Chapter 6: The Woman Who Was Never Buried

The house had never felt so unsafe.

It was the same place I had grown up in.

The same walls.

The same floors.

The same kitchen where my mother used to dance while cooking dinner.

But now every corner felt like it was hiding something.

Someone was watching us.

Someone knew we had found the letter.

Someone knew my name.

Dad locked the front door.

Then the back door.

Then he checked every window.

I watched him from the hallway.

For the first time, my father looked afraid of his own home.

“Daniel,” Marcus said quietly.

Dad turned around.

“What?””

“You need to hear something before we do anything else.””

Dad stared at him.

“I’m already hearing things I wish I never knew.””

Marcus looked at me.

Then lowered his voice.

“Claire might still be alive.””

The words landed harder than the fire.

Even though I had already seen the picture.

Even though the letter hinted at it.

Hearing someone say it made it real.

My mother.

Alive.

Somewhere.

Waiting.

I covered my mouth.

“She’s alive?””

Nobody answered immediately.

That was the answer.

Nobody knew.

Marcus sat down at the dining table.

“I don’t know if she’s alive now.””

My heart dropped.

“But I know she was alive after the accident.””

Dad grabbed the chair.

“Explain.””

Marcus looked at him.

“The night Claire disappeared, I found her car.””

Dad frowned.

“You found the car?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Marcus looked away.

“Because the car wasn’t empty.””

The room became silent.

“What do you mean?””

Marcus took a slow breath.

“I mean Claire was inside.””

My hand flew to my mouth.

Dad went completely still.

“What?””

“She was hurt.””

Marcus’s voice became quieter.

“But she was alive.””

The air disappeared from my lungs.

I had spent years imagining my mother’s final moments.

I imagined her scared.

I imagined her alone.

I imagined her calling my name.

But now I learned something impossible.

She had survived.

At least for a while.

“What happened?”” Dad asked.

Marcus looked at the floor.

“I got her out.””

“Out of the car?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because someone was coming.””

Dad stared.

“Who?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

Everyone knew.

Vanessa.

But Marcus shook his head.

“Not just Vanessa.””

The room went quiet.

Again.

That phrase.

Not just Vanessa.

My mother had been afraid of more than one person.

I looked at the letter.

The answer was somewhere inside those pages.

“Where did you take her?”” Dad asked.

Marcus rubbed his hands together.

“She couldn’t stay.””

“Why?””

“Because whoever caused the accident thought she was dead.””

Dad’s eyes widened.

“And you let them believe that?””

Marcus looked at him.

“Yes.””

The pain in Dad’s face was immediate.

“You let me bury my wife.””

“I let you believe she was gone because it kept you alive too.””

Dad stood up.

“You don’t get to decide that.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

Dad’s voice shook.

“You have no idea what those years were like.””

Marcus looked at him.

“I know exactly what they were like.””

“Then why?””

“Because Claire asked me to.””

That stopped him.

Dad stared.

“She asked you?””

Marcus nodded.

“She told me if anyone knew she survived, the people hunting her would come after Lily.””

My name.

Again.

Everything came back to me.

My mother wasn’t just protecting herself.

She was protecting me.

Dad sat down slowly.

“She chose to disappear.””

Marcus nodded.

“She chose to become someone the world couldn’t find.””

I felt tears falling before I realized it.

“She left me.””

My voice was quiet.

Everyone looked at me.

“She knew I would think she was dead.””

Marcus’s face softened.

“She hated it.””

“That doesn’t make it okay.””

“No.””

He didn’t argue.

“She knew that.””

I wiped my tears.

“She could have come back.””

Marcus looked at the letter.

“She wanted to.””

“Then why didn’t she?””

Nobody answered.

And that silence hurt more than anything.

Because I realized something.

The truth wasn’t simple.

There wasn’t one villain.

One mistake.

One moment.

There were layers.

People making choices.

People hurting each other.

People trying to protect someone and causing pain instead.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“She was never going to come back.””

Everyone turned.

Vanessa stood near the kitchen doorway.

Her face was pale.

“You know where she is.””

Dad stared at her.

“What did you say?””

Vanessa looked at Marcus.

“You know where Claire went.””

Marcus didn’t deny it.

“You do too.””

My heart started racing.

Dad looked between them.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“She contacted me.””

Nobody moved.

“What?””

Dad’s voice was barely a whisper.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“After the accident.””

The room exploded.

“You knew she was alive?””

Dad’s voice shook the walls.

Vanessa started crying.

“I didn’t know at first.””

“You just said she contacted you.””

“She did.””

“And you said nothing?””

“I couldn’t.””

“Couldn’t?””

Dad stepped closer.

“You let me mourn her.””

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

Vanessa looked at me.

That answer was enough.

“Of losing everything.””

The words were quiet.

But they were cruel.

Because they weren’t about Claire.

They weren’t about me.

They were about Vanessa.

Dad stared at her.

“What did Claire say to you?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“Tell me.””

“She wanted me to stop.””

“Stop what?””

Vanessa looked at the table.

“The money.””

Dad froze.

Marcus closed his eyes.

I felt sick.

Vanessa continued.

“She knew.””

“About the company?””

“Yes.””

“About you?””

She nodded.

“I made a mistake.””

Dad laughed bitterly.

“A mistake?””

“I was desperate.””

“For what?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“For a life I thought I deserved.””

Nobody spoke.

She wiped her face.

“I thought I could fix it before anyone noticed.””

“You stole from me.””

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked everyone.

“I did.””

Dad looked away.

“But Claire found out.””

“Yes.””

“And the accident?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

“I didn’t cause the accident.””

Marcus watched her carefully.

“But you know who did.””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

And that was the answer.

My heart pounded.

“Who?””

Vanessa looked at me.

And something in her expression changed.

She wasn’t looking at me like an enemy.

She was looking at me like she was seeing my mother.

“The person who caused the accident wasn’t trying to kill Claire.””

Everyone froze.

“What?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“They were trying to scare her.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

Vanessa looked at Dad.

“But they didn’t know Claire survived.””

The room went silent.

Dad whispered:

“Who?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Then stopped.

Her phone rang.

Everyone jumped.

She looked at the screen.

Her face changed.

“What is it?”” Dad asked.

She didn’t answer.

She slowly turned the phone around.

A video message.

From an unknown number.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Don’t open it.””

But Vanessa already had.

The screen showed a dark image.

A person sitting in a car.

The voice was distorted.

But the words were clear.

“Vanessa, you have failed.””

Her face went white.

The voice continued.

“You were supposed to destroy the evidence.””

Nobody breathed.

“You were supposed to make Lily believe her mother abandoned her.””

I felt cold.

The person knew everything.

The voice continued.

“But now she knows.””

The video paused.

Then the final words appeared.

A message typed across the screen.

*Bring me the letter, or I tell Lily why Claire really disappeared.*

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Dad looked at Vanessa.

“Who is that?””

Vanessa stared at the black screen.

And for the first time…

She looked more afraid of someone else than she was of us.

“It’s the person who helped me.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Who?””

Vanessa slowly looked up.

Her voice barely came out.

“The person Claire trusted most.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“Who?””

Vanessa looked at Dad.

Then at me.

May you like

And whispered:

“Your grandfather.””
