Chapter 9: The Name Written Before He Was Born

Emily felt Noah’s fingers tighten around hers.

The stranger’s words hung in the night air.

Was never only Daniel’s son.

She looked at Daniel.

The man she had loved.

The man she had hated.

The man standing in front of her like he was ready to take a bullet for them.

“Daniel?””

He didn’t answer.

That silence hurt more than anything.

“Look at me.””

Slowly, he did.

And Emily saw it.

Regret.

Not confusion.

Not anger.

Regret.

Her heart sank.

“You knew.””

Daniel took a breath.

“Emily…”

“You knew.””

“I knew there was something you deserved to know.””

Her voice broke.

“And you still didn’t tell me?””

The stranger smiled.

“Some things are difficult to admit.””

Daniel turned toward him.

“Enough, Victor.””

The man’s smile faded slightly.

So now she had a name.

Victor.

Emily stared.

“Who is he?””

Nobody answered.

Victor stepped closer.

“I’m the person who has spent twenty-five years cleaning up your family’s mistakes.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“You destroyed lives.””

Victor laughed softly.

“You still tell yourself that story?””

Samuel stepped forward.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Victor looked at Samuel.

“Still playing the hero?””

Samuel’s jaw tightened.

Emily noticed.

Everyone had history with this man.

Everyone except her.

Again.

She was the last person to know.

“What does he mean?”” Emily asked.

Daniel looked at her.

“The truth is complicated.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“The truth is always complicated with you.””

Her eyes moved to Noah.

“My son deserves the truth too.””

Noah looked between them.

He was trying to stay calm.

Trying to understand.

Daniel looked at him.

“You do.””

“Then tell me.””

Daniel was quiet.

Finally, he said:

“Your mother and I couldn’t have children.””

Emily froze.

The words were unexpected.

Daniel continued.

“After years of trying, we were told it was impossible.””

Noah looked confused.

“But I was born.””

“Yes.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You were.””

Victor stepped closer.

“Because your father made a choice.””

Daniel glared.

“Don’t.””

Victor ignored him.

“He used the research he spent years investigating.””

Emily felt cold.

“No.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Emily…”

“No.””

She backed away.

“You told me you hated what they were doing.””

“I did.””

“Then what did you do?””

Daniel looked down.

The answer came quietly.

“I used their work to save our chance of having a family.””

Emily stared.

The world seemed to slow.

“You created Noah?””

Daniel shook his head immediately.

“No.””

He looked at his son.

“Never.””

The pain in his voice was real.

“I didn’t create him. I helped make it possible for him to exist.””

Victor smiled.

“And that is exactly why they wanted him.””

Emily looked at Victor.

“They?””

Victor nodded.

“The people behind the research.””

“Who?””

Victor looked at her.

“The people who funded everything.””

The silence grew.

Emily whispered:

“Who?””

Victor’s eyes moved to Evelyn.

Then Margaret.

Then Samuel.

“Your family.””

Emily felt numb.

“My family?””

Victor nodded.

“Your great-grandfather started the project.””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Emily looked at her.

“And you knew?””

Evelyn didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Emily laughed bitterly.

“Of course.””

She looked around.

“My entire life.””

She touched her chest.

“My entire family.””

Then Noah.

“My son.””

Her voice shook.

“And everyone knew except me.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“I was trying to protect you.””

Emily looked at him.

“You don’t get to use that word anymore.””

He stopped.

Because she was right.

Victor watched silently.

Then he said:

“You want to know the worst part?””

Nobody responded.

He continued.

“Noah was never the goal.””

Emily frowned.

“What?””

“The research wasn’t about creating a perfect child.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Stop.””

Victor’s face became serious.

“It was about finding a way to transfer information.””

Emily felt confused.

“Information?””

Victor nodded.

“Memory.””

The word made everyone silent.

Emily looked at Daniel.

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel said nothing.

Victor continued.

“Your son carries a genetic pattern that allows his brain to retain certain inherited information.””

Emily shook her head.

“No.””

“That is why they wanted him.””

“They?””

Victor looked toward the darkness.

“The organization.””

Daniel’s face tightened.

“The people who are coming.””

Emily understood.

The danger wasn’t because Noah was powerful.

It was because someone believed he was.

Victor looked at Noah.

“They thought he could unlock everything your great-grandfather hid.””

Noah swallowed.

“What did he hide?””

Victor smiled slightly.

“Proof.””

Emily looked at him.

“Proof of what?””

Victor’s expression changed.

“Proof that the research was never about helping humanity.””

The night became silent.

Even the wind seemed to stop.

Samuel spoke.

“What are you saying?””

Victor looked at him.

“I’m saying your father was right.””

Everyone froze.

Emily looked at Samuel.

“My grandfather?””

Victor nodded.

“He discovered what the research had become.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“And they killed him for it.””

Emily’s eyes widened.

“My grandfather was murdered?””

Nobody answered.

Because she already knew.

Victor looked at her.

“Yes.””

Emily felt sick.

All these years.

All the stories.

All the lies.

Her family wasn’t broken because people left.

It was broken because people were trying to hide something.

Then Noah spoke.

“Why do I matter?””

Everyone looked at him.

The question was simple.

A child asking why adults had turned his existence into a war.

Daniel walked toward him.

“You don’t.””

Noah looked confused.

Daniel knelt.

“You don’t matter because of some secret in your blood.””

He placed a hand on Noah’s shoulder.

“You matter because you’re you.””

Noah looked down.

“But everyone is fighting because of me.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at Victor.

“They’re fighting because of what they think you are.””

Emily watched her son.

And finally understood.

The thing they were trying to protect wasn’t a secret.

It was his humanity.

A sound interrupted them.

A phone ringing.

Victor looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“What is it?”” Emily asked.

Victor didn’t answer.

He slowly turned the phone around.

A message appeared.

THEY HAVE ARRIVED.

Then the road behind them filled with headlights.

One.

Two.

Five.

Ten.

Cars surrounded the abandoned building.

Daniel stepped in front of Emily.

Samuel moved beside him.

Even Victor looked afraid.

Emily stared.

“Who are they?””

Victor whispered:

“The people who own the research.””

The car doors opened.

Men and women stepped out.

But one person walked ahead of them.

An older woman.

Calm.

Elegant.

Powerful.

Everyone recognized her.

Evelyn’s face turned pale.

“No.””

Emily looked at her.

“Who is she?””

Evelyn whispered:

“The woman who funded everything.””

The woman stopped in front of them.

Then looked directly at Noah.

“I’ve been waiting for you.””

Emily held her son tighter.

The woman smiled.

“Don’t worry.””

She looked at Daniel.

“I don’t want to hurt him.””

A pause.

“I only want what belongs to me.””

Daniel’s face changed.

Because he knew what she meant.

Emily felt her stomach drop.

“What belongs to you?””

The woman smiled.

“The truth.””

She reached into her coat and pulled out an old photograph.

A photograph Emily recognized.

The same one from years ago.

The one with Daniel.

Samuel.

And her as a child.

But this time, there was someone else in the picture.

A baby.

A baby being held by the woman standing in front of them.

Emily stared.

“No…”

The woman smiled.

“Yes.””

She looked at Noah.

“Because before you were Daniel’s son…”

May you like

She paused.

“You were mine.””
