Chapter 14: The Truth Beneath the Hospital

Geneva greeted Damien Cross with freezing rain and a sky the color of steel.

He arrived with a federal investigative liaison, two security specialists, and Jonathan Cross, whose wounded shoulder remained strapped beneath his coat.

The children stayed in New York under medical supervision.

That had been Damien's condition from the beginning.

No experiments. No secret transfers. No bargaining with the lives of his daughters.

At the airport, a woman in a navy suit approached them.

“Mr. Cross? I'm Inspector Elise Moreau. We've been investigating suspicious financial transfers connected to the medical facility.””

She handed Damien a folder.

“Charles Sterling's company owns the building. He arrived this morning.””

“Is Victoria with him?””

“According to immigration records, she entered Switzerland yesterday under her own name.””

Jonathan frowned.

“She'll be with her father.””

Inspector Moreau nodded.

“Our team has secured a search warrant. However, we need someone who can identify the historical documents and the people involved.””

Damien looked at Jonathan.

“Then let's go.””

The research facility stood beyond the city, hidden behind high stone walls and a row of bare trees.

Its sign identified it as a private pediatric research institute.

But the reception area was empty.

Dust covered the furniture. A clock had stopped at 3:17. The lights flickered overhead.

Inspector Moreau examined the security panel.

“Someone shut down the system remotely.””

Damien noticed a door at the end of the corridor.

It was slightly open.

He pushed it.

Inside stood Victoria Sterling.

She wore a black dress and a white coat, as if she were preparing to give a medical presentation. On the table beside her sat several boxes of documents.

“You came,” she said.

Damien stopped several feet away.

“Where is your father?””

Victoria smiled without warmth.

“Busy making arrangements.””

“For what?””

“For the future.””

Damien looked at the documents.

“Is that what you call stealing children?””

Her expression hardened.

“You have no idea what my family sacrificed.””

“I know what Elena sacrificed. I know what Lily and Rose have suffered. And I know you spent years monitoring Nora without telling her the truth.””

Victoria's eyes flashed.

“Nora was stable. The treatment was working.””

“You were administering an unapproved compound to a child without informed consent.””

“I was trying to preserve her life.””

“Then why did you lie to her?””

Victoria looked away.

For a moment, she seemed almost ashamed.

Then the expression disappeared.

“Because the truth would have destroyed everything.””

Damien stepped closer.

“What did Elena discover?””

Victoria's face tightened.

“She found out that the compound was never designed to cure the children. It was designed to suppress their symptoms long enough for us to study the genetic markers.””

“Study them for what?””

“Richard believed the triplets carried a rare combination of genes that could help treat certain inherited metabolic disorders. He wanted to develop a therapy that could be licensed to pharmaceutical companies.””

Damien stared at her.

“So he endangered three children for a patent?””

Victoria lifted her chin.

“He believed the research could save thousands of lives.””

“And he was willing to sacrifice my daughters to do it?””

“He believed the risks were manageable.””

“Did he tell Elena that?””

Victoria didn't answer.

Damien felt a wave of disgust.

“You knew she was innocent. You knew she hadn't abandoned me. Yet you stood in my wedding hall and called her a liar.””

Victoria's voice cracked.

“I didn't know the full truth until after Richard died.””

“But you knew enough.””

She looked at him.

“Yes.””

The admission hung between them.

For the first time, Victoria appeared to understand that there was no explanation capable of making her actions acceptable.

“I was raised to believe the Cross family could never be allowed to collapse,” she said.

“My father told me the research was essential. He said if the program failed, the Sterlings would lose everything.””

“And you believed him.””

“I wanted to.””

Damien shook his head.

“You wanted the money. You wanted the power. And you wanted to marry me because you thought you could control what happened next.””

Victoria's eyes filled with tears.

“I loved you.””

“No. You loved the life you thought I could give you.””

She flinched.

Before she could respond, a door slammed somewhere behind the laboratory.

Inspector Moreau drew her weapon.

“Police! Stay where you are!””

Footsteps thundered down the corridor.

A man in a gray suit appeared, carrying a metal case.

Charles Sterling.

He stopped when he saw Damien.

Then he smiled.

“Damien. I expected you sooner.””

Damien stepped between Charles and Victoria.

“Where is the original research file?””

Charles glanced at the boxes.

“Destroyed.””

“Liar.””

“Believe what you like.””

Jonathan moved forward.

“You stole Elena's children.””

Charles looked at him with mild amusement.

“Jonathan. I thought Richard had finally dealt with you.””

“He tried.””

“And failed.””

Charles set the metal case on the table.

“You all seem determined to misunderstand what happened. Richard was a visionary. He believed the triplets could unlock a treatment that would transform pediatric medicine.””

“They were children,” Damien said.

“They were biologically exceptional children.””

“They were my daughters.””

Charles's smile faded.

“Your daughters were never supposed to become a problem.””

The words seemed to suck the air from the room.

Inspector Moreau stepped forward.

“Charles Sterling, you're under arrest on suspicion of conspiracy, medical fraud, and unlawful transfer of minors.””

Charles laughed.

“You have no idea who you're dealing with.””

“I know exactly who I'm dealing with,” she replied.

Two officers entered and moved toward him.

Charles suddenly grabbed the metal case and hurled it against the wall.

Documents spilled across the floor.

Then he lunged for the nearest exit.

Jonathan intercepted him.

The two men crashed against a table. Charles struck Jonathan's wounded shoulder, forcing him to his knees.

Damien grabbed Charles by the collar.

“Look at me!””

Charles spat at him.

“You should have let Elena disappear.””

Damien's fist clenched.

For one terrible second, he wanted to hit him.

Then he remembered Lily asking him to make the bad people say sorry.

He released Charles and stepped back.

“Take him.””

The officers dragged Charles away.

Victoria remained motionless beside the table.

Damien looked at her.

“Where is the evidence?””

She slowly opened a drawer and removed a small black drive.

“My father didn't destroy everything. He kept the original records because he planned to sell the research to a pharmaceutical company.””

Damien took the drive.

“Why give it to me?””

Victoria looked down.

“Because I finally understand what he did.””

“No,” Damien replied.

“You understand that you lost.””

Her face crumpled.

Perhaps she wanted to argue.

Perhaps she wanted him to believe that she had been a victim too.

But she said nothing.

Inspector Moreau secured the drive as evidence.

Within minutes, investigators began searching the building.

They found the original laboratory records, forged consent forms, financial ledgers, and medical reports documenting the effects of the experimental compound.

They also found a file labeled *ELENA BENNETT—FINAL INTERVIEW*.

Damien opened it.

Inside was a transcript of a recorded conversation from three weeks before Elena died.

Her voice emerged from a small speaker.

“Richard is dead. You have no reason to keep doing this.””

A man's voice answered.

“Richard may be dead, but the people who funded him are still alive.””

“Then tell me who they are.””

“You know who they are.””

A pause followed.

Then Elena whispered, “Charles Sterling.””

The recording continued.

“If you expose the program, your daughters will be taken from you.””

“They're not your daughters.””

“No. But they are valuable.””

Damien felt his stomach twist.

Elena's voice grew fierce.

“They are children. They are not property. And if anything happens to me, Damien will find out everything.””

The man's reply was chilling.

“Then we need to make sure he never gets the chance.””

The recording ended.

Damien stood motionless.

Elena had known she was in danger.

She had tried to protect her daughters.

And she had left enough evidence behind to bring the people responsible to justice.

Inspector Moreau approached him.

“Mr. Cross, we found another document in the archive. It's a transfer order signed by Richard.””

She handed him the paper.

It listed the triplets by their original patient identifiers.

C-17: Lily Bennett.

C-18: Rose Bennett.

C-19: Nora Bennett.

Beneath the list was a final instruction.

*All three children must remain under observation until the final genetic analysis is complete.*

Damien stared at the document.

Then he noticed a handwritten note in the margin.

*The father carries the same mutation.*

His heart stopped.

He had assumed the condition had come from Elena's side of the family.

But if he carried the same mutation, then his daughters had inherited it from him.

And there was one more line.

*Subject D.C. may be the key to the treatment.*

Damien looked at Jonathan.

“What does this mean?””

Jonathan's expression turned grave.

“It means Richard wasn't only studying your daughters.””

May you like

He pointed to the final line.

“He was studying you.””
