Chapter 6: The Man Behind the Hold

For a moment, nobody understood.

Then everyone did.

David’s face changed.

“Maya, wait.””

I turned toward him.

“Wait?””

My voice came out quieter than I expected.

“You froze the wedding account?””

He stepped forward.

“It’s not what you think.””

That sentence.

I hated that sentence.

Because people only said it when it was exactly what it looked like.

Marcus ended the call.

His expression was controlled, but I could see the anger underneath.

Not explosive anger.

The kind that came from being tired.

“You requested a hold on money you didn’t contribute.””

David looked at him.

“I was trying to protect her.””

I stared.

“Protect me from what?””

David hesitated.

“The situation.””

“What situation?””

He looked around.

“The fact that your stepfather is using money to control everyone.””

I almost laughed.

But there was nothing funny about it.

“Using money?””

I held up the statement.

“He paid for my wedding.””

David shook his head.

“That’s exactly my point.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“That is your point.””

Everyone went silent.

David looked hurt.

“Maya.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You keep saying he’s controlling me because he helped me.””

I pointed at the statement.

“But he gave me a choice.””

David looked away.

I continued.

“You froze the account because you didn’t like my choice.””

That was the first time he had no answer.

Marcus looked at me.

Not with pride.

With concern.

Because he knew how much this hurt.

David lowered his voice.

“I was trying to make sure you weren’t making a mistake.””

I stared at him.

“You mean choosing Marcus?””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

I looked down.

A strange calm came over me.

Because the confusion was finally gone.

The wedding wasn’t falling apart.

The illusion was.

I walked toward the gift table.

The same table where Marcus and I had stood hours earlier.

The same place where I had watched his heart break.

I touched the flowers.

“You know what hurts?””

Nobody answered.

I looked at David.

“I spent my whole life wondering why you weren’t there.””

His face softened.

“But today, when you finally came back, I realized something.””

I looked at Marcus.

“Someone else had already been there.””

David’s eyes filled slightly.

“I’m still your father.””

I nodded.

“I know.””

The words surprised him.

“I’m not erasing you.””

A small flicker of hope crossed his face.

Then I continued.

“But I’m done pretending you can step into a role someone else spent twenty years earning.””

Silence.

Marcus looked away.

I knew he was trying not to cry.

Then the venue coordinator returned.

She held a phone.

“Maya?””

I turned.

“Yes?””

She looked nervous.

“There’s another issue.””

My heart sank.

“What now?””

She looked at the screen.

“The bank needs confirmation from the person who originally funded the wedding.””

She looked at Marcus.

“He has to decide whether the payment continues.””

The room went quiet.

Everyone looked at him.

I shook my head immediately.

“No.””

Marcus looked at me.

“No?””

I stepped closer.

“This is not your burden anymore.””

His expression softened.

“Maya…”

“No.””

I swallowed.

“You already gave enough.””

Marcus looked down.

Then he said something quietly.

“I need you to understand something.””

I waited.

“The money was never the gift.””

I frowned.

“What do you mean?””

He looked directly at me.

“The wedding was never what I was paying for.””

The room went silent.

“Then what was?””

His eyes moved to the aisle.

The empty aisle where I had planned to walk.

“You.””

My breath caught.

“I wanted you to have one day where you didn’t have to worry.””

A tear slipped down my cheek.

“Marcus…”

He shook his head.

“No, listen.””

His voice became softer.

“I didn’t pay because I wanted you to owe me.””

He looked at the wedding decorations.

“I paid because I wanted you to know someone believed you deserved happiness.””

Nobody spoke.

Then his phone rang again.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

This time, it wasn’t confusion.

It was concern.

He answered.

“Hello?””

A few seconds passed.

Then he looked at me.

“Maya…”

My heart dropped.

“What?””

He slowly lowered the phone.

“The bank approved the release.””

Everyone exhaled.

Then he added:

“But there’s one problem.””

The room went still again.

“What problem?””

Marcus looked toward David.

Then back at me.

“The person who requested the hold wasn’t just trying to stop the payment.””

He paused.

“He was trying to access the wedding account.””

I stared.

“Why?””

Marcus looked at the phone screen.

Because the answer was written there.

And when he said the next words…

I realized my wedding had a secret nobody saw coming.

“David wasn’t trying to cancel the wedding.””

May you like

He looked at me.

“He was trying to take control of it.””
