Chapter 8: The Name On The Paper
The room exploded into whispers.
Someone else.
Those two words changed everything.
David looked confused.
“I didn’t authorize anything else.””
Nobody answered.
The coordinator stared at the screen.
“Are you sure?””
She listened for a few seconds.
Then nodded.
“Yes. I understand.””
She ended the call.
I stepped forward.
“Who was it?””
She hesitated.
That hesitation scared me.
“Please.””
She looked down.
“The request came from someone connected to the wedding.””
My mother stepped closer.
“Connected how?””
The coordinator opened the folder.
“The person was listed as an emergency contact.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“I never added anyone.””
She looked at Marcus.
“Neither did Mr. Carter.””
Everyone looked at David.
He shook his head.
“No.””
Then the coordinator said the name.
And my entire body froze.
“Your father’s fiancée.””
The room went silent.
I blinked.
“My father’s what?””
David’s face changed.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
That was when I knew.
He knew.
“You know her?””
David looked away.
“Maya…”
“No.””
My voice became sharper.
“You know exactly who that is.””
He sighed.
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
He didn’t answer.
That was enough.
My mother looked stunned.
“David.””
He rubbed his face.
“She’s been helping me.””
Helping him.
The words felt wrong.
“How long?””
He was silent.
“How long have you been with someone?””
David looked uncomfortable.
“A few months.””
I laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because I couldn’t believe it.
“A few months.””
He nodded.
“I wanted to tell you after the wedding.””
“Why?””
His answer came quickly.
“Because I wanted today to be about you.””
I looked around the room.
The flowers.
The gifts.
The expensive decorations.
The chaos.
“Is that what this is?””
He frowned.
“What?””
“A day about me?””
Nobody spoke.
I held up the folder.
“Because it feels like everyone came here wanting something.””
David looked hurt.
“That’s not fair.””
“No?””
I looked at Marcus.
“He wanted me to be happy.””
Then at David.
“You wanted your moment.””
I looked at the folder.
“And she wanted access.””
The coordinator looked at me.
“She attempted to change the payment instructions.””
My heart dropped.
“Why?””
“She claimed she was helping organize final expenses.””
I turned to David.
“Did she have permission?””
“No.””
The answer came too quickly.
I stared.
“You’re sure?””
“Yes.””
Then why was she listed?
I didn’t say it.
But everyone wondered.
My mother spoke quietly.
“David, what exactly have you been telling people about this wedding?””
He looked at her.
“What do you mean?””
“Did you tell her she was involved?””
Silence.
David looked down.
That silence was louder than any confession.
Marcus stepped closer to me.
“Maya.””
I looked at him.
“I’m okay.””
But I wasn’t.
Not really.
Because the truth wasn’t just that David had missed years.
It was that he was still trying to enter my life without understanding the damage.
The coordinator checked her phone.
“There’s another update.””
Everyone groaned.
“What now?””
She looked nervous.
“The payment request was denied.””
I exhaled.
“Good.””
Then she shook her head.
“That’s not the issue.””
“What is?””
She looked at me.
“The person who submitted it wasn’t trying to take the money.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“Then what?””
“She was trying to change the ownership information.””
I felt a chill.
“Ownership?””
The coordinator nodded.
“Yes.””
She turned the folder around.
A new page appeared.
A request form.
My eyes moved across it.
And then I saw it.
A signature.
A name.
My father’s fiancée had requested that the wedding account be transferred into a different legal name.
I looked at David.
“Why would she do this?””
He didn’t answer.
I walked closer.
“Why?””
His face became pale.
“I don’t know.””
Marcus looked at the paper.
Then at David.
“Ask yourself if you don’t know.””
David looked angry.
“Are you accusing me?””
“No.””
Marcus’s voice stayed calm.
“I’m asking if you were being used.””
That was when David went quiet.
Because maybe, for the first time, he considered it.
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From an unknown number.
I opened it.
One sentence appeared.
“Your father isn’t the only person who wants something from your wedding.””
My hands went cold.
A second message arrived.
“Ask him what happened before he came back into your life.””
I looked up.
Everyone was watching me.
“What is it?”” Marcus asked.
I didn’t answer.
Because another message appeared.
This one included a photo.
A photo of David.
And a woman I had never seen before.
Standing outside a lawyer’s office.
The date was from three months earlier.
The same month David suddenly contacted me.
I looked at the screen.
May you like
And realized my wedding wasn’t just hiding one secret.
It was hiding the reason my father came back.
