Chapter 5: The Man Waiting at Pier 19
At 11:53 p.m., Damien Cross stepped out of his black SUV at Pier 19.
The wind off the Hudson River cut through his coat. Cold water slapped against the pilings, and the distant glow of Manhattan reflected across the dark surface.
He had brought the marriage certificate.
He had also brought a concealed security detail, positioned far enough away to remain unseen but close enough to respond if anything went wrong.
He wasn't stupid enough to walk into an ambush alone.
His phone buzzed.
*Leave the car. Walk to the end of the pier.*
Damien followed the instruction.
Every step creaked beneath his polished shoes. A lone fishing boat rocked beside the dock, its cabin dark.
At the end of the pier stood a man in a gray coat.
He was tall and broad-shouldered, with silver hair and a face partially hidden by the raised collar of his coat. His left hand remained inside his pocket.
Damien stopped several feet away.
"Who are you?""
The man studied him.
"You have Richard's eyes.""
"And you have thirty seconds to explain why you summoned me.""
A dry laugh escaped the stranger.
"Still impatient. Your father used to say you inherited that from your mother.""
Damien's heart began pounding.
"Did you know my uncle Jonathan?""
The man tilted his head.
"What makes you think your uncle is dead?""
"The marriage certificate. The missing body. The falsified medical record.""
"Then your father did a poor job cleaning up after himself.""
Damien stepped forward.
"Tell me who you are.""
The man slowly removed his hand from his pocket.
A long, pale scar ran across his palm.
Damien recognized it from Lily's description.
"You were at Elena's apartment.""
The stranger's expression changed.
"She told you about me?""
"She never got the chance. She died three weeks ago.""
For the first time, the man's composure cracked.
"Elena is dead?""
Damien watched him carefully.
"You sound surprised.""
The man looked away toward the river.
"She was supposed to be safe.""
"Safe from whom?""
He gave no answer.
Damien pulled out the marriage certificate.
"Your name. Now.""
The stranger stared at the paper.
Then he whispered, "Jonathan Cross.""
Damien felt the air leave his lungs.
His uncle was alive.
The man he had mourned as a teenager stood in front of him, older and scarred but unmistakably connected to the family whose name Damien carried.
"Why?"" Damien demanded.
"Why did you let everyone believe you were dead?""
Jonathan lowered his head.
"Because your father made me an offer I couldn't refuse.""
"What offer?""
"Disappear, and Elena lives. Stay, and he destroys her.""
Damien's hands clenched.
"You married her.""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
Jonathan looked up sharply.
"Because I loved her.""
The words struck Damien like a slap.
"She told me she had never been married.""
"She told you what she thought would keep you from walking away.""
"You're lying.""
"Am I?""
Jonathan pulled a folded photograph from his coat.
It showed a younger Elena standing outside a courthouse, wearing a simple white dress. Beside her stood Jonathan, smiling with an arm around her waist.
On the back was a handwritten date.
Damien stared at the picture.
"She was twenty-one," Jonathan said.
"I was twenty-five. We met when I was working overseas for the family company. She was studying medicine. We married quietly because my father would never have approved.""
"Then what happened?""
Jonathan's face hardened.
"Richard discovered us. He said Elena had married into the family to steal its money. He threatened to have her arrested, and when she refused to leave me, he arranged for me to be declared dead.""
Damien shook his head.
"That makes no sense. Why would she leave you and then become involved with me?""
"Because our marriage was over.""
"Convenient.""
Jonathan's jaw tightened.
"Elena filed for divorce before she met you. She wanted a life that had nothing to do with the Cross family. I signed the papers because I thought she would finally be free.""
"Then why did you let my father continue threatening her?""
"I didn't know he was still doing it.""
Damien laughed bitterly.
"You expect me to believe you disappeared for seven years and never checked on the woman you claim to have loved?""
Jonathan's eyes flashed.
"I checked. Every year. I sent money through a lawyer.
I arranged for her to have a place to live. I made sure she could finish her medical training.""
"She never received any of it.""
Jonathan went still.
"What?""
"She was living in a rundown apartment when she died. She couldn't afford proper medical care. She lost her license after a complaint filed by Sterling Holdings.""
Jonathan's expression darkened.
"Richard promised me she would be taken care of.""
"Richard is dead.""
"Then someone continued his work.""
The two men stared at each other.
For the first time, Damien wondered whether his uncle might be telling the truth.
He hated that possibility almost as much as he hated the alternative.
"Did you know about Lily?"" he asked.
Jonathan shook his head.
"No.""
"Did you know Elena was pregnant when she left me?""
"No.""
"Did you ever contact her directly?""
"Once.""
"When?""
"Six months after you started dating her. I learned she was seeing you, and I thought you knew about our marriage. I called her to apologize for what happened between us.""
Damien stared at him.
"What did she say?""
"She told me she loved you. She said you made her feel safe for the first time in her life.""
The words cut through Damien's anger.
He remembered Elena sitting barefoot on his kitchen counter, laughing as she stole strawberries from his refrigerator. He remembered the night she fell asleep against his chest while rain battered the windows.
He remembered promising her that nobody would ever make her feel afraid again.
Then he had let her disappear.
"What happened after that?"" he asked.
Jonathan's voice dropped.
"Three days later, Richard summoned me to his office. He showed me photographs of Elena entering your apartment. He said if I ever contacted her again, he would tell you I had been sleeping with her while you were together.""
Damien's stomach twisted.
"He wanted us to hate each other.""
"He wanted the family inheritance protected. If you married Elena, your father believed you would reject the arranged marriage he had negotiated with Victoria's family. The merger was worth billions.""
Damien thought of Victoria's words in the lounge.
Your father made sacrifices for you.
"Why are you coming forward now?""
Jonathan reached into his coat and removed a small digital recorder.
"Because Elena contacted me three weeks before she died.""
Damien froze.
"What did she say?""
"She told me Richard's men had found her. She said she had evidence of what he did to us, and that she planned to give it to you.""
"Where is it?""
Jonathan held out the recorder.
"She said the evidence was hidden in a place only you would think to look.""
Damien took the device.
"Where?""
"I don't know. She refused to tell me over the phone.""
Damien stared at him.
"Then why bring me here?""
Jonathan's expression turned grave.
"Because I believe someone killed her before she could reach you.""
A sudden metallic clang rang out behind them.
Jonathan spun around.
"Get down!""
A gunshot split the night.
Damien dropped behind a stack of wooden crates as the bullet struck the railing inches above his head.
His security team shouted from the far end of the pier.
Another shot cracked through the darkness.
Jonathan grabbed Damien's coat.
"Run!""
They sprinted toward the docked fishing boat. A shadow moved between the warehouses, and Damien heard the heavy thud of boots on wet wood.
His security detail returned fire.
Jonathan shoved Damien behind the boat's cabin.
"Get inside!""
"What about you?""
"Go!""
Damien climbed aboard, clutching the recorder.
A third shot rang out.
Jonathan staggered.
Damien caught him before he fell.
Blood spread across the shoulder of his gray coat.
"Uncle!""
Jonathan grimaced.
"Don't let them get the recorder.""
Damien pressed his hand against the wound.
"Who are they?""
Jonathan looked toward the darkness at the end of the pier.
May you like
Then he whispered five words that turned Damien's blood to ice.
"The man who killed Elena.""
