Chapter 4: The Name Hidden in the Box
The black box fell from Victoria’s hand.
For a moment, nobody moved.
The sound it made against the marble floor was louder than any scream.
My name was still written across the top.
*Nia Whitmore Hayes.*
Not Nia Whitmore.
Not Nia Victoria’s daughter.
Hayes.
The last name I had never heard spoken about myself.
The last name that belonged to the father I was told abandoned me.
My heart pounded so hard I could hear it.
“Why is my name on that?””
Victoria didn’t answer.
She stared at the box like it was something alive.
Something that had escaped from where she buried it.
Alexander slowly stepped forward.
“Alexander: Don’t touch it.””
Victoria’s eyes snapped toward him.
“You don’t understand.””
“No,” he said calmly.
“I understand exactly what that is.””
Her face changed.
“You knew?””
The question was almost a whisper.
Alexander looked at the box.
“I suspected.””
I looked between them.
A strange anger rose inside me.
Everyone seemed to know pieces of my life except me.
Everyone had a chapter.
Everyone had information.
And I had spent ten years believing I was the problem.
“What is inside?””
My voice cut through the room.
Nobody answered.
I walked closer.
“Nia: I asked what is inside.””
Victoria stepped forward immediately.
“No.””
The force of her answer surprised me.
Not because she refused.
Because she sounded afraid.
I stopped.
“Why?””
She swallowed.
“Because you’re not ready.””
I almost laughed.
Not ready.
That was the sentence people used when they wanted to keep you powerless.
For ten years, everyone decided what I could handle.
Everyone decided what I should know.
Nobody ever asked me.
“I was ready when you lied to me.””
Victoria looked away.
The silence said more than words.
Alexander bent down and picked up the box.
Victoria moved quickly.
“Victoria: Give that to me.””
He didn’t.
“Alexander: Why?””
Her expression hardened.
“Because it belongs to my family.””
Alexander looked at me.
Then back at her.
“No.””
His voice became colder.
“It belongs to Nia.””
The way he said my name felt different.
Like he wasn’t just saying it.
Like he was reminding everyone in the room that I existed.
I reached for the box.
My fingers touched the old black leather.
It was heavier than I expected.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
Ten years of secrets felt like they were sitting inside it.
“Open it.””
Everyone looked at me.
Alexander studied my face.
“Are you sure?””
I nodded.
“I spent my whole life waiting for answers.””
I looked at Victoria.
“I’m done waiting.””
The lock clicked open.
Inside was a collection of papers.
A small silver necklace.
A handwritten letter.
And an old hospital bracelet.
My hands froze when I saw the bracelet.
A baby bracelet.
The letters were faded, but I could still read them.
*Baby Girl Hayes.*
My eyes filled instantly.
I touched it carefully.
“I wore this?””
Alexander nodded.
“Yes.””
“How do you know?””
His expression softened.
“Because I was there.””
The room went quiet again.
I looked at him.
“What?””
Alexander took a breath.
“When you were born, your father and I worked together.””
I stared.
“My father knew you?””
“He was my closest friend.””
A memory appeared suddenly.
A man laughing.
A deep voice.
A hand holding mine.
But it disappeared before I could catch it.
I pressed my fingers against my forehead.
“I don’t remember.””
“You were three years old when he died.””
Victoria immediately interrupted.
“He didn’t die.””
Alexander looked at her.
That one sentence changed everything.
My eyes moved toward her.
“What?””
Victoria’s face lost all color.
She realized what she had done.
Alexander’s voice became quiet.
“Interesting.””
Victoria looked furious.
“Don’t play games.””
“I’m not.””
He pointed toward the box.
“Your own words just confirmed it.””
I looked at her.
“Mom…”
The word came out automatically.
But it felt strange.
Different.
Like I was questioning whether she deserved it.
“Tell me the truth.””
Victoria closed her eyes.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then she whispered:
“Your father was supposed to disappear.””
My blood went cold.
“Supposed to?””
Olivia suddenly stepped forward.
“Mom, stop.””
Victoria turned toward her.
“Stay out of this.””
“No.””
Everyone looked at Olivia.
For the first time, my sister wasn’t protecting Victoria.
“I’m tired of this.””
Victoria stared at her.
“You have no idea what you’re saying.””
“I know exactly what I’m saying.””
Olivia’s eyes filled with tears.
“I was twelve when Amelia left.””
I froze.
“You remember?””
Olivia nodded slowly.
“She came to my room that night.””
My chest tightened.
“What did she say?””
Olivia looked at me.
And guilt crossed her face.
“She said she was coming back for you.””
The room became silent.
“She told me to take care of you.””
I felt my throat tighten.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Olivia looked ashamed.
“Because Mom told me if I said anything, I would lose my family.””
I stared at her.
“You let me believe she abandoned me.””
A tear rolled down Olivia’s cheek.
“I was a kid.””
I wanted to be angry.
I was angry.
But part of me saw something painful.
She had been trapped too.
Just differently.
Charlotte shook her head.
“Olivia, don’t.””
“No.””
Olivia wiped her tears.
“She deserves to know.””
Victoria’s expression became cold.
“You ungrateful children.””
The words were so familiar.
The same words.
The same punishment.
But this time, they didn’t hurt the way they used to.
Because I finally understood.
The problem was never that I was difficult to love.
The problem was that someone had spent years making sure I believed I wasn’t.
I picked up the letter.
It had my name written on the front.
Not printed.
Handwritten.
A mother’s handwriting.
My hands shook.
“Nia: This is from Amelia?””
Alexander nodded.
“Read it.””
I opened the paper.
The first line destroyed me.
*My sweet Nia,*
I had to stop reading.
My vision blurred.
No one had called me sweet in years.
Not sincerely.
I forced myself to continue.
*If you are reading this, it means I failed to protect you the way I promised I would.*
My breathing became uneven.
*I need you to know one thing. I never left you. I fought for you every single day.*
A tear fell onto the paper.
I kept reading.
*Victoria will tell you that I was unstable. She will tell you that I was dangerous. She will tell you that your father left because of me.*
I looked up.
Victoria looked terrified.
The letter continued.
*But the truth is that your father discovered something about Victoria’s business. Something that could destroy everything she built.*
Alexander’s expression changed.
I looked at him.
“What business?””
He didn’t answer.
I looked back down.
*He wanted to expose her. I wanted to take you somewhere safe. But Victoria found out before we could leave.*
My hands trembled.
The next line was harder to read.
*Your father didn’t abandon you, Nia. He was trying to come back for you.*
A sound escaped my throat.
Half pain.
Half disbelief.
I looked at Victoria.
“Where is he?””
Nobody answered.
I stood.
“Where is my father?””
Victoria looked away.
“Victoria…”
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“No more lies.””
Alexander stepped closer.
“Nia.””
I looked at him.
His expression was heavy.
Like he knew the answer.
“Your father’s disappearance was never investigated properly.””
“Why?””
He looked toward Victoria.
“Because someone made sure it wasn’t.””
The mansion suddenly felt too large.
Too beautiful.
Too full of secrets.
Then a noise came from outside.
A car door closing.
Everyone turned toward the entrance.
A security guard rushed inside.
His face was pale.
“Victoria.””
She looked at him.
“What happened?””
The guard hesitated.
Then he said:
“There’s someone outside asking for Nia.””
My heart stopped.
“Who?””
The guard looked at the papers in his hand.
Then at me.
“He says his name is Daniel Hayes.””
Alexander froze.
The room went completely silent.
Because everyone knew that name.
Everyone except me.
My father.
The man who was supposed to be dead.
The man who had disappeared ten years ago.
Victoria took one step backward.
And for the first time in my life…
I saw fear on her face.
“Don’t let him in,” she whispered.
But it was already too late.
The front doors opened.
And a man I had never seen before walked into the mansion.
Older.
Tired.
Carrying the same silver necklace from the box around his neck.
He looked directly at me.
His eyes filled with tears.
“Nia?””
My entire body went still.
Then he whispered:
“I’m sorry I couldn’t find you sooner, daughter.””
May you like
And behind him, Victoria quietly said the words that revealed the next secret.
“Daniel… you were supposed to be dead.””
