Chapter 8: The Night My Father Lied

The question stayed in the room long after the call ended.

*Where was Daniel the night Claire disappeared?*

Nobody said anything.

Nobody needed to.

The silence itself was an answer.

I looked at my father.

The man who had always been my hero.

The man who taught me how to ride a bike.

The man who sat beside my bed when I had nightmares.

The man who cried at my mother’s funeral.

Now I wondered if I had ever really known him.

“Dad?””

He didn’t look at me.

That scared me more than anything.

Because my father always looked at me.

Even when he was angry.

Even when he was tired.

Even when he didn’t know what to say.

But now?

He looked away.

“Tell me,” I whispered.

His shoulders lowered.

“Lily…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“I need you to tell me.””

Vanessa stood silently near the kitchen counter.

Marcus watched my father carefully.

Everyone was waiting.

Dad sat down slowly.

“I was at the office.””

The answer came too quickly.

Marcus immediately shook his head.

“No.””

Dad looked at him.

“What?””

“You weren’t.””

My father’s expression changed.

“How would you know?””

“Because Claire called me from your office.””

The room froze.

I looked at Dad.

“What?””

Marcus took a breath.

“The night she disappeared, Claire called me.””

Dad looked confused.

“She called you?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because she asked me not to.””

Dad stood up.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

His voice cracked.

“Everyone knew something except me.””

Marcus didn’t respond.

Because it was true.

My father was surrounded by secrets.

And somehow, he was still the person everyone was protecting.

“What did Mom say?”” I asked.

Marcus looked at me.

“She said she found something.””

“The company records?””

“Yes.””

“Anything else?””

His eyes moved toward Dad.

Then back to me.

“She said someone close to your father knew.””

My heart sank.

Someone close to him.

Again.

I looked at Dad.

“Who?””

He didn’t answer.

“Dad.””

His face tightened.

“I don’t know.””

But something about his voice changed.

Not a lie.

Not exactly.

A memory.

“You do know something.””

He closed his eyes.

“Lily…”

“Please.””

The word came out smaller than I wanted.

“I need the truth.””

For a long moment, he said nothing.

Then he whispered:

“Your mother wasn’t alone that night.””

The room became silent.

“What?””

Dad looked down.

“She was meeting someone.””

“Who?””

He swallowed.

“I don’t know.””

Marcus frowned.

“You’re lying.””

Dad looked at him.

“I’m not.””

“You know who she was meeting.””

“I knew she was meeting someone.””

“Who?””

Dad’s hands tightened.

“My father.””

Nobody moved.

The air disappeared.

“Grandpa Robert?””

Dad nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

I felt cold.

“But you said he was dead.””

“I thought he was.””

The answer hurt.

Because for the first time, I understood something.

My father wasn’t hiding one secret.

He was hiding years of confusion.

“He called me that night,” Dad continued.

“When?””

“After Claire left.””

“Why?””

Dad looked at the floor.

“He told me Claire was unstable.””

My stomach turned.

“He said she was making accusations.””

“About him?””

“Yes.””

Marcus shook his head.

“He manipulated you.””

Dad looked at him.

“I know.””

“When did you find out?””

“After Claire disappeared.””

Nobody spoke.

I stepped closer.

“What did you do?””

Dad’s eyes filled.

“I went looking for her.””

My heart broke.

“Then why did everyone think you didn’t?””

“Because someone stopped me.””

“Who?””

Dad looked at Vanessa.

Everyone turned.

Vanessa’s face changed.

“No.””

Dad stared at her.

“You knew.””

She shook her head.

“I didn’t know everything.””

“But you knew enough.””

Vanessa looked away.

Dad’s voice became painful.

“The morning after Claire disappeared, you came to my house.””

Vanessa said nothing.

“You told me Claire left because she was afraid.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I was trying to help.””

“No.””

Dad shook his head.

“You were trying to control the story.””

Tears rolled down Vanessa’s face.

“I was scared.””

“Everyone was scared.””

The words were sharp.

“But you all made choices.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“I didn’t know she survived.””

I stared at her.

“Did you want her dead?””

Her face collapsed.

“No.””

The answer was immediate.

“No, Lily.””

“Then why did you burn her pictures?””

She couldn’t answer.

Again.

The silence was enough.

I turned away.

I couldn’t look at her.

Marcus walked toward the window.

“We need to leave.””

Dad looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because Robert knows we have the letter.””

“He already knew.””

“Yes.””

Marcus looked outside.

“And now he knows where we are.””

A sound came from upstairs.

A small sound.

Like something falling.

Everyone stopped.

The house went completely still.

Dad looked toward the ceiling.

“Did anyone come in?””

Nobody answered.

My heart started beating faster.

Marcus whispered:

“Stay here.””

He moved toward the stairs.

Dad followed.

“No.””

Marcus looked at him.

“I’m not letting you go alone.””

I watched them disappear upstairs.

Vanessa stayed beside me.

For the first time, we were alone.

The woman who had destroyed my mother’s pictures.

The woman who had lied to me.

The woman who somehow looked more broken than ever.

“You knew she was alive,” I said.

Vanessa looked down.

“I suspected.””

“That’s not an answer.””

She sighed.

“No.””

I waited.

She looked at me.

“I didn’t know.””

“Then what did you know?””

Her eyes filled.

“I knew Claire wanted to expose everything.””

“Everything?””

“Me. Robert. The company.””

“And Dad?””

Vanessa looked away.

“Especially your father.””

I felt confused.

“What does that mean?””

She whispered:

“Your father wasn’t the person Claire was afraid of.””

I stared.

“Then who?””

Before she could answer, a loud crash came from upstairs.

We both jumped.

Dad shouted:

“Marcus!””

I ran toward the stairs.

Vanessa grabbed my arm.

“Wait.””

I pulled away.

“No.””

I ran upstairs.

The hallway was dark.

One bedroom door was open.

My mother’s old room.

A room nobody had entered in years.

Dad stood inside.

Marcus was holding something.

A small wooden box.

My mother’s jewelry box.

But that wasn’t what scared me.

It was the writing on top.

A name.

Not mine.

Not my mother’s.

*Daniel.*

Dad stared at it.

“I’ve never seen that before.””

Marcus opened the box.

Inside was a stack of papers.

And one photograph.

Dad picked it up.

His face changed instantly.

“What?””

He handed it to me.

I looked.

It was a picture of my mother.

Standing beside someone.

Someone I knew.

Someone who had been in our home every day.

Someone who had claimed to love our family.

I looked at the picture.

Then at my father.

“What is this?””

Nobody answered.

Because the person standing beside my mother was impossible.

It was Vanessa.

But the date on the back was before Vanessa ever met Dad.

Before she entered our lives.

Before the wedding.

Before everything.

And beneath the date was a message written by my mother.

*I found out who Vanessa really is.*

My hands went numb.

Dad looked at Vanessa.

Slowly.

Like he was seeing her for the first time.

“Who are you?””

Vanessa’s face turned pale.

May you like

And before she could answer…

the lights in the entire house went out.
