Chapter 3: The Family That Stole Six Years
The word “family” should have meant safety.
Instead, it sounded like a threat.
Matthew Carter stood in his office, phone still pressed against his ear, staring at the city lights outside the glass windows.
“Say that again,” he said.
The security officer on the other end hesitated.
“The custody agreement lists Carter family representatives as the intended guardians of Lucy.””
Matthew’s voice dropped.
“Which Carter family representatives?””
A long pause.
Then the answer.
“Ethan Carter and Victoria Carter.””
Matthew closed his eyes.
His brother.
His aunt.
Two people who had sat beside him at his father’s funeral.
Two people who had told him they would protect the family legacy.
Angela watched his face change.
She already knew.
“Matthew…”
He lowered the phone.
“No.””
The word came out quietly.
But everyone heard it.
Daniel looked concerned.
“What is it?””
Matthew looked at the document again.
“My family tried to take Lucy.””
Angela’s expression turned bitter.
“They didn’t try.””
She looked toward the floor.
“They did.””
Matthew looked at her.
“What?””
Angela took a slow breath.
“Six years ago, after I refused your father’s money, I was told someone from Carter Holdings would come to discuss Lucy’s future.””
Her hands tightened together.
“I thought maybe they finally wanted to do the right thing.””
A sad smile crossed her face.
“I was wrong.””
Lucy sat quietly in the chair.
She didn’t understand everything.
But she understood enough to know the adults around her were talking about her.
Matthew noticed.
He moved closer.
“Lucy, do you want to go downstairs with Daniel for a few minutes?””
Lucy looked at him.
“Are you going to leave?””
The question stopped him.
“No.””
“Promise?””
Matthew looked into her eyes.
For years, people had asked him for signatures, investments, favors, and decisions.
Nobody had ever asked him for something so simple.
A promise.
“I promise.””
Lucy studied his face.
Then nodded.
Daniel gently guided her toward the door.
Before leaving, Lucy turned around.
“Matthew?””
“Yes?””
“I still think you dance like a dad.””
The door closed.
And Matthew stood there silently.
Because six years ago, he had lost a daughter he never knew existed.
And somehow, in less than an hour, she had given him a title he had never earned.
Angela waited until Lucy was gone.
Then she spoke.
“You really didn’t know.””
Matthew looked at her.
“About Lucy?””
She nodded.
“No.””
“Not even when she was born?””
“No.””
Angela looked down.
“I thought maybe you knew and didn’t care.””
The words hit harder than he expected.
Matthew looked away.
“I would never have abandoned my child.””
Angela’s eyes filled.
“I know that now.””
“But you didn’t know then?””
She shook her head.
“I knew the man you were.””
Matthew frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“It means everyone saw Matthew Carter, the billionaire.””
She swallowed.
“But I knew the man who stayed late after charity events because he didn’t want lonely kids to leave first.””
Matthew said nothing.
“You were kind before you became powerful.””
Her voice became softer.
“Then your father took control of everything.””
Matthew looked at the letter again.
His father’s handwriting.
His father’s decisions.
His father’s secrets.
“What happened after you were contacted?””
Angela leaned back.
“I was told Carter Holdings had lawyers ready. They said they could prove I was unfit.””
Matthew’s eyes narrowed.
“Based on what?””
“Nothing.””
“Then how?””
Angela looked at him.
“They had money.””
The answer was simple.
And painful.
“They knew I couldn’t fight them.””
Matthew walked toward the window.
Outside, thousands of people lived their lives.
People who never knew how easily powerful families could destroy someone.
“Why didn’t you call me?””
Angela laughed once.
But there was no humor in it.
“I tried.””
Matthew turned.
“What?””
“I called your office.””
“When?””
“After Lucy was born.””
Matthew stared.
“I never got a message.””
Angela nodded.
“That’s what I was told would happen.””
A cold feeling moved through him.
“What do you mean?””
“I called three times.””
She looked at him.
“Each time, your assistant said you were unavailable.””
Matthew’s face changed.
“Who was my assistant then?””
Angela answered immediately.
“Victoria.””
The room went silent.
Matthew’s aunt.
The person who had managed his father’s private affairs.
The person who became his executive assistant after his father died.
Daniel slowly spoke.
“Matthew…”
But Matthew already understood.
Someone had controlled the information.
Someone had made sure he never knew.
The next morning, Matthew walked into Carter Holdings headquarters with a different kind of anger.
Not the loud kind.
Not the kind that involved shouting.
The dangerous kind.
The kind that came from realizing someone had stolen something precious.
Employees stopped talking as he walked through the lobby.
Usually, Matthew’s presence created fear.
Today, it created uncertainty.
He entered the executive conference room.
Ethan Carter was already there.
His younger brother sat at the table, perfectly dressed in a gray suit, sipping coffee like nothing was wrong.
“Brother,” Ethan said.
Matthew closed the door behind him.
“Why is Angela Brooks being evicted?””
Ethan didn’t react.
“That’s what this is about?””
Matthew placed the eviction notice on the table.
“Answer me.””
Ethan glanced at the paper.
“Her lease ended.””
“That’s not true.””
Ethan leaned back.
“Then why are you here?””
Matthew stared.
“Because I found out about Lucy.””
The smallest change appeared on Ethan’s face.
A pause.
Only a second.
But Matthew noticed.
“You knew.””
Ethan looked away.
“Matthew—”
“You knew.””
The room became colder.
Ethan sighed.
“She wasn’t supposed to tell you.””
Matthew stepped closer.
“Who wasn’t?””
Ethan said nothing.
“Who wasn’t supposed to tell me?””
Ethan finally looked up.
“Everyone.””
Matthew’s jaw tightened.
“Everyone?””
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
Ethan stood.
“This company was built by our father.””
Matthew laughed quietly.
“Here we go.””
“No, listen.””
Ethan’s voice became sharper.
“He spent his entire life protecting the Carter name.””
“And?””
“And Lucy was a risk.””
Matthew stared at him.
“A child is a risk?””
“When the wrong person uses her against you, yes.””
Matthew’s expression hardened.
“She is not a business liability.””
Ethan shook his head.
“You always did this.””
“Did what?””
“Pretended you could separate your heart from your responsibilities.””
Matthew stepped forward.
“You stole my daughter from me.””
Ethan’s face changed.
“We protected you.””
“No.””
Matthew pointed at him.
“You protected the company.””
Silence.
Because Ethan didn’t deny it.
Matthew saw the truth.
“You thought if I knew about Lucy, I would change.””
Ethan said nothing.
“You thought I would stop being the man Father wanted me to be.””
Ethan’s eyes hardened.
“And what if you did?””
Matthew froze.
Ethan continued.
“You would give everything away.””
“There it is.””
“What?””
“The truth.””
Matthew looked disgusted.
“You never cared about Lucy.””
Ethan looked toward the window.
“I cared about the family.””
Matthew shook his head.
“No. You cared about control.””
Ethan’s expression finally broke.
“You have no idea what Father left behind.””
Matthew stopped.
“What does that mean?””
Ethan hesitated.
Then slowly opened a drawer.
Inside was an old photograph.
He placed it on the table.
Matthew picked it up.
It showed his father standing outside a hospital.
Holding a newborn baby.
His father.
Holding Lucy.
Matthew’s breath caught.
“When was this taken?””
Ethan didn’t answer.
Matthew looked closer.
The date.
Six years ago.
The day Lucy was born.
His father had known.
He had known from the beginning.
And there was something written on the back of the photograph.
A message.
Matthew turned it over.
His father’s handwriting stared back at him.
Matthew,
If you are reading this, it means I failed to protect the family from the truth.
Matthew’s fingers trembled.
He kept reading.
And the final sentence made his entire world collapse.
“Your daughter is not the only secret Angela Brooks has been hiding.””
Matthew looked up.
Ethan was watching him.
“What else is there?””
Ethan didn’t answer.
Instead, he whispered:
“Ask Angela who Lucy’s father was supposed to be.””
Matthew stared at him.
“Supposed to be?””
Ethan nodded.
Then his phone buzzed.
A message appeared.
From an unknown number.
One photo.
One sentence.
Matthew opened it.
The picture showed Angela holding a newborn Lucy.
But standing beside her was another man.
A man Matthew recognized immediately.
His own best friend.
May you like
And beneath the image were six words:
*You were never the only father.*
