Chapter 8: The Truth Hidden in His Blood

The escape tunnel was so narrow that Emily could barely walk beside Noah.

The walls pressed in around them.

The air was cold.

Every step felt heavier than the last.

Behind them, the sounds from the underground room faded.

But Emily couldn’t stop thinking about Richard.

The man she had blamed.

The man who had threatened them.

The man who had just stayed behind so they could escape.

Nothing made sense anymore.

Daniel walked ahead with the folder pressed against his chest.

Samuel followed behind him.

For the first time in twenty years, father and son-in-law walked side by side.

But neither spoke.

Too many things remained broken.

Too many questions were still waiting.

Finally, Emily stopped.

“Enough.””

Everyone turned.

Daniel looked at her.

“What happened?””

She stared at all of them.

“No more walking through secret tunnels while everyone decides what I’m allowed to know.””

Nobody answered.

She looked at Daniel.

“You’re alive.””

Then Samuel.

“You knew about everything.””

Then Evelyn.

“You lied about your own death.””

Her voice cracked.

“And my mother…”

She stopped.

Because even saying it hurt.

“My mother has been carrying a secret for my entire life.””

Noah stood beside her.

Silent.

Watching.

Emily took a breath.

“I want the truth.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“You deserve it.””

“Then tell me.””

He looked at the folder.

Then opened it.

Inside were documents.

Photographs.

Research files.

And one picture that made Emily freeze.

It was a picture of her.

Pregnant.

She grabbed it.

“Where did you get this?””

Daniel looked away.

“I took it.””

“When?””

“The day before you gave birth.””

Emily stared at him.

“You were there?””

“Yes.””

Her eyes filled.

“You were there and you didn’t come inside?””

Daniel looked destroyed.

“I was standing outside the hospital.””

“Why?””

“Because I saw them.””

“Who?””

“The people watching us.””

Emily looked at the picture again.

“You knew they were following me.””

“Yes.””

“And you let me face everything alone?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I thought leaving was the only way to keep you alive.””

Emily looked at Noah.

The anger inside her fought with the sadness.

“You made that choice for me.””

“I know.””

“You decided I was better off without you.””

“I was wrong.””

The simple admission surprised her.

Daniel stepped closer.

“I spent years believing I was protecting you.””

He looked at Noah.

“But I was also stealing time from my son.””

Noah looked away.

Daniel swallowed.

“I’m sorry.””

The boy didn’t answer.

Emily knew that silence.

It was the same silence she had carried for years.

The silence of someone hurt too deeply to forgive quickly.

Samuel opened one of the files.

“Daniel discovered the research project while investigating your great-grandfather’s company.””

Emily looked at the documents.

“What exactly were they doing?””

Daniel answered.

“They were searching for inherited traits that could predict human potential.””

She frowned.

“That sounds like science.””

“It started that way.””

He turned a page.

“Then people with money and power got involved.””

Evelyn’s expression hardened.

“They wanted control.””

Emily looked at her.

“You knew.””

“Yes.””

“You knew all these years.””

Evelyn nodded.

“And I spent every day regretting it.””

Emily looked away.

Regret wasn’t enough.

Not yet.

Daniel continued.

“They believed certain families carried valuable genetic markers.””

Emily looked at Noah.

“And they thought he had one.””

“Yes.””

“What marker?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then handed her a document.

She read it.

Her eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

“What?””

She looked up.

“What does this mean?””

Daniel sat down.

“It means Noah’s DNA showed unusual resistance to a rare disease.””

Emily frowned.

“That’s it?””

“Yes.””

She stared.

“Then why would anyone hurt him?””

Daniel looked at her.

“Because they didn’t care about the truth.””

He tapped the document.

“They wanted to turn it into something else.””

Emily understood.

“They wanted to use him.””

Daniel nodded.

“But they were wrong about something.””

“What?””

Daniel looked at Noah.

“He was never valuable because of his blood.””

Noah looked at him.

“Then why?””

Daniel smiled sadly.

“Because he was kind.””

The words surprised everyone.

Daniel continued.

“They spent years looking for a special child.””

He looked at Emily.

“But they never understood that the most important thing about a person isn’t what they inherit.””

His eyes moved back to Noah.

“It’s what they choose.””

Noah looked down.

Emily saw something change in his face.

A little bit of the fear disappeared.

Then a sound came from the tunnel entrance.

Everyone turned.

A flashlight beam moved across the wall.

Daniel immediately stood.

“They found us.””

Samuel grabbed the folder.

“We need to go.””

They moved again.

But this time, Emily noticed something.

Daniel stayed close.

Not ahead.

Not behind.

Beside them.

Like he was trying to make up for every step he had missed.

They reached the end of the tunnel.

A wooden door opened into an abandoned building outside the town.

The night air hit Emily’s face.

For the first time in hours, she could breathe.

Then she heard a voice.

“Emily.””

She turned.

Margaret stood outside.

Her mother.

Alive.

Safe.

But alone.

Emily froze.

“You escaped.””

Margaret nodded.

“I had help.””

Emily stared.

“Richard?””

Margaret looked down.

“Yes.””

The answer shocked her.

“He helped you?””

“Yes.””

Emily shook her head.

“I don’t understand anything anymore.””

Margaret walked closer.

“I know.””

For once, she didn’t say she was protecting anyone.

She didn’t make excuses.

She just looked tired.

“I owe you the truth.””

Emily stared.

“You owe me more than that.””

Margaret nodded.

“You’re right.””

The old woman looked at Noah.

Then at Emily.

“The night Daniel disappeared…”

Everyone became silent.

“I wasn’t trying to destroy your family.””

Emily said nothing.

“I was trying to save it.””

Samuel looked angry.

“Margaret.””

She looked at him.

“I made a mistake.””

Daniel watched her carefully.

“What mistake?””

Margaret’s eyes filled.

“I trusted the wrong person.””

Emily felt a chill.

“Who?””

Margaret looked toward the road.

Before she answered, headlights appeared in the distance.

A vehicle was approaching.

Everyone tensed.

But Margaret didn’t look afraid.

She looked defeated.

The car stopped.

The door opened.

A man stepped out.

Older.

Calm.

Powerful.

And instantly, Samuel recognized him.

His face went pale.

“No.””

Emily looked at him.

“Who is that?””

Samuel whispered:

“The person who started everything.””

The man walked closer.

And when he spoke, his voice carried across the empty road.

“Hello, Samuel.””

Daniel stepped in front of Emily and Noah.

The stranger smiled.

“You still protect them after all these years.””

Emily felt something cold move through her.

Because there was something familiar about him.

Not his face.

Not his voice.

Something else.

Then the man looked at Noah.

And smiled.

“Finally.””

Noah stepped back.

The man continued.

“The last piece of the family is here.””

Emily grabbed Noah’s hand.

“Stay away from my son.””

The man looked amused.

“Your son?””

He glanced at Daniel.

“Did he never tell you?””

Emily felt her stomach tighten.

“Tell me what?””

The man smiled.

“The boy you spent your life protecting…”

He paused.

“Was never only Daniel’s son.””

Everyone went silent.

Emily looked at Daniel.

Confusion.

Fear.

Betrayal.

Daniel’s face changed.

May you like

Because whatever this man was about to reveal…

He knew it was true.
