Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Chair

The words stayed in Ethan’s mind long after Harrison left.

The reason this salon was never supposed to be here in the first place.

It was the kind of sentence that should have sounded impossible.

But after watching five executives walk into a rainy little salon and treat an old man like the most important person in the room, Ethan no longer knew what was impossible.

He stood behind the reception desk, still holding the black-and-gold card.

It felt heavier now.

Not because of the metal.

Because of what it represented.

Power.

Trust.

A responsibility he never asked for.

Melissa stared at him from across the room.

Her face had lost all its confidence.

“Ethan.””

He looked up.

“Yes?””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

For once, Melissa had no perfect response.

Derek was the one who finally spoke.

“This is insane.””

Ethan placed the card on the counter.

“Yeah.””

Derek looked at him.

“You believe him?””

Ethan looked toward the door where Harrison had disappeared.

“I don’t know what I believe.””

“That guy says you’re going to own this place tomorrow.””

“I heard him.””

Derek laughed nervously.

“You actually think that’s happening?””

Ethan didn’t answer.

Because a small part of him did.

Not because he wanted the salon.

Not because he dreamed of being rich.

But because of the way Harrison had looked at him.

Like he had already decided.

Like Ethan was capable of something Ethan himself had never considered.

The next morning, Ethan arrived thirty minutes early.

He expected the same old place.

The same cracked leather chairs.

The same faded posters on the walls.

The same coffee machine that made a strange clicking sound before every cup.

But something was different.

A black sedan was parked outside.

And two people in suits were waiting near the entrance.

Ethan stopped walking.

One of them stepped forward.

“Ethan Carter?””

He nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

The woman held out her hand.

“I’m Olivia Grant. Legal counsel for Vale Luxury Group.””

Ethan stared at her hand before shaking it.

“Legal counsel?””

“Yes.””

“That sounds serious.””

Olivia gave a small smile.

“It usually is.””

She handed him a thick folder.

“Mr. Vale requested that I deliver this personally.””

Ethan looked at the folder.

His name was printed on the front.

*Transfer Agreement — Mercer Street Flagship Salon.*

His stomach tightened.

“This is real?””

Olivia looked surprised.

“You thought it wasn’t?””

“I thought maybe yesterday was some kind of strange dream.””

“It wasn’t.””

She glanced toward the salon.

“May we go inside?””

Ethan unlocked the door.

The lights flickered on.

The empty salon looked completely different without customers.

Quiet.

Almost lonely.

Olivia placed the folder on the counter.

“Mr. Vale asked me to explain something before you make any decisions.””

Ethan frowned.

“Decisions?””

“Yes.””

“What decisions?””

She looked around.

“This salon is only one piece.””

Ethan felt his heartbeat increase.

“What do you mean?””

Olivia opened the folder.

“Vale Luxury Group owns hundreds of properties. Restaurants. Hotels. Retail locations.””

“I know.””

“This salon chain was one of Harrison Vale’s earliest investments.””

Ethan leaned against the counter.

“Why?””

Olivia looked at the barber chairs.

“Because before Harrison became a billionaire, he was a barber.””

Ethan froze.

“What?””

She nodded.

“Forty-five years ago, he rented a small shop two streets from here. One chair. One mirror. One customer at a time.””

Ethan looked at the chair where Harrison had sat.

“That doesn’t sound like him.””

“It’s exactly like him.””

Olivia turned a page.

“He believed a barber shop was one of the few places where strangers became human to each other.””

Ethan was quiet.

Then he remembered Harrison’s words.

You gave me dignity.

Olivia continued.

“He built Vale Luxury Group later. But he always kept the salons because he wanted them to represent the beginning.””

“So what happened?””

Her expression changed.

“The company changed.””

A cold feeling moved through Ethan.

“What does that mean?””

“It means success created distance.””

Olivia closed the folder.

“Some executives started caring more about numbers than people.””

Ethan looked away.

He thought about Melissa pushing Harrison’s money back.

He thought about Derek laughing.

He thought about how quickly everyone’s behavior changed after they learned Harrison’s name.

“Why me?””

Olivia studied him.

“Mr. Vale answered that question.””

“What did he say?””

She smiled slightly.

“He said, ‘Because Ethan treated me like I mattered before he knew I did.’”

The words hit harder than Ethan expected.

He looked down.

“I didn’t do anything special.””

“That’s why he chose you.””

Before Ethan could respond, the salon door opened.

Melissa walked in.

She looked exhausted.

Her makeup was lighter than usual.

For the first time since Ethan had known her, she looked nervous.

“Can I talk to you?””

Ethan looked at Olivia.

The lawyer nodded.

“I’ll give you a few minutes.””

Melissa waited until Olivia stepped away.

Then she whispered:

“I need you to understand something.””

Ethan folded his arms.

“Okay.””

“I didn’t know who he was.””

“I know.””

“I mean it.””

“Melissa.””

Her eyes became wet.

“I’m serious.””

Ethan didn’t respond.

She looked around the salon.

“I’ve worked here for six years.””

“And?””

“And I thought I understood this business.””

She swallowed.

“I thought people who couldn’t afford our prices didn’t belong here.””

Ethan looked at her.

“That’s what you said.””

“I know.””

The honesty surprised him.

Melissa took a breath.

“I was wrong.””

Silence filled the room.

Ethan had expected an excuse.

A defense.

Anything except that.

“Why are you telling me this?””

Her eyes moved toward the folder.

“Because if you really become the owner…”

She hesitated.

“I don’t know what happens to me.””

Ethan studied her face.

This was the same person who had laughed yesterday.

The same person who had looked at Harrison like he was an inconvenience.

But now she looked afraid.

Not angry.

Afraid.

“I’m not Harrison,” Ethan said.

Melissa nodded.

“I know.””

“I’m not going to punish everyone.””

Her shoulders relaxed slightly.

“But?””

Ethan looked toward the salon chairs.

“But I’m also not going to let this place become what it was yesterday.””

Melissa lowered her eyes.

“I understand.””

The door opened again.

This time, it was Daniel.

He walked in carrying a tablet.

“Ethan.””

Ethan turned.

“Daniel, right?””

Daniel nodded.

“I have something to show you.””

He placed the tablet on the counter.

A video was already open.

Ethan pressed play.

The screen showed security footage from the previous day.

The salon entrance.

Harrison walking in.

Melissa speaking.

The employees laughing.

Ethan watched silently.

Then the video changed.

A different angle.

A hallway.

A man in a suit standing outside the salon.

Ethan frowned.

“Who is that?””

Daniel’s expression became serious.

“That’s why I’m here.””

The man in the video was holding a phone.

Listening.

Watching.

Recording.

Ethan looked at Daniel.

“What’s happening?””

Daniel paused.

“We discovered someone else knew Harrison was visiting this location.””

“Who?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“A person who does not want you running this salon.””

Ethan stared at the screen.

The man turned slightly.

The camera caught his face.

Ethan didn’t recognize him.

But Daniel did.

His expression changed immediately.

“No.””

Ethan looked at him.

“What?””

Daniel stepped closer to the screen.

“That’s impossible.””

“Who is he?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Instead, he whispered a name.

A name that made the room suddenly feel much colder.

“Adrian Vale.””

Ethan frowned.

“Vale?””

Daniel nodded.

“Harrison’s son.””

The tablet screen went black.

And at that exact moment, Ethan’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

“Hello?””

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then a man’s voice came through.

Calm.

Cold.

“You don’t know me, Ethan.””

Ethan stood still.

“But you’re sitting in my father’s chair.””

His grip tightened around the phone.

“Who is this?””

A pause.

Then the voice replied:

“My name is Adrian Vale.””

Ethan looked at Daniel.

The executive had gone pale.

Adrian continued.

“And I’m calling to tell you one thing.””

The salon was silent.

“What?””

The voice lowered.

“Your first day as owner will also be your last.””

May you like

The call ended.

And on the other side of the glass window, a black car slowly pulled up outside the salon.
