Chapter 8: The Daughter They Tried to Own
Matthew had faced hostile takeovers.
He had faced angry investors.
He had faced powerful men who believed money could crush anyone standing in their way.
But nothing prepared him for fear.
Not the fear of losing a company.
Not the fear of losing his reputation.
The fear of losing Lucy.
His daughter.
The little girl who had held his hand for one dance and somehow changed everything he thought he knew about himself.
Matthew stared at the phone screen.
The call was over.
But Ethan’s voice remained.
*Everyone who loves you eventually has to choose between you and the Carter name.*
Thomas stepped closer.
“Matthew.””
He turned sharply.
“Where would he take her?””
Thomas hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
“You know.””
“I have an idea.””
“Then tell me.””
Thomas looked toward Victoria.
Then back at Matthew.
“Your father had a private property outside the city.””
Matthew frowned.
“Why?””
“It was built as a safe location.””
“For what?””
Thomas answered quietly.
“For when the Carter family became the threat.””
The words were almost impossible to believe.
Matthew grabbed his jacket.
“Take me there.””
Thomas shook his head.
“No.””
Matthew stopped.
“What did you say?””
“You can’t go there without understanding what Ethan wants.””
“My daughter is there.””
“I know.””
Thomas’s voice became firm.
“And if you walk in angry, you’ll give him exactly what he wants.””
Matthew stepped closer.
“You don’t get to lecture me about my daughter.””
Thomas accepted the anger.
“You’re right.””
A pause.
“I failed you once.””
Matthew froze slightly.
Thomas continued.
“I promised your father I would protect you.””
He looked down.
“But protecting you became an excuse to control you.””
For the first time, Matthew saw regret on his face.
Real regret.
Not guilt.
Not fear.
Something deeper.
“I should have told you.””
Matthew looked away.
“But you didn’t.””
“No.””
“Why?””
Thomas answered honestly.
“Because your father was right about one thing.””
Matthew looked back.
“What?””
“Once the truth came out, the Carter family would destroy itself.””
Matthew’s expression hardened.
“Maybe it needed to.””
The private estate sat two hours outside the city.
Hidden behind tall trees and private roads, it looked less like a home and more like a fortress.
Matthew remembered visiting it once as a teenager.
His father had brought him there.
He called it a place where the Carter family could “escape the noise.””
Now Matthew understood.
It wasn’t an escape.
It was a hiding place.
The car stopped outside the gates.
Thomas looked at him.
“Before we go in, you need to know something.””
Matthew opened the door.
“What?””
“Ethan won’t hurt Lucy.””
The answer surprised him.
“How do you know?””
“Because Ethan doesn’t hate you.””
Matthew laughed coldly.
“He kidnapped my daughter.””
“Yes.””
Thomas looked serious.
“But he believes he’s saving the Carter family.””
Matthew shook his head.
“People always say that before they destroy everything.””
Thomas didn’t argue.
Because he knew.
The front door opened before they reached it.
Ethan stood inside.
Calm.
Waiting.
Lucy was sitting on the couch behind him.
The second Matthew saw her, every thought disappeared.
“Lucy.””
Her face immediately brightened.
“Matthew!””
She stood.
But Ethan held up a hand.
Not threatening.
Just stopping her.
Matthew’s entire body tensed.
“Move away from her.””
Ethan looked tired.
Not victorious.
Not angry.
Just tired.
“You still think this is about taking her from you.””
Matthew stepped forward.
“It is.””
“No.””
Ethan looked at Lucy.
“It’s about making sure she survives what happens next.””
Matthew stared.
“What are you talking about?””
Ethan reached for a folder on the table.
“You finally found the files.””
Matthew said nothing.
“You found out about Victoria.””
Silence.
“You found out about Thomas.””
Another pause.
“You found out about your father.””
Ethan looked at him.
“But you haven’t found the last secret.””
Matthew looked at Lucy.
“Let her go.””
Ethan shook his head.
“Not until you understand.””
“I don’t care.””
Matthew’s voice became dangerous.
“She is not a secret. She is not a company problem. She is not a Carter asset.””
Lucy looked confused.
Ethan’s expression softened.
“That’s exactly what I wanted to hear.””
Matthew froze.
“What?””
Ethan slowly stepped away from Lucy.
“I needed to know if you saw her as your daughter.””
Matthew stared.
“And?””
Ethan looked at him.
“You do.””
The room became quiet.
Then Ethan turned toward Lucy.
“Lucy, can you go to the other room for a minute?””
She looked at Matthew.
He nodded.
“It’s okay.””
Lucy walked away slowly.
The moment she disappeared down the hallway, Matthew turned.
“What is this?””
Ethan sat down.
“A test.””
Matthew almost couldn’t believe it.
“You kidnapped my daughter to test me?””
“No.””
Ethan looked down.
“I brought her here because someone else was coming.””
Matthew frowned.
“What?””
Ethan’s phone buzzed.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed.
“Too late.””
The lights suddenly went out.
Everything happened quickly.
Too quickly.
The security system failed.
The estate went dark.
Matthew moved immediately.
“Lucy!””
A small voice answered.
“I’m here!””
He found her in the hallway.
He pulled her close.
“It’s okay.””
She held onto him.
“Are we in trouble?””
Matthew looked around.
“No.””
But he knew that wasn’t true.
Footsteps echoed through the house.
Multiple people.
Not Ethan’s security.
Someone else.
Ethan moved beside him.
For the first time, Matthew and his brother stood on the same side.
“Who is this?””
Matthew asked.
Ethan’s face was serious.
“The person who started all of this.””
A figure appeared at the end of the hallway.
A woman.
Older.
Elegant.
Calm.
Matthew’s heart stopped.
Because he knew that face.
He had seen it in photographs.
He had heard stories.
But it was impossible.
The woman looked at him.
And smiled sadly.
“Matthew.””
His grip tightened around Lucy.
The woman took another step.
“I’m sorry it took this long.””
Matthew couldn’t speak.
Because the woman standing in front of him was the one person who should never have been there.
His mother.
The world seemed to stop.
No sound.
No movement.
Only disbelief.
Matthew stared.
His mother.
The woman he had buried twenty years ago.
The woman whose memory had shaped his entire life.
She looked older.
Different.
But it was her.
Impossible.
“You’re dead.””
The words escaped him.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I know.””
Matthew stepped backward.
“No.””
She reached out.
“Matthew.””
“No.””
His voice broke.
“You don’t get to say my name.””
Lucy looked up at him.
Confused.
Scared.
Matthew pulled her closer.
Ethan whispered:
“Now you understand.””
Matthew looked at him.
“You knew?””
Ethan looked down.
“I knew she was alive.””
The betrayal was overwhelming.
“You all knew.””
His mother stepped closer.
“I wanted to tell you.””
Matthew laughed.
A painful laugh.
“When?””
“After everything was safe.””
“Safe?””
He looked around.
“At what point was lying to me safe?””
Her expression broke.
“I was trying to protect you.””
Matthew closed his eyes.
The same words.
Again.
Everyone used the same words.
Protect.
Save.
Family.
He looked at her.
“Why?””
His mother lowered her head.
“Because your grandfather destroyed anyone who threatened the Carter empire.””
Matthew waited.
“And when I found out what he had done, I tried to expose him.””
The room went quiet.
“He found out.””
Matthew whispered:
“And?””
“He tried to take everything from me.””
She looked at Lucy.
“Including you.””
Matthew froze.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
Her voice shook.
“He planned to remove you from the company. From the family. From everything.””
Ethan stepped forward.
“Your father helped stop him.””
Matthew looked at him.
“My father?””
His mother nodded.
“He hid the truth because he believed the only way to protect you was to make everyone think I was gone.””
Matthew stared.
“But Lucy?””
Her eyes filled.
“That was different.””
“Why?””
She looked at him.
“Because when I discovered Lucy existed…”
A pause.
“I realized the same people who wanted to destroy me would use her to destroy you.””
Matthew looked down at Lucy.
His daughter.
His whole world.
His mother whispered:
“I changed the records.””
The confession hit harder than anything.
“You?””
She nodded.
“I made it appear like Jonathan was involved.””
Matthew stared.
“Why?””
“Because Jonathan was the only person I trusted.””
She looked toward the hallway where Lucy had disappeared.
“I needed someone who would protect her without wanting power.””
Matthew’s voice was quiet.
“Then why didn’t you come back?””
His mother looked at him.
And for the first time, he saw something he had never expected.
Fear.
“Because I wasn’t the only one who survived.””
A pause.
“There was someone else.””
Matthew felt cold.
“Who?””
His mother looked toward the dark windows.
Then whispered:
“The person who has controlled Carter Holdings from the beginning.””
The lights suddenly came back on.
Everyone turned.
A message appeared on the security screen.
One sentence.
One name.
Matthew stared.
Because the person behind everything was not a stranger.
Not a rival.
Not an enemy.
May you like
It was someone whose name was written on the foundation of the Carter empire.
*Your grandfather is alive.*
