Chapter 9: The Truth My Father Buried

The room went silent after I read the sentence.

*Ask your father what he did the night Amelia disappeared.*

I looked at Daniel.

He didn’t move.

He didn’t defend himself.

He didn’t ask what Charles meant.

And that was the first thing that frightened me.

Because everyone else had reacted with anger.

Victoria denied.

Charles attacked.

Alexander searched for answers.

But Daniel…

Daniel looked like a man who had just watched a secret he carried for years walk into the light.

“Dad?””

The word came out quietly.

His eyes lifted toward mine.

I hated how much I wanted him to say it wasn’t true.

I hated how much I needed him to be the one person who wasn’t hiding something.

“Nia…”

My chest tightened.

“Tell me he’s lying.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

That was enough.

A sharp pain moved through me.

Not because I had proof.

Because I didn’t.

I had hope.

And somehow losing hope hurt more.

Alexander stepped closer.

“Daniel.””

My father looked at him.

“I was going to tell her.””

“When?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Alexander’s expression hardened.

“That’s the problem.””

I looked between them.

“What happened?””

Nobody spoke.

I raised my voice.

“What happened that night?””

Daniel looked at the photographs around the room.

At the memories Amelia saved.

At the childhood I never knew I had.

Then he sat down slowly.

Like the weight of ten years had finally become too heavy to carry.

“The night Amelia disappeared…”

He swallowed.

“I made a mistake.””

The room felt smaller.

“What kind of mistake?””

Daniel looked at me.

“The kind that changed your life.””

I waited.

But he struggled.

And for the first time, I saw fear in my father’s eyes.

Not fear of Charles.

Not fear of Victoria.

Fear of my judgment.

“Your mother found evidence against Charles.””

I nodded.

“I know.””

“She wanted to leave immediately.””

“Leave with me?””

“Yes.””

His voice broke slightly.

“She wanted to take you somewhere safe.””

“Then why didn’t she?””

Daniel looked down.

“Because I stopped her.””

The words hit me.

I felt like I had forgotten how to breathe.

“You stopped her?””

He nodded.

“I thought I could fix everything.””

The anger came before the sadness.

“How?””

He looked at me.

“I thought if I met with Charles, I could convince him to back down.””

Alexander closed his eyes.

Like he already knew.

“You went alone.””

Daniel nodded.

“I thought I could protect my family.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I looked around the room.

“Everyone says they were protecting me.””

My voice cracked.

“But somehow I’m always the person who gets hurt.””

Nobody answered.

Daniel continued.

“I met Charles that night.””

“What happened?””

“He knew Amelia had the evidence.””

A chill moved through me.

“Then?””

“He offered me a deal.””

I stared.

“What deal?””

Daniel’s face became full of regret.

“He said if I disappeared, he would leave Amelia and you alone.””

The room went silent.

My heart sank.

“You agreed?””

Daniel looked at me.

“I pretended to.””

I froze.

“What?””

“I wanted him to believe I was leaving.””

He took a shaky breath.

“Because I was planning to come back with the police.””

I looked at Alexander.

He nodded slowly.

“Daniel contacted me after the meeting.””

Daniel continued.

“But before I could return…”

His voice broke.

“Everything changed.””

“What happened?””

He looked toward the window.

“The car accident.””

The words felt familiar.

The story everyone told.

The story that never made sense.

“Charles caused it?””

Daniel nodded.

“But Amelia knew something was wrong.””

My eyes widened.

“What do you mean?””

“She wasn’t in the car.””

I froze.

“What?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Amelia knew Charles would come after her. She created a plan.””

“A plan?””

“She used the accident to make everyone believe she was gone.””

My heart pounded.

“Then why did she leave me?””

“She didn’t.””

The answer came immediately.

“She tried to come back.””

“Then why didn’t she?””

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“Because Victoria found her first.””

I looked toward Victoria.

She looked down.

Again.

Always another secret.

“What did you do?””

Victoria whispered:

“I made a choice.””

My anger returned.

“A choice?””

She looked at me.

“I thought if Amelia stayed away, you would be safe.””

“Safe?””

I stepped toward her.

“You kept my mother away from me.””

“I was trying to keep Charles from finding you.””

The room went quiet.

I stopped.

Because that was the first thing she said that sounded like fear instead of control.

“You knew he would hurt me?””

Victoria looked at Charles’s empty doorway.

“Yes.””

A tear fell.

“I knew what he was capable of.””

Daniel stared at her.

“But you still helped him.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“I helped him once.””

Nobody moved.

“Once?””

Victoria nodded.

“When Amelia disappeared, I helped create the story that she abandoned Nia.””

My stomach twisted.

“Why?””

She looked at me.

“Because Charles told me if I didn’t, he would kill Amelia.””

Silence.

The room changed.

Because for the first time, Victoria wasn’t just the villain.

She was also someone trapped by fear.

But that didn’t erase what she did.

“You lied to me for ten years.””

“I know.””

“You made me hate her.””

“I know.””

“Do you know what that did to me?””

Victoria started crying.

“I know.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You don’t.””

Because she didn’t.

Nobody did.

Nobody knew what it felt like to wonder why your own mother didn’t love you.

Nobody knew what it felt like to believe you were the child someone left behind.

Daniel stood.

“Nia.””

I looked at him.

“I’m sorry.””

I wanted to accept it.

I wanted to.

But I couldn’t.

Not yet.

“Where is Amelia now?””

Daniel hesitated.

And that scared me.

“What?””

He looked at Alexander.

Alexander nodded.

“Tell her.””

Daniel took a deep breath.

“Your mother was supposed to meet us tonight.””

My heart jumped.

“She’s here?””

He nodded.

“But after Charles arrived…”

He stopped.

“What?””

Daniel looked toward the hallway.

“She disappeared.””

My blood went cold.

“What do you mean disappeared?””

Alexander checked his phone.

“No signal.””

He looked at the security system.

“Cameras are offline.””

A terrible silence followed.

Charles hadn’t left.

He had taken something.

Or someone.

“Amelia.””

Daniel rushed toward the door.

I followed.

“No.””

He stopped.

I looked at him.

“I’m coming.””

“Nia, it’s dangerous.””

I stared at him.

“Do you know how many years I spent thinking she didn’t want me?””

His face broke.

“I’m not losing her again.””

Daniel looked at me.

And for the first time, he didn’t see a child.

He saw his daughter.

He nodded.

“Okay.””

Alexander grabbed his jacket.

“I’m coming too.””

Victoria looked at him.

“Why?””

He looked at me.

“Because someone spent ten years trying to erase her family.””

A pause.

“And I’m done letting them.””

We moved through the mansion.

The security alarms were silent.

The lights flickered.

The beautiful home that once felt untouchable now felt like a trap.

Then we heard it.

A sound from the basement.

A scream.

My blood froze.

“Amelia!””

Daniel ran.

We followed.

The basement door was locked.

Alexander forced it open.

Inside was darkness.

Then a voice.

“Don’t come closer.””

Charles.

I stepped forward.

“Nia?””

Daniel grabbed my arm.

“No.””

But I saw her.

At the other side of the room.

Amelia.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

Her eyes found mine.

And she cried.

“Nia.””

I couldn’t move.

Ten years.

Ten years of waiting.

And she was right there.

But Charles stood between us.

Holding a folder.

A gun pointed at the floor.

Not at us.

At the evidence.

“You all wanted the truth.””

His voice echoed.

“Fine.””

He lifted the folder.

“But before this ends…”

He looked directly at me.

“You should know what your mother did after she left you.””

Amelia’s face changed.

“No.””

Charles smiled.

“Tell her.””

My heart pounded.

“What did she do?””

Nobody answered.

Then Amelia whispered the words that destroyed the last piece of my childhood.

“I tried to come back for you.””

A tear fell down her face.

“But I was too late.””

I stared at her.

“Why?””

Her voice broke.

“Because someone had already convinced you that I was the enemy.””

She looked at Victoria.

Then Daniel.

Then me.

And whispered:

“The night I disappeared…”

A pause.

“The person who betrayed me wasn’t Victoria.””

My heart stopped.

May you like

Amelia looked at Daniel.

“It was your father.””
