Chapter 8: The Secret Amelia Left Behind

Darkness swallowed the mansion.

The chandeliers disappeared.

The ocean outside became nothing but a black reflection against the glass walls.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Then the emergency lights flickered on.

A dim red glow filled the room.

And I heard her voice again.

“Nia.””

My entire body froze.

“Mom?””

The word escaped before I could stop it.

Everyone turned toward the entrance.

But nobody was there.

Only the open doors.

Only the cold ocean wind moving through the room.

Daniel rushed toward me.

“Stay behind me.””

I barely heard him.

My mind was somewhere else.

Amelia.

Alive.

Close enough to call my name.

After ten years of believing I had lost her.

After ten years of believing she chose to leave.

She was here.

Somewhere.

“Where is she?””

My voice shook.

Nobody answered.

Alexander looked around carefully.

“Everyone stay calm.””

Charles laughed.

A nervous laugh.

The first real sign of fear I had seen from him.

“You still think you can control this?””

Alexander turned toward him.

“You’re the one who looks worried.””

Charles’s expression darkened.

Because Alexander was right.

The man who walked into the mansion believing he owned every secret suddenly looked like someone who had lost control of the story.

Victoria looked toward the doors.

“Amelia…”

Her voice was barely audible.

I looked at her.

For years, Victoria had spoken Amelia’s name like it was a curse.

Now she said it like a warning.

“You knew she was alive.””

Victoria didn’t answer.

My chest tightened.

“Didn’t you?””

Her silence was enough.

I stepped closer.

“How long?””

She looked at me.

“Nia…”

“How long did you know my mother was alive?””

A tear appeared in her eyes.

“I found out three years ago.””

The answer hit me harder than I expected.

Three years.

She had three years.

Three years knowing I had a mother somewhere in the world.

Three years choosing silence.

“You knew.””

My voice became smaller.

“You knew I was waiting for her.””

Victoria looked away.

“I thought it was safer.””

“Safer for who?””

The question broke through her defenses.

She had no answer.

Charles stepped forward.

“Enough.””

I turned toward him.

“No.””

My anger surprised even me.

“You don’t get to say enough.””

His eyes narrowed.

“You have no idea what you’re dealing with.””

I looked at him.

“I know exactly what I’m dealing with.””

I pointed around the room.

“A grandfather who destroys people to keep power.””

Then at Victoria.

“A mother who lied to me for my entire life.””

Then at myself.

“And a daughter who was never allowed to know who she was.””

The room became silent.

Because I finally said it.

I finally said everything I had been carrying.

Charles stared at me.

Then something strange happened.

He smiled.

Not because he was happy.

Because he recognized something.

“Your mother was right.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“She said you would become strong.””

My heart stopped.

“You talked to her?””

He didn’t answer.

Daniel moved forward.

“What did you do with Amelia?””

Charles looked at him.

“You still care about her.””

“She’s the mother of my daughter.””

Charles smiled.

“You never stopped loving her.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

Neither confirmed nor denied it.

And somehow that hurt.

Because I realized my parents’ story wasn’t just about secrets.

It was about two people who had spent years searching for each other.

And I had spent years believing they abandoned me.

Alexander’s phone buzzed again.

He checked it.

Then his eyes moved toward me.

“She’s nearby.””

My heart raced.

“Where?””

He looked toward the hallway.

“The old guest wing.””

I turned.

The hallway where nobody was allowed to go.

The hallway Victoria always said was being renovated.

I remembered being eight years old.

I had asked why one room was locked.

Victoria told me:

“Because some doors are better left closed.””

Now I knew.

Some doors didn’t hide empty rooms.

They hid the truth.

I started walking.

“Nia.””

Daniel followed.

So did Alexander.

Victoria stayed behind.

I looked back.

“Aren’t you coming?””

The question surprised her.

She stared at me.

“I don’t know if I deserve to.””

For a moment, I saw the woman beneath everything.

Not the controller.

Not the liar.

Just someone who had made terrible choices.

I didn’t forgive her.

Not yet.

But I nodded.

“Then come and face what you did.””

She followed.

The old hallway was darker than the rest of the mansion.

The walls were covered with family portraits.

Generations of Whitmores.

Powerful faces.

Perfect smiles.

Fake happiness.

At the end was a wooden door.

Alexander tried the handle.

Locked.

Daniel stepped forward.

“I know this door.””

Everyone looked at him.

“How?””

He stared at it.

“Amelia and I hid something here.””

Victoria stopped walking.

“What?””

Daniel looked at her.

“You didn’t know everything.””

He pulled a small key from his pocket.

My heart jumped.

“You had that this whole time?””

He nodded.

“Amelia gave it to me before everything happened.””

The key turned.

The door opened.

The room beyond was small.

Not luxurious.

Not decorated.

Just a simple room filled with boxes.

Photographs.

Documents.

Letters.

A life hidden away.

I walked inside slowly.

My eyes immediately found the wall.

Pictures.

Hundreds of them.

Me.

As a baby.

As a toddler.

At birthdays.

At the beach.

With Amelia.

With Daniel.

Moments I thought never existed.

I touched one photograph.

It showed Amelia holding me while I slept.

“She kept these?””

Daniel nodded.

“She never stopped loving you.””

My eyes filled.

I covered my mouth.

Because suddenly all the years of feeling unwanted collapsed.

I wasn’t abandoned.

I was stolen from a life where I was loved.

Victoria entered the room.

Her eyes moved across everything.

And she looked broken.

“I didn’t know.””

Daniel looked at her.

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“You didn’t want to know.””

The words hurt because they were true.

Alexander opened a drawer.

Inside were files.

He pulled one out.

“Nia.””

I walked over.

The file had my name.

Inside were medical records.

Birth records.

And a letter.

From Amelia.

I opened it.

*My daughter,*

I stopped.

Daughter.

Not because of blood.

Because of love.

*If you found this, then the truth finally reached you. I’m sorry it took so long.*

I continued.

*I need you to know why I disappeared. I didn’t run because I was afraid. I ran because Charles was willing to destroy anyone who threatened him.*

I looked toward Charles.

He stood in the doorway.

Watching.

Waiting.

*But there is one thing I never told anyone.*

My hands shook.

*The evidence against Charles is not the most important thing I hid.*

A cold feeling moved through me.

I kept reading.

*The most important thing is proof of who helped him.*

My eyes moved toward Victoria.

The room became silent.

*Because the person closest to Charles was never the danger I feared most.*

A pause.

Then:

*It was the person I trusted to protect my daughter after I was gone.*

I stopped.

Everyone waited.

I looked at the next line.

And my heart broke.

Because Amelia had written only one name.

One name that changed everything.

*Victoria.*

I slowly lowered the letter.

Victoria closed her eyes.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I looked at her.

“Then why did Amelia write your name?””

She couldn’t answer.

Then the sound of footsteps came from outside.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Everyone turned.

Charles was gone from the doorway.

Alexander immediately moved.

“He left.””

Daniel looked toward the hallway.

“No.””

His face changed.

“He didn’t leave.””

A chill ran through me.

“Then where is he?””

Daniel looked at the open window at the end of the hall.

The curtains moved in the wind.

And sitting on the floor beneath them was a small envelope.

Alexander picked it up.

The front had only three words.

*For Nia Hayes.*

I opened it.

Inside was a single sentence.

Written by Charles.

*You want to know why your mother chose Victoria?*

My hands shook.

The next line appeared.

*Because Victoria was not the person who betrayed her first.*

I looked up.

Daniel’s face had gone pale.

“What?””

I turned the paper over.

May you like

There was one final sentence.

*Ask your father what he did the night Amelia disappeared.*
