Chapter 7: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
Emily stared at him.
Her mind refused to accept what her eyes were seeing.
Daniel.
The man whose funeral she had attended.
The man whose photographs she had kept hidden in a drawer because looking at them hurt too much.
The man whose voice she had listened to only minutes ago through an old recording.
Standing right in front of her.
Alive.
Noah was the first to speak.
“Dad?””
The single word echoed through the underground room.
Daniel’s face changed.
For a moment, he wasn’t the mysterious man connected to secrets and danger.
He was just a father seeing his son for the first time.
His eyes filled with tears.
“Noah.””
Emily stepped between them.
Her hand moved instinctively in front of her son.
“No.””
Daniel stopped.
The pain on his face was immediate.
“Emily.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice trembled.
“You don’t get to say my name.””
The room became silent.
Daniel looked down.
“I know.””
“You’re alive.””
“Yes.””
“You were alive this entire time.””
“Yes.””
She laughed quietly.
But there was no joy in it.
“You let me believe you were dead.””
“I didn’t have a choice.””
The words hit her like a slap.
“Everyone says that.””
Daniel looked at her.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
Her eyes filled.
“You have no idea what it was like.””
She pointed toward Noah.
“You have no idea what it was like raising him alone.””
Daniel looked at his son.
And the guilt on his face was almost unbearable.
“I thought about both of you every day.””
“Thinking isn’t being there.””
“I know.””
“Birthdays.””
“I know.””
“First steps.””
“I know.””
“His first day of school.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I know.””
Emily’s anger broke.
Not because she forgave him.
Because she realized he had been suffering too.
And she hated that.
She hated that she still cared.
Noah looked at Daniel.
“Why didn’t you come back?””
Daniel looked at him.
A father looking at the child he had missed his entire life.
“Because they would have found you.””
“Who?””
Daniel looked around the room.
“Everyone who wanted what I discovered.””
Noah frowned.
“What did you discover?””
Daniel looked at him.
Then at Emily.
“The truth.””
Emily shook her head.
“I’m tired of that word.””
She held up the letter.
“You left messages. You left secrets. You left everyone else to explain your life.””
Daniel nodded.
“You’re right.””
The answer surprised her.
He didn’t defend himself.
He didn’t argue.
He accepted it.
“I should have found a way.””
“Yes.””
“But I failed.””
Emily looked away.
The honesty hurt.
Daniel stepped closer.
“I never stopped loving you.””
She swallowed.
“Love doesn’t erase what happened.””
“I know.””
“Then why are you here now?””
Daniel looked toward the passage.
“Because they found Noah.””
Emily’s expression changed.
“What do you mean?””
Daniel looked at the blinking tracker.
“Because the moment he opened the hidden room, they knew.””
Noah looked confused.
“I opened it?””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
“How?””
Daniel smiled sadly.
“Because I built it for you.””
The room went quiet.
Emily looked at him.
“What?””
“When you were born, I realized something.””
Daniel’s eyes moved to Noah.
“You were the only reason any of this mattered.””
Emily frowned.
“I don’t understand.””
Daniel walked toward the desk.
He picked up one of the old photographs.
“Your family spent generations chasing answers.””
He looked at Noah.
“I spent my life trying to make sure you had a normal one.””
Noah looked down.
“But I’m not normal, am I?””
Daniel immediately shook his head.
“No.””
The answer was firm.
“You are a person. You are my son.””
“But everyone is acting like I’m something else.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Because they’re wrong.””
Emily watched the two of them.
She saw the same thing she had seen years ago.
The reason she fell in love with Daniel.
He cared.
Even when it destroyed him.
A noise came from the passage.
Everyone turned.
Daniel’s expression changed.
“They’re close.””
Evelyn moved toward the door.
“We need another exit.””
Daniel nodded.
“There’s one.””
Emily stared.
“Of course there is.””
Daniel almost smiled.
“This family does have a problem with hidden doors.””
For the first time in hours, a tiny moment of normality appeared.
Then it disappeared.
A loud crash came from behind them.
Someone had broken through.
Daniel grabbed a folder from the desk.
“We go now.””
Emily didn’t move.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at her.
She looked at Daniel.
“There’s something I need to know.””
Daniel nodded.
“What?””
She took a breath.
“Did you really leave because of me?””
Daniel’s face changed.
“No.””
“Then why?””
He looked at her.
“Because someone threatened to hurt you.””
“Who?””
Daniel hesitated.
Emily noticed.
“Who?””
Daniel looked at Margaret’s old photograph sitting on the desk.
Then at Evelyn.
Finally, he answered.
“Someone inside our family.””
Emily felt cold.
“My family?””
Daniel nodded.
“Someone who knew everything.””
“Who?””
Before Daniel could answer, the underground door opened.
Everyone turned.
A figure stood in the doorway.
Not Richard.
Not a stranger.
Someone else.
Someone Emily knew.
The person stepped into the light.
And Emily felt her heart stop.
Because it was the man she had spent years believing was her enemy.
Richard.
But he wasn’t holding a weapon.
He wasn’t angry.
He looked terrified.
“Daniel,” he said.
Everyone froze.
Daniel stared.
“You.””
Emily looked between them.
“You know each other?””
Richard ignored her.
“Listen to me. You don’t have much time.””
Daniel’s voice was cold.
“You came here to finish what you started?””
Richard shook his head.
“No.””
For the first time, Emily saw fear in Richard’s eyes.
Real fear.
“They’re coming.””
Daniel tightened his grip on the folder.
“Who?””
Richard looked at Noah.
And the answer changed everything.
“The people who created this entire operation.””
Emily felt her stomach drop.
“Operation?””
Richard nodded.
“The research. The threats. The disappearances.””
He looked at Samuel’s old guitar lying nearby.
“Everything.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“You said my family was responsible.””
“I was wrong.””
Emily stared.
“You expect me to believe you?””
Richard looked at her.
“No.””
The honesty surprised her.
“I expect you to survive long enough to find out.””
A distant sound echoed.
Cars.
Many cars.
Daniel looked toward the exit.
“How many?””
Richard’s face turned pale.
“Enough.””
Evelyn whispered:
“They’re here.””
Emily grabbed Noah’s hand.
“Who are they?””
Richard looked at the boy.
Then answered:
“The people who have been watching Noah since before he was born.””
The lights above them flickered.
Daniel opened the hidden exit.
But before they could leave, Emily noticed something.
Richard wasn’t following.
He was standing there.
Waiting.
“What are you doing?””
Richard looked at Daniel.
“I owe you a debt.””
Daniel stared.
“You owe me more than that.””
Richard nodded.
“I know.””
Then he looked at Emily.
“I’m sorry.””
The words shocked everyone.
Before anyone could respond, Richard closed the door between them.
Emily heard the lock turn.
“Richard!””
Daniel rushed forward.
But it was too late.
On the other side of the door, footsteps approached.
Richard’s voice echoed faintly.
“Run.””
A moment later, a loud impact shook the entire underground room.
Emily stared at the closed door.
The man who had hunted them had just saved them.
And she finally understood something terrifying.
May you like
There was a bigger enemy.
One that even Richard Hale was afraid of.
