Chapter 5: The Letter That Changed Everything

Nobody moved.

The envelope sat in the coordinator’s hand.

A simple white envelope.

No dramatic writing.

No warning.

Just my name.

Maya Johnson.

Written across the front.

I looked at David.

But he was already near the entrance.

He stopped when he realized everyone was looking at him.

“What is that?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me more than if he had.

“David?””

He turned slowly.

“It’s nothing.””

My eyebrows lifted.

“Nothing?””

The coordinator looked uncomfortable.

“He asked us to give it to you after the conversation.””

“What conversation?””

David didn’t respond.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Maya.””

I looked at him.

“Did you know about this?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

That answer mattered.

Because somehow, I trusted it.

I took the envelope.

My fingers trembled as I opened it.

Inside was a single page.

I expected an apology.

An explanation.

Something that would make everything easier.

Instead, the first sentence made my stomach drop.

“Maya, if you are reading this, then I know things did not go the way I expected.””

I looked up.

David looked away.

I continued reading.

“I wanted to walk you down the aisle because I thought being your biological father gave me that right.””

The room blurred slightly.

“But after speaking with the venue, I realized something uncomfortable.””

I swallowed.

The next line hurt.

“I have been asking for a place in your life that someone else already earned.””

Denise covered her mouth.

Marcus looked down.

I kept reading.

“I thought showing up today would fix the years I missed.””

A tear fell onto the paper.

“But a wedding aisle is only a few feet long.””

I stopped.

The sentence was strange.

Then I read the rest.

“A few feet cannot erase twenty years.””

Nobody spoke.

David finally whispered:

“I wrote that before I came.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

He took a breath.

“Because Marcus called me.””

My eyes widened.

Marcus looked surprised.

“You called him?””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

David nodded.

“He didn’t call to fight.””

He looked at me.

“That’s what bothered me.””

The room went quiet.

“He called and said, ‘Maya deserves the truth from both of us.’”

My chest tightened.

Marcus had called the man who hurt him.

Not to attack him.

To protect me.

David continued.

“He told me I could walk her down the aisle if that was what she wanted.””

Everyone stared at Marcus.

“But he said something else.””

David’s voice became quieter.

“He said, ‘Just don’t confuse being invited back with never having left.’”

Marcus looked away.

The sentence landed like a stone.

I looked at him.

“You said that?””

He nodded.

“I did.””

“Why?””

He looked at me.

“Because I didn’t want your wedding day to be built on a lie.””

I folded the letter.

For the first time, I saw both men clearly.

One was the father who gave me life.

One was the father who gave me himself.

And maybe the hardest truth was that my heart had room for both.

But they didn’t hold the same place.

The coordinator quietly stepped away.

My mother came beside me.

“Baby.””

I looked at her.

“I’m sorry.””

She touched my cheek.

“For what?””

“For not seeing it.””

She smiled sadly.

“Sometimes we don’t notice the people holding us up because we’re too busy looking for the ones who walked away.””

I looked at Marcus.

He smiled faintly.

Then his phone rang.

He checked the screen.

His expression changed.

“What is it?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer immediately.

That worried me.

“Marcus?””

He looked at me.

“It’s the bank.””

My stomach tightened.

“The wedding account?””

He nodded.

He answered.

“Hello?””

Everyone watched his face.

At first, he said nothing.

Then his eyebrows pulled together.

“No, that’s not what we agreed.””

A pause.

He looked toward the statement.

“What?””

My heart started racing.

“What happened?””

He covered the phone.

“The payment account has been frozen.””

My mother gasped.

“Frozen?””

Marcus looked confused.

“Yes.””

He returned to the call.

“Who requested the hold?””

Silence.

His expression slowly changed.

Then he said:

“Can you repeat that?””

The room became still.

Marcus listened for several seconds.

Then he lowered the phone.

His face was unreadable.

“Maya…”

I stepped closer.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“The hold wasn’t requested by me.””

A cold feeling moved through my body.

“Then who?””

Marcus stared at the screen.

Then he said the name.

May you like

And I felt the entire room shift.

“It was requested by David.””
