest.

It didn't make Nia forgive him.

It only made the truth uglier.

Brooks leaned forward.

“Why did Charles want Lily's genetic sample?””

Ryan hesitated.

“Because of Ethan.””

“Explain.””

Ryan looked toward Eleanor.

She was sitting rigidly on the sofa, her hands clenched in her lap.

“My father spent years trying to develop a treatment for the blood disorder Ethan had been diagnosed with,” Ryan said.

“When the original treatment failed, he blamed the doctors. He blamed the hospital. He blamed everyone except himself.””

“Was Ethan ill?”” Nia asked.

Ryan nodded.

“He was diagnosed as a child. But when he reached adulthood, he began questioning the diagnosis. He said the records didn't match his symptoms. He wanted a second opinion.””

“And your father refused?””

“He paid for the records to be sealed.””

Brooks wrote something down.

“Why?””

“Because Ethan had discovered that his biological father was someone else. He was going to expose the adoption and the financial arrangements connected to the institute.””

Nia looked at Eleanor.

“Who was Ethan's father?””

Eleanor stared at the floor.

Ryan answered for her.

“Dr. Samuel Reed's father.””

The room went silent.

Brooks slowly set down her pen.

“Are you certain?””

“That's what the records showed. Eleanor had a relationship with a physician before she married Charles. Ethan was born from that relationship, but Charles raised him as his own.””

Eleanor's voice trembled.

“I never wanted any of this to happen.””

Ryan turned toward her.

“You let Charles convince you that the truth would destroy the family.””

“I was trying to protect my children.””

“You protected your reputation.””

Eleanor flinched.

Nia felt dizzy.

The family history was becoming a maze of hidden relationships, sealed records, and people who had decided that the truth was too dangerous to reveal.

But one question remained.

“What does any of this have to do with me?”” she asked.

Ryan looked at her.

“Ethan was your biological half-brother.””

Nia went still.

The words seemed to echo inside her head.

“My brother?””

“Yes. You shared the same mother.””

Eleanor covered her face.

Nia turned toward her.

“You knew?””

“I suspected,” Eleanor whispered.

“I didn't know the full truth until years later.””

“And Lily?””

Ryan looked toward the carrier.

“Lily inherited the same genetic marker that appeared in Ethan's medical records. The institute believed that her sample could help them determine whether the original diagnosis was correct.””

“Then why did you steal money?””

Ryan's jaw tightened.

“Because the research program was failing. My father had promised investors a treatment that didn't exist yet. He needed funding to keep the institute running until he could produce results.””

“So he used Lily.””

“He used everyone.””

Brooks leaned back.

“Mr. Whitmore, you're admitting to financial fraud and identity theft. Why should we believe anything else you say?””

“Because I have the original correspondence.””

Ryan looked at his cuffed hands.

“My father keeps copies of everything. He believes controlling the records means controlling the truth.””

“Where are they?””

“In a private archive beneath the Whitmore estate.””

Brooks stood.

“We'll need the location and the access details.””

Ryan gave them.

Then he looked at Nia again.

“There is something else.””

She shook her head.

“I don't want another secret.””

“This one concerns your daughter.””

“Everything seems to concern my daughter.””

Ryan swallowed.

“The guardianship document was real. Your signature was obtained under false pretenses, but my father had it filed before Lily was born. He intended to use it if you refused to cooperate with the institute.””

Nia felt the blood drain from her face.

“Can he take her?””

“Not automatically,” Brooks interrupted.

“The document's validity is under investigation. No one has authority to remove Lily from your care simply because a paper exists.””

Ryan nodded.

“But there's a second document.””

Brooks turned sharply.

“What second document?””

Ryan looked at Nia.

“A declaration stating that you were medically incapable of raising a child.””

Nia gripped the edge of the table.

“What?””

“My father had a psychiatrist sign it. He intended to use it to challenge your custody.””

“That never happened.””

“Not yet.””

Brooks immediately called another officer and requested a search of the relevant records.

Ryan leaned forward.

“I can tell you where to find the declaration. But you have to understand something. My father isn't trying to take Lily because he wants to raise her.””

“Then why?””

Ryan's eyes filled with fear.

“Because if the research fails, the institute loses everything. The investors pull out. The foundation collapses. And my father goes to prison.””

He looked at the baby.

“He thinks Lily is his last chance to save himself.””

Nia stared at him.

“And you helped him.””

“Yes.””

“Why should I ever let you near her?””

Ryan's voice broke.

“You shouldn't.””

The answer hung in the air.

For a moment, Nia saw the man she had loved—the boyish smile, the promises, the future she had imagined before she knew how easily he could abandon them.

Then she remembered the hospital room.

The empty chair beside her bed.

The message he had never answered.

She felt nothing but exhaustion.

Brooks closed the folder.

“Mr. Whitmore, you're going to provide a full statement and cooperate with the investigation. That doesn't guarantee you immunity from prosecution.””

“I understand.””

Two officers escorted Ryan toward the door.

As he passed Nia, he stopped.

“I loved you,” he whispered.

Nia looked at him.

“Maybe you loved the way I made you feel. Maybe you loved having someone who believed every word you said. But love doesn't leave a woman alone with a newborn and call it protection.””

Ryan lowered his head.

She stepped away.

He was taken down the hall.

Brielle stood beside Nia, silent.

Then Eleanor rose from the sofa.

“Nia, I need to tell you something about your biological father.””

Nia turned slowly.

“You said he was a doctor.””

“Yes.””

“Ryan said he was Dr. Reed's father.””

Eleanor nodded.

“But there was another part of the story. Something Charles made me swear never to reveal.””

She reached into her handbag and pulled out an old photograph.

It showed a young man standing outside a hospital, one arm resting around Eleanor's shoulders.

On the back was a handwritten name.

*Dr. Michael Reed.*

Nia studied his face.

There was something familiar about his eyes.

Something she had seen every morning in the mirror.

Eleanor whispered, “He didn't know you existed until it was too late.””

Nia looked up.

“What happened to him?””

Eleanor's lips trembled.

“He died in a hospital fire the same year Ethan disappeared from the public records.””

And before Nia could ask another question, Detective Brooks received a call.

The private archive beneath the Whitmore estate had been opened.

Someone had already removed every file.

Except one.

A document bearing Nia's full name.
