Chapter 4: The Dead Man on the Marriage Certificate

Damien Cross had spent his entire life believing his uncle was dead.

Now, standing beneath the golden lights of his penthouse, he stared at a marriage certificate that suggested the dead man had once been married to the woman Damien loved.

Jonathan Cross.

His father's younger brother had supposedly died in a boating accident twenty months before Damien met Elena Bennett. Damien had been seventeen at the time. He remembered the funeral, the closed casket, and his father's hand gripping his shoulder while reporters crowded outside the church.

He remembered his father saying, Some people are born to destroy everything they touch.

He had assumed Richard was speaking about his brother's business enemies.

What if he hadn't been?

"Marcus," Damien said quietly, "tell me everything you found.""

His assistant placed a folder on the desk.

"The marriage certificate was filed in Albany, New York, six years before Elena met you. The divorce papers were signed three years later.""

"By whom?""

"Elena Bennett and Jonathan Cross.""

Damien flipped through the documents.

The signatures looked authentic. The dates were consistent. There was even a notarized statement from a lawyer who had represented both parties.

But the divorce certificate carried a strange detail.

The attorney's name was Arthur Bell.

Damien recognized it immediately.

Bell had been his father's personal lawyer for nearly thirty years. He had drafted the Cross family trust, handled the inheritance after Jonathan's supposed death, and represented Damien during his first major corporate acquisition.

"Arthur Bell is still alive?"" Damien asked.

"Yes, sir. Retired, but alive. He lives in Connecticut.""

"Call him.""

Marcus hesitated.

"There's one more thing you should know. The state database lists Jonathan as deceased, but the death certificate was filed eleven days after the boating accident. The body was never identified through dental records.""

Damien slowly lifted his eyes.

"You're telling me they buried an empty coffin?""

"I'm telling you the official record doesn't establish whose body was in it.""

Damien walked toward the floor-to-ceiling windows.

Below him, Manhattan glittered beneath the October night. Somewhere in that enormous city, his daughters were sleeping under the protection of people paid to keep them safe.

His daughters.

He still struggled to say the word without feeling as though he were trespassing on a life he had never earned.

"Find Arthur Bell's address," he said.

"I'm going to see him tonight.""

"Sir, the press is already outside the building. Someone leaked the wedding incident.""

Damien turned.

"What have they published?""

Marcus showed him his phone.

The headline filled the screen.

*BILLIONAIRE GROOM ABANDONS BRIDE AFTER CHILD CLAIMS HE IS HER FATHER.*

Below it was a photograph of Lily standing in the aisle, clutching Rose.

The caption called her an unidentified girl who had interrupted a private ceremony.

Damien felt his stomach twist.

"They photographed a child without permission?""

"The ballroom had hundreds of guests. Several people have already posted videos.""

"Get our legal team to request removal of every image showing her face. And issue a statement. The wedding is canceled. No further comment about the children.""

"Understood.""

"And Marcus?""

"Yes, sir?""

"Find out who leaked the story. I want evidence, not guesses.""

Marcus nodded and left.

Damien returned to the documents.

At the bottom of the folder was a photocopy of Jonathan's supposed death certificate.

The listed informant was Richard Cross.

The witness was Arthur Bell.

And the attending physician's signature belonged to a man who had been stripped of his medical license for falsifying records.

Damien picked up his phone.

He called the family doctor.

"Did you finish examining Lily and Rose?""

"Yes. Rose is stable, although she'll need close monitoring for dehydration and nutritional deficiencies. Lily is physically exhausted, but there are no immediate signs of serious injury.""

"Did you ask Lily about her mother?""

"I did. She said Elena had been ill for several weeks. She also mentioned a man who came to their apartment shortly before Elena died.""

Damien straightened.

"What man?""

"She described him as tall, with a scar across his left hand. She said her mother became frightened when she saw him.""

Damien looked at the death certificate again.

"Did Lily say anything else?""

"She said the man told her mother, 'You should have stayed buried.''"

The words echoed through the room.

"Doctor, please write down everything Lily remembers. Don't pressure her for details. She's been through enough.""

"Of course.""

After the call ended, Damien stood motionless for several seconds.

Then he heard a small voice behind him.

"Are you going to find Mommy?""

He turned.

Lily stood at the doorway in an oversized white T-shirt, her tangled hair falling over one shoulder. A nurse had tucked her into bed, but she had apparently slipped out when nobody was watching.

Damien crouched.

"Come here, sweetheart.""

She approached slowly.

"Are you angry with Mommy?""

"No.""

"Because she didn't tell you about me?""

Damien's throat tightened.

"I wish she'd told me. But I understand why she was scared.""

Lily studied his face.

"Mommy said you had a big house.""

"I do.""

"She said you had lots of toys.""

"I can buy toys.""

Lily shook her head.

"Rose doesn't need toys. She needs Mommy.""

Damien had negotiated hostile takeovers without blinking. He had faced down men who threatened to destroy his company.

But he had no answer for a seven-year-old who wanted something money could never buy.

He sat beside her.

"You're right," he whispered.

"She does.""

Lily leaned against his arm.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then she asked, "If you find the man who hurt Mommy, will you make him say sorry?""

Damien looked toward the marriage certificate.

"I'll make sure the truth comes out.""

Lily nodded, apparently satisfied.

As he walked her back to bed, his phone vibrated.

An unfamiliar number.

*Arthur Bell won't tell you anything. He's afraid of the man who is supposed to be dead.*

Another message followed.

*If you want to meet your uncle, come alone to Pier 19 at midnight. Bring the original marriage certificate.*

Damien read the message twice.

Then he looked at the clock.

11:17 p.m.

Whoever had sent it knew about the certificate.

And they knew exactly where he would be looking next.
