Chapter 9: The Agreement That Was Never Meant to Be Found

Ethan didn’t move.

He couldn’t.

The message on his phone sat there like a weapon.

*Ask Harrison why your mother was the one who signed your father’s death agreement.*

Every word felt impossible.

His mother.

His father.

Harrison.

All connected by a document Ethan had never heard of.

A death agreement.

The phrase itself sounded like something from a nightmare.

Slowly, Ethan lifted his eyes.

“Tell me.””

Harrison looked away.

That was enough.

Ethan’s voice hardened.

“Tell me now.””

The old man remained silent.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Harrison.””

But Harrison raised a hand.

“No.””

He looked at Ethan.

“He deserves the truth.””

The room became still.

Ethan waited.

Harrison walked toward the window.

For a moment, he simply watched the rain.

Then he spoke.

“Thirty years ago, after Michael discovered the financial records, he realized something.””

“What?””

“That the person stealing from Vale wasn’t trying to take money.””

Ethan frowned.

“Then what were they trying to take?””

“Control.””

The answer came quietly.

“They were building a way to legally take over everything.””

Rachel’s face tightened.

“The ownership transfer.””

Harrison nodded.

“Yes.””

Ethan looked at the papers.

“The agreement.””

“Yes.””

“What did my father do?””

Harrison turned.

“He created a protection clause.””

“What kind?””

“A clause that would stop anyone from gaining complete control of the company through manipulation.””

Ethan crossed his arms.

“And my mother signed it?””

Harrison hesitated.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because she was the only person Michael trusted to protect it.””

Ethan stared.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It will.””

Harrison walked back to the barber chair.

“Your father knew he was being watched.””

“By who?””

“We still don’t know.””

Ethan shook his head.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Harrison’s expression became painful.

“Because we never found out.””

“Then why did Adrian say my mother signed my father’s death agreement?””

Harrison looked down.

“Because he’s twisting the truth.””

“Explain.””

Harrison took a breath.

“The document was not a death agreement.””

“Then what was it?””

“A safety agreement.””

Ethan waited.

“Michael wrote it because he believed something might happen to him.””

The room went quiet.

“He asked Claire to sign because he wanted someone outside the company to have control if he disappeared.””

Ethan’s eyes narrowed.

“If he disappeared?””

“Yes.””

“Not if he died?””

Harrison didn’t answer.

Ethan noticed.

“What did the agreement say?””

Harrison looked at Rachel.

She reached into her bag.

Another envelope.

Another secret.

She handed it to Ethan.

“This is the original.””

Ethan opened it carefully.

The paper was old.

The ink had faded.

At the top were the words:

*Emergency Succession Agreement.*

He read.

Then stopped.

His father’s signature.

His mother’s signature.

Harrison’s signature.

Three people.

One decision.

“If Michael Carter is unable to continue his role, all company authority will temporarily transfer to Claire Carter until a suitable successor is chosen.””

Ethan looked up.

“Temporary?””

Harrison nodded.

“Yes.””

“Until a successor?””

“Yes.””

Ethan continued reading.

Then he saw the final line.

His hands went cold.

*Final successor recommendation: Ethan Carter.*

He stared.

“My father chose me?””

Harrison nodded.

“Before you were even old enough to understand what the company was.””

Ethan looked at the page.

“Why?””

“Because Michael believed you would remember something everyone else forgot.””

“What?””

Harrison looked around the salon.

“That people matter.””

The words hurt.

Because Ethan understood.

This wasn’t about money.

Not really.

It was about a promise.

A promise three people made before everything collapsed.

Then Ethan noticed something.

A small mark.

A handwritten note in the corner.

He leaned closer.

“What is this?””

Harrison stepped forward.

His expression changed.

“I don’t know.””

Ethan read the faded handwriting.

It wasn’t his father’s.

It wasn’t his mother’s.

A fourth person had written beneath the agreement.

*The child must never inherit the company until the truth is revealed.*

Ethan looked up.

“Who wrote this?””

Nobody answered.

Daniel looked at Harrison.

Harrison looked terrified.

“I’ve never seen that before.””

Ethan looked at the signature beneath it.

A single letter.

A.

“Adrian.””

Nobody spoke.

The truth finally started forming.

Adrian had not discovered the agreement recently.

He had known about it.

Maybe for years.

“He knew.””

Harrison looked at Ethan.

“What?””

“Adrian knew.””

Ethan held up the paper.

“He knew I was supposed to inherit the company.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“That changes everything.””

“Why?””

“Because it means he wasn’t trying to stop you.””

Ethan looked at him.

“He was trying to prevent this day.””

A sound came from the salon entrance.

Clapping.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Everyone turned.

Adrian stood there.

Again.

But this time, he looked different.

Not angry.

Not arrogant.

Almost relieved.

“Finally.””

Harrison’s face hardened.

“You.””

Adrian smiled.

“You finally told him.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“You knew.””

Adrian looked at him.

“I knew many things.””

“You knew about the agreement.””

“Yes.””

“You knew my father wanted me to inherit Vale.””

“Yes.””

“Then why?””

Adrian walked inside.

“Because I knew what would happen if you did.””

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“You mean I’d become rich?””

“No.””

Adrian looked at the salon.

“You’d become exactly what my father wanted.””

“And what’s wrong with that?””

Adrian’s expression changed.

“You still don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

For the first time, Adrian looked tired.

“My father destroyed my family for this company.””

Harrison flinched.

“What?””

Adrian ignored him.

“You think I hate him because I wanted power.””

He shook his head.

“I hate him because I watched him choose strangers over us.””

Ethan frowned.

“Us?””

Adrian looked at him.

“My mother.””

The room went silent.

Ethan had never heard Harrison mention Adrian’s mother.

“She was sick.””

Adrian continued.

“And my father missed appointments. Missed dinners. Missed everything.””

Harrison’s voice was low.

“That’s not true.””

Adrian looked at him.

“You were always building something.””

“I was trying to protect our future.””

“No.””

Adrian stepped closer.

“You were protecting your empire.””

The accusation hung there.

Ethan didn’t know who was right.

Maybe both.

Maybe neither.

Adrian turned toward him.

“Your father discovered the truth.””

“About the theft?””

“Yes.””

“And Harrison?””

“He was part of it.””

Harrison’s expression changed.

“No.””

Adrian laughed.

“You still won’t admit it.””

Ethan looked at Harrison.

“Were you?””

The old man didn’t answer.

That silence returned.

But this time Ethan saw something else.

Not guilt.

Fear.

Harrison looked at him.

“I was involved.””

The room froze.

Ethan felt his chest tighten.

“Involved how?””

Harrison’s voice broke.

“I signed the first agreement.””

“What agreement?””

“The one that allowed the investors into Vale.””

“So you caused this.””

“I opened the door.””

Harrison looked down.

“But someone else walked through it.””

Adrian smiled.

“There it is.””

Ethan looked at him.

“What?””

“The truth.””

Adrian pointed at Harrison.

“He always admits just enough.””

Harrison looked angry.

“Leave.””

“No.””

Adrian pulled out a folder.

He placed it on the counter.

“This is why I came.””

Ethan stared.

“What is it?””

Adrian smiled.

“The final document.””

Harrison’s face changed immediately.

“No.””

Adrian looked at him.

“Yes.””

Ethan opened the folder.

Inside was a single page.

A transfer agreement.

Signed.

Dated thirty years ago.

And at the bottom—

A signature.

His mother’s.

Ethan looked up.

“Why does this say Claire Carter transferred control of Vale Luxury Group to…”

He stopped.

Because he saw the name.

The name that made Harrison go pale.

The name that made Daniel step backward.

The name that explained everything.

Not Harrison.

Not Adrian.

Not Ethan.

Someone else.

Someone who had been hiding in plain sight.

Ethan whispered:

“Who is this?””

Adrian smiled.

“Read the signature.””

Ethan looked closer.

And the final piece of the puzzle fell into place.

May you like

Because the person who signed control of Vale away thirty years ago…

Was the same person who had been secretly controlling it ever since.
