Chapter 5: The Secret My Father Buried

The paper felt heavier than it should have.

It was only a single page.

A few sentences.

A few lines written in my mother’s handwriting.

But holding it felt like holding a piece of the past that everyone had fought to keep away from me.

*For Lily. Read alone.*

I stared at those words.

My mother had known.

She had known there might come a day when I would find this.

She had planned for a moment when I would be old enough to understand.

But what scared me most was the warning Marcus had written beneath it.

*Vanessa is not the only person Claire was afraid of.*

I looked around the kitchen.

At my father.

At Vanessa.

At Marcus.

One of them had lied to me.

Maybe all of them had.

“Lily,” Dad said quietly.

I looked up.

His face was broken.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Just broken.

“I need you to understand something.””

I held the letter closer.

“What?””

“I loved your mother.””

The words hurt because I believed him.

That was the worst part.

I believed him.

“But you didn’t believe her,” I said.

His eyes dropped.

“No.””

The honesty surprised me.

He looked at the floor.

“I didn’t.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

He shook his head.

“I’m done protecting everyone.””

The room went silent.

Dad walked toward the kitchen table and sat down.

For the first time, he looked smaller.

Like the secrets had finally become too heavy to carry.

“When Claire told me something was wrong, I thought she was overwhelmed.””

I listened.

“I thought grief, stress, and everything happening at work were making her suspicious.””

His voice cracked.

“She kept telling me someone was changing things behind my back.””

Marcus nodded.

“She was right.””

Dad looked at him.

“I know that now.””

He covered his face with his hands.

“But I didn’t know then.””

Nobody spoke.

I wanted to be angry.

I wanted to blame him.

But I could see it.

The regret.

The kind that doesn’t disappear.

The kind that wakes you up at night.

“What happened the night she died?”” I asked.

Dad slowly looked at me.

The question seemed to hurt him more than anything else.

“I got a call.””

“From who?””

He hesitated.

That hesitation told me everything.

“Your mother.””

I swallowed.

“You said she called you.””

“Yes.””

“And?””

Dad looked at the window.

“I was at work.””

He laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

“I remember looking at my phone and thinking, ‘I’ll call her back in ten minutes.’”

His eyes filled.

“I never got those ten minutes.””

The kitchen became quiet.

“What did she say?””

Dad took a deep breath.

“She said she found proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“That someone was using my company to move money.””

Marcus placed another document on the table.

“She found the transfers.””

Dad nodded.

“She said she was scared.””

“Why didn’t you go home?””

His jaw tightened.

“Because Vanessa was there.””

The room froze.

I looked at Vanessa.

She immediately shook her head.

“No.””

Dad looked at her.

“I told you Claire was upset.””

“Yes.””

“You said you would talk to her.””

“Yes.””

“But you never told me why you were there.””

Vanessa looked away.

“I was helping her.””

Marcus gave a bitter laugh.

“No, you weren’t.””

Vanessa glared at him.

“You don’t know what happened.””

“I know exactly what happened.””

Dad stood up.

“What happened?””

Nobody answered.

Marcus looked at me.

“Your mother found out Vanessa had access to company records.””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“I had access because Daniel trusted me.””

Marcus nodded.

“That’s exactly why it worked.””

Dad stared at her.

“I trusted you.””

“I never wanted this.””

“But you did it.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

And for a moment, she looked almost human.

“I made one mistake.””

Marcus shook his head.

“One?””

She looked at him.

“You don’t understand.””

“No,” Marcus said.

“I understand perfectly.””

He opened the folder again.

“There were years of transfers.””

Dad looked through the papers.

His hands shook.

“How much?””

Marcus didn’t answer immediately.

“Enough to destroy the company.””

Dad sat back down.

I watched his face.

The man who had always seemed impossible to break was finally breaking.

But then something happened.

Something that made me realize the truth was still incomplete.

Dad looked at Marcus.

“How did you know?””

Marcus froze.

A small silence passed.

Dad noticed.

“How did you know about the transfers?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

My heart sank.

Because suddenly there was another person with secrets.

“Marcus?””

He sighed.

“I helped Claire investigate.””

“When?””

“Before she died.””

Dad stared at him.

“You knew.””

“I knew she was in danger.””

“And you didn’t tell me?””

“I tried.””

“When?””

Marcus looked away.

“She told me not to.””

Dad stood.

“My wife was afraid someone would hurt her, and you kept quiet?””

“I was trying to protect her.””

“You failed.””

The words were harsh.

But Marcus accepted them.

Because he knew.

We all knew.

Someone had failed Claire.

Maybe everyone had.

I looked down at my mother’s letter.

The words waiting inside suddenly felt terrifying.

“What if she knew she wouldn’t survive?””

Nobody answered.

Because everyone knew that was possible.

I took a deep breath.

“I’m going to read it.””

Dad looked at me.

“Lily…”

“My mom wrote it for me.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“And someone spent three years trying to make sure I never saw it.””

Vanessa looked down.

She didn’t deny it.

That hurt more.

I unfolded the page.

The first line made my chest tighten.

*My sweet Lily,*

I stopped.

Because I could hear her voice.

Not exactly.

But enough.

The way she used to say my name when I was scared.

I kept reading.

*If you are reading this, then I failed to protect you from the truth. I am sorry. But hiding the truth forever would only allow the person who hurt our family to win.*

I looked up.

Dad closed his eyes.

I continued.

*There is something you need to know about the night I disappeared.*

My breathing stopped.

Not died.

Not passed away.

Disappeared.

The word felt intentional.

*I did not leave because I wanted to. I left because someone made sure I could not come home.*

A cold feeling spread through me.

I looked at Dad.

He looked just as shocked.

Even Vanessa.

Even Marcus.

Nobody knew that.

Or they were pretending.

*Lily, there is one person who helped me escape. Someone you have known your entire life. Someone you trust.*

My fingers tightened.

Someone I knew.

Someone I trusted.

I read the next sentence.

And my entire body went still.

*But before you blame them, remember this: they saved my life.*

I looked at Marcus.

Then Dad.

Then Vanessa.

Who could it be?

Who had been helping my mother?

The letter continued.

*The person who knows where I am now is the same person who can prove what happened.*

My heart started racing.

Because the next line was only a name.

A name that none of us expected.

A name that made my father stand up.

*Lily, find Grandma Evelyn.*

I looked at Dad.

“Grandma?””

His face changed.

“What?””

“Mom wrote Grandma Evelyn’s name.””

The silence that followed was terrifying.

Because I had never met Grandma Evelyn.

Nobody talked about her.

Not once.

Dad slowly sat down.

“She’s been dead for years.””

I looked at the letter.

My hands went cold.

Because my mother had written the name of a woman my father said was dead.

And underneath that sentence was one final message.

One that made my father drop into the chair.

*Your father was told she died. He was never shown proof.*

Nobody spoke.

Not even Vanessa.

Then Marcus’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed instantly.

“What is it?”” Dad asked.

Marcus didn’t answer.

He just turned the phone around.

There was a message.

From an unknown number.

One sentence.

*Stop digging, or Lily will learn why Claire really ran away.*

I stared at the screen.

Because the message wasn’t a warning.

It was a threat.

And whoever sent it knew my name.

They knew I had the letter.

They knew we were searching.

Marcus looked at all of us.

May you like

Then whispered the words that made the room go silent.

“They’re still watching this house.””
