Chapter 8: The Mother Who Vanished

Ethan stared at the phone screen.

*Claire Carter.*

His mother’s name.

A name he had not seen appear on his phone in years.

Not because she was dead.

Not because they had lost contact.

Because she had disappeared.

Three years earlier, Claire had left the city without warning.

No explanation.

No goodbye.

Just a short message:

I need time.

At first, Ethan thought she was angry.

Then he thought she was sick.

Then, after months of silence, he accepted something he never wanted to accept.

His mother had chosen to leave.

But now—

Her name was appearing on his screen.

After thirty years of secrets.

After a video showing Harrison with his father.

After discovering his mother was connected to the company that had shaped everything.

Ethan’s finger hovered over the voicemail.

Nobody spoke.

Not Harrison.

Not Daniel.

Not Rachel.

Everyone seemed to understand that whatever came next belonged to Ethan.

He pressed play.

Static.

Then breathing.

Then a voice.

A voice that immediately made his chest tighten.

“Ethan.””

His eyes closed.

It was her.

Older.

Tired.

But still his mother.

“If you’re hearing this, then Harrison finally told you the truth.””

Ethan looked at Harrison.

The old man lowered his head.

Claire continued.

“I’m sorry.””

A pause.

A long one.

“I know those words are not enough.””

Ethan felt his throat tighten.

“I know you spent your life believing your father died because of an accident.””

The recording continued.

“But he didn’t.””

The room seemed to disappear.

“He died because he found something that powerful people wanted hidden.””

Ethan gripped the phone.

Claire’s voice became quieter.

“And I helped him.””

The message stopped.

For a second, nobody moved.

Then the recording continued.

“I helped him because I thought we could fix everything.””

Ethan looked at Harrison.

“We were wrong.””

A strange feeling moved through him.

Not anger.

Not yet.

Something worse.

Confusion.

His mother knew.

She knew all along.

Claire continued.

“Harrison was never the person who hurt your father.””

Harrison looked up.

Ethan noticed.

The old man’s eyes were wet.

“But he made choices that allowed someone else to.””

The words hit harder.

“Ethan, I need you to understand something.””

A shaky breath.

“People like Harrison are not always villains.””

Silence.

“Sometimes they are people who make one terrible choice and spend the rest of their lives trying to undo it.””

The message ended.

Everyone waited.

Then another recording started automatically.

This one was shorter.

More urgent.

“If Adrian has found you, don’t trust him.””

Ethan’s expression changed.

Adrian.

“Ethan, listen carefully.””

Claire’s voice dropped.

“He knows more than he admits.””

The message ended.

This time, completely.

Ethan slowly lowered the phone.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Harrison said:

“She was protecting you.””

Ethan looked at him.

“You don’t get to say that.””

Harrison accepted it.

“You’re right.””

Ethan walked toward the window.

Rain covered the glass.

“My mother disappeared because of this.””

“Yes.””

“My father died because of this.””

“Yes.””

“And you all just let me live a lie.””

Harrison looked away.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt more than excuses would have.

Ethan turned.

“Why?””

Harrison didn’t answer.

Rachel did.

“Because Claire believed the truth would destroy you.””

Ethan looked at her.

“She didn’t know me very well.””

Rachel gave a sad smile.

“She knew you better than anyone.””

Ethan looked down.

His mother always did that.

Protected him.

Even when he hated her for it.

Even when he begged her to explain why she never talked about his father.

She always said the same thing.

Some doors stay closed for a reason.

He had thought she was hiding pain.

Now he realized she was hiding danger.

Daniel’s phone suddenly rang.

He checked the screen.

His expression changed.

“What?””

Ethan noticed.

“Who is it?””

Daniel answered.

“Hello?””

Everyone watched his face.

The color slowly disappeared.

“Where?””

A pause.

“No. Do not let him leave.””

He ended the call.

Harrison stood.

“What happened?””

Daniel looked at him.

“The board meeting.””

Harrison frowned.

“What about it?””

“Adrian called an emergency vote.””

The room became still.

“For what?””

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“To remove Ethan as successor.””

Ethan almost laughed.

“Already?””

Daniel nodded.

“He’s moving faster than expected.””

Harrison shook his head.

“No.””

“What?””

“He doesn’t have enough votes.””

Daniel hesitated.

Then:

“He does now.””

Harrison’s expression changed.

“How?””

Daniel looked down.

“Because someone gave him access to the original ownership records.””

Rachel went pale.

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because those records disappeared thirty years ago.””

Ethan looked between them.

“What records?””

Rachel answered.

“The records that prove who actually owns Vale Luxury Group.””

A cold feeling spread through Ethan.

“Meaning?””

Rachel looked at Harrison.

“Meaning Adrian may not need to fight for the company.””

Harrison understood immediately.

“He may already own it.””

The words landed like a storm.

Ethan looked at the transfer papers.

His name.

The future chairman.

The dream Harrison had given him.

Could all of it be fake?

Daniel quickly opened his tablet.

“We need to verify the documents.””

He typed rapidly.

Seconds passed.

Then his face changed.

“No.””

Harrison stepped closer.

“What?””

Daniel turned the screen.

A legal filing.

Updated that morning.

A new controlling shareholder.

Ethan looked at the name.

His stomach dropped.

*Adrian Vale.*

“How?””

Daniel looked shaken.

“I don’t know.””

Harrison stared at the screen.

Then whispered:

“Unless…”

Everyone looked at him.

“Unless what?””

Harrison slowly sat down.

“Unless he found the original agreement.””

Rachel’s face changed.

“The agreement between the founders.””

“Yes.””

“What agreement?””

Ethan asked.

Harrison looked at him.

“The one your father created.””

Ethan frowned.

“My father?””

Harrison nodded.

“Michael knew Adrian was dangerous.””

The room became silent.

“He created a safeguard.””

“What kind of safeguard?””

Harrison looked at Ethan.

“One that would prevent Adrian from ever controlling the company.””

“Then how did he get control?””

Harrison didn’t answer.

And Ethan knew why.

Because the answer was something nobody wanted to say.

Someone had helped him.

Someone inside.

Someone close.

His phone buzzed.

Another message.

This time, from Adrian.

Ethan opened it.

A photograph.

His breath stopped.

It was an old photo.

His father.

His mother.

Harrison.

And a fourth person.

Someone standing beside them.

Someone Ethan recognized.

Not because he knew them.

Because he had seen the face every day.

On the wall of Vale Luxury Group.

The founder’s portrait.

The person who had been celebrated as a visionary.

The person whose name was on every building.

The person who was supposed to be gone.

The message beneath the photo read:

*“Your father didn’t discover my secret.””*

A second message appeared.

*“He discovered yours.””*

Ethan stared at the screen.

Then the final message arrived.

*“Ask Harrison why your mother was the one who signed your father’s death agreement.””*

The phone slipped slightly in Ethan’s hand.

Across the room, Harrison stood frozen.

Because this time—

He had no explanation.

May you like

No defense.

Only fear.
