Chapter 7: The Guardian Who Became the Enemy

Matthew couldn’t move.

For a moment, his mind refused to accept what his eyes were seeing.

The man standing in front of him was supposed to be dead.

Everyone knew that.

Everyone believed that.

His father’s closest friend.

The man who had disappeared six years ago after a mysterious accident.

The man whose name had been removed from Carter Holdings records.

The man who had somehow been connected to every secret surrounding Lucy.

“Thomas Hale.””

Matthew finally said the name.

The man smiled faintly.

“I was wondering how long it would take you.””

Daniel looked between them.

“Matthew…”

His voice was weak.

“You know him?””

Matthew didn’t take his eyes off Thomas.

“Everyone in my family knew him.””

Thomas stepped forward.

“Your father trusted me more than anyone.””

Matthew’s expression hardened.

“And now I know why.””

Thomas looked almost disappointed.

“You think I’m the villain.””

“A man who changes a child’s identity and hides her from her father?””

Matthew took a step closer.

“You tell me what I’m supposed to think.””

Thomas didn’t react.

“That is exactly why your father worried about you.””

Matthew’s eyes narrowed.

“Careful.””

“You always see things in black and white.””

Thomas looked around the warehouse.

“You see a missing daughter. A stolen life. A betrayal.””

He paused.

“But your father saw a war.””

Matthew laughed quietly.

“A war?””

“Yes.””

“A war where a six-year-old girl was the battlefield?””

Thomas looked at him.

“No.””

His voice became serious.

“A war where Lucy was the key.””

The answer made Matthew uncomfortable.

Not because it sounded believable.

Because too many people had protected the same secret.

Victoria stood silently nearby.

Matthew noticed.

“You knew he was alive.””

She didn’t answer.

That was enough.

His anger shifted.

“You knew.””

Victoria looked at him.

“Yes.””

“For six years?””

“Yes.””

“And you let me believe he was dead?””

Her eyes filled with regret.

“Matthew—”

“No.””

His voice cut through the room.

“Don’t explain.””

He looked around at everyone.

“My entire life, everyone has decided what I could handle.””

His eyes landed on Thomas.

“My father.””

Then Victoria.

“My aunt.””

Then Daniel.

“My investigator.””

Then himself.

“My own company.””

Matthew shook his head.

“And somehow every single person thought they had the right to choose for me.””

Nobody spoke.

Because he was right.

Thomas looked down.

“Your anger is justified.””

Matthew stared.

“But you still don’t know the truth.””

“I know enough.””

“No.””

Thomas opened the folder again.

“You know the pieces people wanted you to find.””

He pulled out another document.

“This is the full report from six years ago.””

Matthew didn’t move.

Thomas continued.

“Your father discovered that someone was trying to gain control of Carter Holdings.””

“Victoria.””

Thomas glanced at her.

“She was involved.””

Victoria lowered her eyes.

“But she wasn’t the person leading it.””

Matthew looked confused.

“Then who?””

Thomas looked at him.

“The person who wanted Lucy hidden wasn’t trying to hurt you.””

“Then what were they trying to do?””

Thomas answered quietly.

“Save you.””

Matthew almost laughed.

“Everyone keeps using that word.””

Thomas didn’t blink.

“Because it’s true.””

Thomas placed a second photograph on the table.

Matthew picked it up.

It showed his father.

Thomas.

Victoria.

And a fourth person.

A man Matthew recognized immediately.

His stomach tightened.

“Ethan.””

Thomas nodded.

“Your brother knew.””

Matthew stared.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“He was protecting the company.””

“He thought he was.””

Matthew looked up.

“What does that mean?””

Thomas sat down slowly.

“Your father discovered Ethan was being manipulated.””

“By who?””

Thomas didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he looked toward Victoria.

“Tell him.””

Victoria closed her eyes.

“I can’t.””

Matthew’s voice became colder.

“Why?””

“Because if I say it, there’s no going back.””

Matthew stepped forward.

“There hasn’t been going back since I found out my daughter existed.””

Victoria looked at him.

Then whispered:

“Your mother.””

The room froze.

Matthew felt the air leave his lungs.

“My mother?””

“She was involved.””

“No.””

The answer came instantly.

Not because he knew the truth.

Because it was impossible.

His mother had died when he was a child.

She had been the person he remembered as warmth.

Kindness.

Home.

Thomas spoke gently.

“Your mother discovered something before she died.””

Matthew looked at him.

“What?””

“That your grandfather built Carter Holdings using illegal agreements.””

Matthew stared.

The words sounded unreal.

“My grandfather?””

“Yes.””

“And my mother knew?””

“She wanted to expose it.””

Matthew shook his head.

“No.””

Thomas watched him carefully.

“Your mother was the reason your father changed.””

Matthew said nothing.

“He spent years trying to protect the family name because he thought losing the company meant losing everything.””

Thomas paused.

“But your mother believed the opposite.””

“What?””

“That a family built on lies was already broken.””

The warehouse became silent.

Matthew felt like his entire history was being rewritten.

Every person he trusted.

Every memory.

Every belief.

Nothing felt stable anymore.

Then Daniel spoke.

“Matthew.””

He looked over.

Daniel nodded toward the folder.

“There’s something else.””

Thomas looked away.

Daniel continued.

“I found the original investigation file.””

Matthew walked over.

Inside was a final report.

The title:

*Project Lucy.*

His hands tightened.

“Project?””

Daniel nodded.

“Your father gave the situation a code name.””

Matthew read.

The report described threats.

Corporate sabotage.

Financial crimes.

But one section caught his attention.

*Reason for concealment of child identity: protection from internal hostile party.*

Matthew looked up.

“Who was the hostile party?””

Thomas answered.

“The person who wanted Lucy.””

“Who?””

Thomas was silent.

Then:

“Someone close enough to reach her.””

Matthew stared.

“Give me a name.””

Thomas looked at Victoria.

Then Ethan’s name appeared in the file.

But next to it was another name.

A name Matthew never expected.

His hand stopped.

“No.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Matthew?””

He slowly turned the paper around.

At the bottom was a signature.

The person who authorized the entire operation.

The person who ordered Lucy’s identity changed.

The person who had access to every Carter family secret.

Matthew whispered:

“This isn’t possible.””

Thomas watched him.

“It is.””

Matthew looked up.

“Why?””

Thomas answered:

“Because the person who erased you from Lucy’s life…”

A pause.

“Was the person who loved you most.””

Matthew stared at the signature.

His mother’s name.

Not a copy.

Not a fake.

Her actual signature.

But that was impossible.

She had been dead for years.

His voice shook.

“She couldn’t have done this.””

Thomas said nothing.

Matthew looked at him.

“Tell me she didn’t.””

Thomas remained silent.

And that silence was worse than any answer.

Then Matthew’s phone rang.

Angela.

He answered immediately.

Her voice was panicked.

“Matthew.””

“What happened?””

A pause.

Then:

“Lucy is gone.””

Everything stopped.

Matthew stood instantly.

“What?””

“I left her with my neighbor for ten minutes.””

Her breathing became faster.

“She disappeared.””

Matthew’s heart dropped.

“Did you see who took her?””

Angela was crying now.

“No.””

Then another sound came through the phone.

A child’s voice.

Faint.

Distant.

“Matthew…”

He froze.

“Lucy?””

The line crackled.

Then a man spoke.

Calm.

Controlled.

Familiar.

“Now you understand.””

Matthew’s blood ran cold.

The voice belonged to Ethan.

“You spent your whole life searching for the truth.””

A pause.

“But you forgot the most important thing.””

Matthew’s grip tightened around the phone.

“What?””

Ethan answered:

“Everyone who loves you eventually has to choose between you and the Carter name.””

The call ended.

Matthew stared at the dead screen.

Then he looked at Thomas.

“Where is my daughter?””

For the first time, Thomas looked afraid.

“Matthew…”

“Where is she?””

Thomas swallowed.

And whispered:

“If Ethan has Lucy…”

A pause.

“He’s not trying to hide her.””

Matthew felt a chill.

“What is he trying to do?””

May you like

Thomas looked toward the door.

“He’s trying to prove that your family was never yours to begin with.””
