Chapter 6: The Woman Behind the Name

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Not because there was nothing to say.

Because nobody knew what to say.

I held the phone against my ear even though the call had already ended.

The screen was dark.

The name was still there.

*Maya.*

But Maya was standing in front of me.

The same Maya who had worked beside me for ten years.

The same Maya who knew how I drank my coffee.

The same Maya who sat beside me the night my company nearly collapsed.

The same Maya who knew every secret I had ever shared.

And now there was another Maya.

A voice.

A warning.

A person I couldn’t see.

“Claire,” Gabriel said carefully.

I looked up.

“Don’t.””

He stopped.

“Don’t tell me who to trust.””

His expression changed.

Not anger.

Understanding.

Because he knew exactly why I was saying it.

Everyone had become a stranger.

My mother.

My father.

Gabriel.

Maya.

All of them had hidden pieces of my life from me.

Richard watched me quietly.

Then he spoke.

“You finally understand.””

I turned toward him.

“Understand what?””

“That the people around you have been controlling your reality since you were born.””

My eyes narrowed.

“You’re not helping.””

“I’m not trying to help.””

His honesty surprised me.

“I’m trying to make sure you see clearly.””

I almost laughed.

“After everything that happened today, you expect me to trust you?””

“No.””

Richard stepped closer.

“I expect you to trust nobody.””

The answer was unsettling.

Because it sounded reasonable.

And that scared me.

My mother looked at Richard with hatred.

“Don’t listen to him.””

I turned toward her.

“Why?””

She froze.

“Because he’s lying.””

“Are you sure?””

The question hurt her.

I saw it.

A mother’s pain.

But also guilt.

“You don’t believe me.””

“I don’t know what to believe.””

The honesty broke something between us.

For fifteen years, I had mourned a dead woman.

Then she appeared alive.

Then I discovered she might not even be the woman I thought she was.

My entire childhood had become a question mark.

Maya—the woman standing near the school entrance—finally spoke.

“Claire.””

I looked at her.

Her eyes were wet.

“I can explain.””

“No.””

She swallowed.

“Please.””

I shook my head.

“Not until you answer one thing.””

“What?””

“Who called me?””

Her face went pale.

The smallest reaction.

But enough.

“You know.””

The words came out quietly.

Maya looked away.

Richard smiled.

Interesting.

Everyone noticed.

“What is happening?”” I asked.

Nobody answered.

I walked toward Maya.

“Who was that?””

She whispered.

“Someone who uses my name.””

My heartbeat increased.

“What does that mean?””

Maya looked around.

Then lowered her voice.

“There are people who have spent years trying to find you.””

“Why?””

“Because you inherited something.””

I frowned.

“My company?””

“No.””

She looked at Gabriel.

“Something much bigger.””

Gabriel’s face hardened.

“Maya.””

She ignored him.

“Claire, your father left something behind.””

Richard stepped forward.

“The research.””

Maya looked at him.

“You don’t know everything.””

Richard smiled.

“I know enough.””

I felt trapped between two different versions of the truth.

“Someone explain.””

Maya took a breath.

“Your father didn’t just build businesses.””

She glanced at Gabriel.

“He built a network.””

“What kind of network?””

“A private research organization.””

Gabriel interrupted.

“One that was supposed to help people.””

Maya looked at him.

“Until it became something else.””

The old anger returned to her voice.

“Your father and Gabriel created technology that could have transformed medicine.””

Richard nodded.

“And then people fought over it.””

I looked at the three of them.

“So why am I involved?””

Nobody answered immediately.

That terrified me.

Finally, Gabriel spoke.

“Because your father left the final access key with you.””

I stared.

“What access key?””

“The reason everyone is searching for you.””

I shook my head.

“That’s impossible.””

“No,” Gabriel said.

“It isn’t.””

My mother stepped forward.

“Claire, when you were young, your father gave you something.””

I searched my memory.

A toy.

A book.

A necklace.

The necklace.

I touched it instinctively.

“This?””

Gabriel nodded.

My fingers tightened around it.

“This is a key?””

“Not exactly.””

He looked at the pendant.

“It contains information.””

I stared.

A tiny necklace I had worn since childhood.

The thing I thought was just a memory.

A symbol of my parents.

Was actually something else.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””

My mother looked devastated.

“Because we wanted you to have a normal life.””

I turned toward her.

“Normal?””

My voice cracked.

“You let me believe my entire family was dead.””

She lowered her eyes.

“I was wrong.””

It was the first time she admitted it.

No excuse.

No explanation.

Just regret.

A sudden sound interrupted us.

A phone vibrating.

Everyone looked at Richard.

He reached into his pocket.

His expression changed when he saw the screen.

He answered immediately.

“Yes?””

A pause.

Then his face became serious.

“What do you mean she escaped?””

My stomach tightened.

He turned away from us.

That was enough.

I looked at Maya.

“Who escaped?””

Maya whispered.

“Me.””

The blood drained from my face.

“What?””

She looked terrified.

“The woman who called you…”

She swallowed.

“She’s my sister.””

Nobody moved.

“My twin sister.””

The words felt impossible.

I looked at the woman standing in front of me.

Maya.

Then remembered the voice.

The same voice.

The same name.

A hidden twin.

Another secret.

Of course.

Because apparently my life could not contain only one impossible truth.

“Where is she?””

Maya’s eyes filled.

“I don’t know.””

Richard ended the call and turned back.

His expression had changed.

“What happened?”” my mother asked.

Richard looked directly at Maya.

Then at me.

“She got away.””

Gabriel’s face darkened.

“Who?””

Richard answered slowly.

“The person who has been manipulating all of this from the beginning.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Who?””

Nobody spoke.

Richard looked at Gabriel.

Then at my mother.

Then at me.

“Someone who knew every secret before any of you did.””

I waited.

“Someone who has been watching Claire her entire life.””

My voice barely came out.

“Who?””

Richard took a breath.

And said a name.

A name that made Gabriel step back.

A name that made my mother cover her mouth.

A name that made Maya whisper:

“No…”

“Dr. Vanessa Monroe.””

I frowned.

The name meant nothing.

Until Gabriel spoke.

His voice was broken.

“She was my wife.””

The world went silent.

“Your wife?””

Gabriel nodded.

“The woman who disappeared twenty years ago.””

Richard looked toward the road.

“And the woman who was supposed to be dead.””

My hands went cold.

Another dead person.

Another impossible return.

Another piece of my life I never knew existed.

Then Gabriel said something that changed everything.

“Vanessa wasn’t looking for the necklace.””

He looked at me.

“She was looking for you.””

A car engine suddenly roared nearby.

Everyone turned.

A black sedan sped toward the curb.

The window lowered.

A woman’s face appeared.

Older.

Familiar.

Terrifyingly calm.

She looked directly at me.

“Claire.””

Nobody breathed.

Gabriel whispered:

“No…”

The woman smiled.

“You finally found me.””

May you like

And then she said the words that made my entire body freeze.

“Because I’m the only person who can tell you who you really are.””
